This may be a silly question, but what do you dress babies in when it gets warmer?

Currently DS (14 weeks) wears a babygro and vest or vest, top, trousers and socks. I add a cardigan and hat when out.

Is a vest and trousers/shorts okay for summer? What about socks? Or just a T-shirt and trousers?

Not sure what to do, so far it's all been about keeping him warm!

Short sleeved/short legged rompers are fab in the summer

Do you make them wear anything under those summer rompers? I got a whole bunch as gifts for summer but they look kinda big (and therefore airy)? Thanks!

MrsBadger · 25/04/2008 20:57

depends how hot it is!

they are good for sleeping in when it;s really hot

I agree rompers are fab, DD1 spent much of her first few weeks in a vest or romper. Hood of pram and sunshade over it just incase, most of the time we would just be out for 30 mins at a time as it was too hot for her.

I bought one of those nursery thermometer things that tell you the temperature and how many layers to put on and it was off the scale.

Hi sweetkitty,

Do you actually live in the UK??? I don't remember it ever getting that hot in my 8 years here. LOL! Just kidding. I wish it was that hot now... :P

Mild days (like it's getting now), I had/have him in a vest, long-sleeved top and trousers, plus his coat for outside (or a lighter jacket if it's really mild). Long-sleeved and legged rompers I liked too. Plus I love dungarees as they (with poppered long-sleeved vest underneath) don't ride up and give the baby lots of movement.

Warm days I agree that cropped rompers with a vest on are good, or shorts over a short-sleeved bodysuit and a cardigan handy, or cropped dungarees.

When it's very hot, DS just wore a short-sleeved bodysuit on its own. Mothercare etc also do some rompers which are sleeveless.

DS was born 2 months early and I'd bought lots of 0-3 months clothes for him (acting upon advice that he would grow out of newborn soon). As it was, he was 4 months before he started fitting those clothes - by then weather was hot, but these clothes were wooly dungarees and thick sleepsuits so most of them were worn for about 2 weeks when it suddenly became cooler for a while.

One last thing I will say is check the summer rompers etc carefully to make sure there are no applique/embroidered designs with rough areas inside the outfit etc as your baby might be wearing them with nothing underneath in very hot weather and then they can be uncomfortable.

Oh and be prepared for the pleasant surprise that summer clothes need less materials and therefore seem to be about 1/3 - 1/2 the price of winter stuff . Iam looking forward to summer soo much!

Airy can be good if it is warm. I do think a lot of it depends on the natural temperature of your children. For some reason mine don't seem to feel the cold (unlike their parents) and we always had the problem of them being too hot. Even now that they are 7 and 3 DS never wears a vest (I have just stopped buying them for him) and DD only rarely - usually on the occasions when she decides that a thin cotton dress is a good idea despite the fact it is sleeting outside. And both are in their short pjs already.

Angel - DD1 was born in central London in July 2004 so it was pretty warm. That little theromometer thing never worked it was always saying it was too hot lol.

DD3 will be born in July in Scotland so will be cardigans and wellie boots.

If its V hot the plus one layer may be too much. boy at 4 months spent a fair ammont of A hot august in nowt but a nappy or nappy + shorty baby grow. He was over heating and unhappy in anything more.
I suspect we tend to over dress kids in the UK.

BellaBear · 27/04/2008 09:02

yes, that's what i was thinking. ds at the mo is in vest and trousers and seems happy. thin cotton trousers at that.
