This may be a silly question, but what do you dress babies in when it gets warmer?

Currently DS (14 weeks) wears a babygro and vest or vest, top, trousers and socks. I add a cardigan and hat when out.

Is a vest and trousers/shorts okay for summer? What about socks? Or just a T-shirt and trousers?

Not sure what to do, so far it's all been about keeping him warm!

Think about what you are wearing and then have a light extra layer like a cardigan to hand. If you have cold feet then so will ds!

BellaBear · 25/04/2008 08:44

I never have cold feet
the sandals are coming out today!

less

If it's so hot they only need one layer I favour rompers for tinies (ie babygrows with short arms and legs) over short/shirt combos else they ride up and you get bare tum

BellaBear · 25/04/2008 08:45

ooo rompers

good idea

do they need a popper vest under?

However if it's really hot, like the heatwave 2 years ago, don't be afraid just to have him in a nappy and lots of sun block. My first post natal class was during this heatwave and the first thing the HV told us was that we had all dressed our babies too warmly!

i think i've been dressing him too cold all winter compared to other babies. but he hasn't seemed unhappy.

if he's ok I wouldn;t worry - my mother was horrified when she found out I put dd to bed in a sleepsuit and no vest, but she gets sweaty in anything more.

(Wait till you get to Advanced Baby Clothes - do dungarees count as a 'layer' or not? what about tights if they're pulled right up? or a pinafore? You work it out eventually )

BellaBear · 25/04/2008 09:06

Sounds like a diploma. Like Changing a Nappy Using Only One Wipe

LOL Mrs Badger... My MIL was horrified when she found out I only put DS in a babygro (and an extremely warm wrap I might add) to bed that the next time I saw her, she presented me with 6 vests all washed and ironed... He's still alive!

TheMadHouse · 25/04/2008 09:26

I loved it when mine were little and you could pop on a romper or a vest and shorty dungarees.

Dungarees are a no no now that DS1 is toilet trained, as he can not undo them

choufleur · 25/04/2008 13:50

depends how hot it is - summer that ds was born for about 2 months he mostly just wore a nappy unless we were going out (although i'd often lie him on a towel with nothing on). going out just a vest or short suit thing.

bogie · 25/04/2008 13:55

Ds had loads of these in the summer www.houseoffraser.co.uk/on/demandware.store/Sites-hof-Site/default/Link-Product?pid=108582015&cgid=4 01

MrsBadger · 25/04/2008 13:58

what, £24 RL ones?

TheMadHouse · 25/04/2008 14:15

Different planet from TheMadHouse

Mine were 3 for £5 from tesco

bogie · 25/04/2008 14:42

Yes but they were not £24 we have lots of family in america and there about £5 over there sowe got alot there and bought them over

Imawurzel · 25/04/2008 14:54

i've been wondering this too. i ormally dress my DD in a vest with poppers whatever you call them, trousers and light long sleeved top, sometimes a coat if it's breezy, and then her cozytoes. i think it's too much but never am sure!
the other day i just had her blanket on pushchair,no cozy-toes and didn't think it was enough.

Beelliesebub · 25/04/2008 15:00

When my ds's were babies (a long, long time ago) and it was hot I'd dress them in just an all in one romper's made of towling and take a cardi out with me, just in case.....
However when they got older 3+ they seemed to spend their summers in shorts and wellies.... Their choice, not mine!

poodlepusher · 25/04/2008 16:21

Vest and shorts or just all in one type vest over a nappy.

And a sunhat.

and factor 50 sunscreen

AND a sunshade on the buggy.

bozza · 25/04/2008 16:26

I think when it gets properly one body suit and dungarees or rompers are good options. I wouldn't worry about underdressing your baby - far more babies are overdressed than underdressed. DD was a May baby and I remember that nearly every time she was grouchy and we couldn't get to the bottom of it, it would be because she was too hot and I would have to strip her off and lay her on a towel while I sponged her down.

Mind you, I remember taking DS when he was a few days old to my grandparents (our first outing) and just house to car and car to house and my Grandma looking at his hat (it was Feb) and saying "it's just a bit of cotton, turn the fire up Frank".
