What's the least effort costume you can think of?

My 3 yo has been invited to an un-Halloween party this weekend. Costume party, but the stipulation is "nothing scary", so we pretty much have free reign when it comes to choice. I'm 36 weeks pregnant, and my consultant has explicitly said take it easy and don't do too much.

Any ideas for costumes? I can't really go hunting around charity shops at the moment and I really don't want to buy something new for him to wear once.

Mother suggested getting a cardboard box and cutting head and armholes in it. That might just be the answer unless the MN-hive can come up with something! 😂

Old bedsheet and eye holes. Say he's Casper. Casper isn't scary.

MiraculousLadybug · 22/10/2024 14:11

Last year I forgot it was some sort of fancy dress non uniform (world book day I think) until it was almost time to leave for school, so I cut out a square of green fabric and knotted it together at the front like a cape with a plain red t-shirt and called it the Hungry Caterpillar. DS (4) was over the moon. 😅

A cat.
Trackies and a t-shirt (black/white/brown/orange if possible).
White socks on hands as paws, sock stuffed as tail pinned to his bottom. Whiskers drawn on face (if you can get to a Poundland there will be facepaint in the Halloween stuff). Cardboard ears attached to a cheap headband (again fromPoundland if you don't have one).

“Scary” just means don’t come as some weird clown, in a horrible mask, etc

You could dress him as a warlock (make a cloak out is and a cardboard wand) or a black cat or a bat or whatever.

TheSpottedZebra · 22/10/2024 14:13

Cushions tied round tummy and covered in foil =jacket potato

Enoughwiththisshit · 22/10/2024 14:14

Go with the cardboard box and let him decorate it with stickers and streamers. He can be a firework!

JumpstartMondays · 22/10/2024 14:15

Black cat.
Dressed all in black.
Eyeliner/face paint black nose and whiskers.
Got an alice hair band? Make some card/thick paper cat ears to stick to it.
Got some old black tights you could stuff for a tail?

MiraculousLadybug · 22/10/2024 14:15

Shirt + bowtie (or something that can make a bow) = doctor who
A cat ears headband + black top + black trousers = a cat (Cat Noir if it needs to be a superhero).
A red t-shirt with a shiny badge or a hat = firefighter
A blue t-shirt with a shiny badge or a hat = police
Wellies + a blue coat = Paddington Bear
Stethoscope from doctor's kit plus white jacket or top = doctor
Stethoscope from doctor's kit plus green jacket/top plus a cuddly toy = vet or zookeeper.

I know they're all a bit crap by Instagram standards but little kids really don't care.

TheSpottedZebra · 22/10/2024 14:15

Ask around and see what people have already -headband with ears? (Or 'make' your own) and eyeliner nose and whiskers does for a cat.

If a friend has a superman outfit, just be superman.

The least effort one I did was giving dd a bucket, filling it full of dinosaurs and saying she was Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs.

TheSpottedZebra · 22/10/2024 14:17

Cardboard box he could be a robot?

Procrastinates · 22/10/2024 14:17

Presuming she doesn't already have any fancy dress clothes then I'd ask any friends you have with young children. Most will happily lend you a costume. Failing that just dress him in black and draw whiskers on his face for an instant cat.

Needmorelego · 22/10/2024 14:17

Actually......if a cat I think Poundland has some headbands with ears on.

Potentiallyplausible · 22/10/2024 14:17

Ladybird? Black leggings or tights, red-shirt covered with black spots.

Snorlaxo · 22/10/2024 14:17

I’d go down the American route of dressing up in normal dressing up clothes.

JumpstartMondays · 22/10/2024 14:19

Blue t-shirt, a bandage and some plasters. Mr Bump!

SomeonTookMyAnonymousUserName · 22/10/2024 14:25

This was the easiest one that I've done.

The boy from Diary of a Wimpy Kid (can't remember his name).

It can be any character who wears normal
Clothes and just draw a mask for your son to hide behind

CMOTDibbler · 22/10/2024 15:07

I once sent my ds as Harry and the bucket full of dinosaurs as it only required a bucket.

This is genius!!

That's my costume sorted 😂

Catcatkitten · 22/10/2024 15:13

Farmer! Checked shirt and jeans/dungarees and a straw summer hat if you have one. Plus cuddly toy.

Needmorelego · 22/10/2024 15:15

@TheSpottedZebra I'm going to Comic Con and could do that costume - only I wouldn't need the pillow 😂
(I have threatened to go as The Fat Controller from Thomas the Tank. I'm kinda the right shape.....).

CoffeeBeansGalore · 22/10/2024 15:16

Shaggy & Scooby - Green t shirt, brown or grey trousers & a cheap plush scooby doo from ebay.

KnickerlessFlannel · 22/10/2024 15:18

Dressed in clothes all of one colour and he can be a fruit/veg eg tomato for all red clothes, purple is a plumq

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/10/2024 15:28

Dark shirt with white cardboard 'dog collar'.

He can go as a vicar who has been miniaturised by a malevolent ghost, that he was in the process of exorcising.

(He may need to carry a sign explaining this!)
