What's the least effort costume you can think of?

My 3 yo has been invited to an un-Halloween party this weekend. Costume party, but the stipulation is "nothing scary", so we pretty much have free reign when it comes to choice. I'm 36 weeks pregnant, and my consultant has explicitly said take it easy and don't do too much.

Any ideas for costumes? I can't really go hunting around charity shops at the moment and I really don't want to buy something new for him to wear once.

Mother suggested getting a cardboard box and cutting head and armholes in it. That might just be the answer unless the MN-hive can come up with something! 😂

Cardboard box with wrapping paper glued to the outside, head and armholes cut. Big bow in front. A present...

Cardboard box, paint in Lego primary colour, stick on painted jar lids or plastic cups cut short in same colour, cut out head and arm holes - a Lego block. Wear same colour trews and top underneath. Optional - Lego person head in yellow on top.

A mime - black leggings, striped top, face whitened, mime-looking makeup (eyes, lips, cheeks).

Stick figure - requires white sweatpants, white sweatshirt, black ribbon. Sew the ribbon on front of each leg of the sweatpants, one strip up the middle of the sweatshirt, one strip in front of each arm, whiten face and draw a black circle from chin to forehead. Ribbon sections all meet at lower abdomen and at neck. You can sew ribbon on the back in stick figure shape too.

Spider - dress DC in black, head to toe. Stuff six long black socks with whatever fabric/ other socks/ tissue paper you have to hand, attach stuffed socks to the black top to form spider legs. Use one long piece of string to tie the end of each spider leg and the wrists of the DC so the legs move up and down when the arms move. Leave plenty of string between each 'leg'. A little black beanie hat would look good with this.

Snail - get a long roll of brown paper. Crumple it a bit, then fold to about a foot wide. Roll it into a snail shell shape. Glue the end to the roll, or staple. Attach fabric straps to the shell with stapler or hot glue to go over DC's shoulders and cross in front. Dress DC in brown, and make snail antennae with a hairband, pompoms, ping pong balls, etc.

I once sent my ds as Harry and the bucket full of dinosaurs as it only required a bucket.

Bringing back memories - we did this too.

My failsafe was a pirate. Striped top, rolled up pants, a belt with a big buckle made from card and foil, home made eyepatch and a scarf bandana style around his head, waistcoat if you've got one or can cut sleeves out of something, cardboard and foil sword.

Has he any superhero outfits or pyjamas?

DeedlessIndeed · 22/10/2024 16:34

How about a classic Halloween shepherd? Dressing gown, sandals, and a tea towel on his head - bonus points for a toy sheep or lamb and a walking stick.

NorthernSoul55 · 22/10/2024 16:34

Animal or dinosaur onesie??

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 22/10/2024 16:35

Just get something from amazon, loads for around 8-10 quid. Or go to any supermarket.

Or just get a cat headband, dress them all in black, draw some whiskers on them, done.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/10/2024 16:35

Does he not have any dressing up outfits already he could wear?

I would probably just buy a non-scary Halloween outfit from Amazon/Asda/somewhere else cheap and buy it slightly large - turn up the trousers and sleeves and it will fit him next year.

Old bedsheet and eye holes. Say he's Casper. Casper isn't scary.

It’s a Un Halloween party!
Stick a straw in his top pocket and he can go as The last straw!

SayDoWhatNow · 22/10/2024 16:46

Scarecrow - small patches of fraying yellow fabric attached to clothing (glue / safety pins), similar fabric in strips attached to cuffs if feeling adventurous, and some kind of floppy hat. The more bedraggled and amateurish it looks the better

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 22/10/2024 17:53

Wednesday Adams from the 1990 movie would go in normal clothes. I'm a homicidal maniac, they look just like everybody else.

If that's a bit complicated to teach a 3 year old to say, neutral trousers or leggings, orange t shirt and green hat. If you don't mind wrecking the t shirt, draw a pumpkin face.

ladymalfoy45 · 22/10/2024 17:55

Own clothes. Invisible Man on his day off.

CosmoQ · 22/10/2024 17:57

Cat

spookyscaryseagulls · 22/10/2024 18:05

When I was younger I went as a mouse. Grey trousers/leggings, darkop with a piece of ribbon as the tail which was clearly clipped on with a safety pin (the farmers wife cut my tail off OBVIOUSLY 😂. Mum drew whiskers on me with an eye pencil.

HurdyGurdy19 · 22/10/2024 18:22

White sheet with a hole for the head. Drawn musical 🎵 with a sharpie. Go as sheet music

Phineyj · 22/10/2024 18:25

Yellow tahirt and yellow tights or leggings. Sticky label with Fyffes logo.

Banana!

leia24 · 22/10/2024 18:36

Easiest of all. A fiver for a dragon Cape and mask and dress him in green or black.

One year my mum stuck empty packets/wrappers to a bin bag and my brother went as a bag of rubbish 😂 I can still remember the hilarity. It’s the only costume of his I remember!
I always went as a homemade cat. Stuffed old pair of tights for a tail and cardboard ears on a headband.

Crispynoodle · 22/10/2024 18:39

I once cut into a stripy shirt and cut up a waistcoat made a cardboard scabbard drew a blue beard on my 5 year old and sent him as...well blue beard the pirate won first prize too!

user2848502016 · 22/10/2024 18:57

Have you got a local Facebook group? Could put a message on there to see if anyone is getting rid of or selling a fancy dress costume?

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 22/10/2024 19:28

The simplest of all has to be going as Adam or Eve. (Adults only, obvs).

If anybody does try that, let us know how it goes for you........

olympicsrock · 22/10/2024 19:31

My children liked the home made “Pantsman”

pants over trousers and pants on head. Always good for a laugh!
