yoto player

is the yoto player worth it? I have a 19month old who hates bedtime. He’s fine once asleep but it’s getting him to sleep at night which is the problem. This is strange as nap time during the day he is fine. I was thinking of getting him a yoto player I like this idea better than him looking a tablet screen also the fact it can be used as a nightlight. Is he to young? Does anyone have a yoto box is it worth the money?

100% love ours.

Songs and stories during the day and then we also use at bedtime for calming and helping sleep.

We also have the Tonies box which we love, but the Yoto has more longevity as it has loads more cards and is suitable for a much wider age range.

Not sure if I'm allowed to put a code in here but I have a 10% off referral if you would like it.

We absolutely love ours 😊 DS is almost 4 and has used his everyday for the last year. We actually went for the Yoto Mini instead as we liked the idea of it being more portable 😊 He often listens to it in the car. And the battery lasts ages on one charge.

They’re super easy to use! I’d go for it 😊

They are well made, buy my 3.5 year old still doesn't really understand the point of hers and doesn't sit there and listen to it. She prefers to just play with the cards!

Yawnandstretch · 18/10/2024 20:23

My 3 year just listens to audiobooks on either mine or DHs phone. Most audiobooks are free on Spotify premium or there are lots of children’s podcasts where they read stories.

We were considering a tonie or yoto but tried this and it works just fine. We read 3 books, then lay down together to listen to an audiobook, we choose one that is around 10mins long and is usually asleep before the end. One of us does stay with him until asleep because it’s only 30mins with books and audiobook and we enjoy the snuggles.

Yourethebeerthief · 18/10/2024 20:47

100%

Just turned 3 year old loves his. He's had it since he was 2 ½. He has lots of story cards and chooses his own to listen to. Sleep radio on through the night, and he likes the daytime radio in the day. Can't fault it.

Sorry if this is a bit of a daft question. But is there any difference between the mini one and the normal other than the size? I’m still looking into these.

@FirstTimeMum0 The mini one doesn’t have a nightlight or a room thermometer. We don’t use ours at night so weren’t fussy about these.
The mini supposedly doesn’t go as loud, although ours goes very loud so I can’t imagine how loud the normal ones are!

whoami24601 · 18/10/2024 22:09

For that age I'd go with a mini. We have a regular and a mini. The normal one is quite heavy! I love them so much. Both DS use them every night to listen to stories or music. You can record yourself reading and put those onto the cards which DH has done for when he is away with work. The customer service is really good too. YouTube on phones is fine but a yoto gives them the control to choose whatever they want. Also if you download the app then all your cards are automatically on there incase you lose any. Can't recommend them enough!

SpruceMoose · 18/10/2024 22:11

My 5 year old has had once since he was 2.5yrs and loves it. My 19 month old has had one since last Christmas and listens to it all the time (not at bedtime yet). My 5yr old has used it at bedtimes since he was about 3 but I'm sure it could be used younger if needed. Both have the big one but we recently got my 5yr old a mini for use in the car etc. I would say the original is better for younger children.

Righteouspuppy · 18/10/2024 22:12

Not worth it. Another one of those things middle class parents are sold as a must have. But you can play podcasts, music from any iPad or phone and not pay for every single one in a physical card form

NonPlayerExtra · 18/10/2024 22:18

We have 3 (9,8,3) with a Yoto each. The older kids listen to the podcasts and audiobooks, the younger one listens to music when he goes to sleep but has just started getting into audiobooks too.

We've been really happy with them. I didn't want smart speakers or iPads in their rooms so these are perfect for our kids.

I'm not sure was social class we are defined as though... lower/middle, upper/working 😂

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 18/10/2024 22:18

DS has had one for a few years now, he's nearly six, it is used daily; he reads to us, we read to him then he has 30 minutes yoto in bed with lights out. He listens to the daily podcast most days in the morning and loves the brainbots stuff. We also like the app to play books through the car on longer journeys. It's well worth the money for us, but and I've said this on other threads, we are not a TV in the background house, so for example DS is playing with Lego, building his train sets, drawing etc he often has the Yoto on. We only put TV on to watch something specific, I think if we were a family who just generally had the TV on in the background it wouldn't get used quite as much.

We don't have iPads and don't want them

Gotosleep91 · 18/10/2024 22:31

Worth it although at that age might have trouble using it without help. Like they can get the cards in and out but DD used to faff with the buttons and knobs and then get upset because she accidentally skipped a story or whatever. She only started getting a lot out of it from about 3 years I'd say.

We have the mini, it's a great size and does go really loud so I don't see the point in the big one. You can also set a limit on the volume using the settings in the app which I like.

NCfor24 · 18/10/2024 22:40

We absolutely love our Yotos...have an original and a mini. My kids are lots older at 13 & 11 and still used daily as audiobooks are part of the bedtime routine.
Why not download the Yoto app for free and listen to some of the free content, maybe Yoto nighttime radio and see whether it settles little one. Its not a huge cost to buy a Yoto but since the won't control it themselves yet why not use the app and a Bluetooth speaker in the bedroom as a trial run?

NCfor24 · 18/10/2024 22:42

To add for that age I'd go for an original Yoto for the nightlight. As they get older it's handy to use as a day/night clock...listen to stories until the sun shows then call mummy and daddy or whatever...

Righteouspuppy · 18/10/2024 22:48

cool story. You want a medal?

Righteouspuppy · 18/10/2024 22:51

It’s essential just a Bluetooth speaker with the additional cost of bespoke cards so up to you. All the content can be easily got elsewhere.

We have one original and two mini's. Much prefer the minis but if you want a nightlight then you'd need the original. The original you can set to be X colour at nighttime between certain hours, and Y colour during the day, so sort of telling them when they can get up, like a grow egg type thing.

The minis are really portable and fab in the car.

lochmaree · 18/10/2024 23:05

For pp saying you can just get the content on phone / iPad, you can obviously, but we found this to a be a pain as DC just get distracted by the screen / other stuff. With the Yoto it can be left out 24/7 and they can choose what to listen to and don't need an adult to put something on/navigate a screen.

flyinghen · 18/10/2024 23:09

I have an 18 month old and a 5 year old who's had her YOTO since she was 2. 5 year old loves it and I will 100% be getting my youngest one when she's older but 19 months is too young for them to use it themselves really. My eldest didn't really properly use it until she was maybe 3 so I think we got it a bit early. You could certainly get one and use it as a night light and bedtime story player on a high shelf for you to control and it will come into it's own when you child is older. You can control it from the app which is great.

5 year old uses it as a nightlight, bed time stories, stories during the day, music, etc. It's on loads and I 100% recommend in general.

flyinghen · 18/10/2024 23:13

Also to add we use it as an 'okay to wake' clock for 5 year old. We set the light to green at 7am so she knows it's okay to come see us/leave her room etc and red for overnight.

I don't understand this mindset. My son has the yoto mini. He's 3 and carts it around happily, choosing his own stories and music to listen to. We bring it on trips with us as he's not allowed a tablet. He's happy for hours with his yoto and some books.

It gives him his own choices and he clearly loves that.

The nighttime radio is wonderful for him too.

No, she wants a Yoto. Duh.

A lot of parents don't want screens for their children. I certainly don't. Surely a device is worth it if the child loves it, and my son adores his Yoto player.
