What is your 1 year old DD's favourite toy, ever?

I am starting to think about what to get my DD for her first birthday. We are quite 'selective' about toys, in so far as we don't have tons of them. DD has had a few, 'main' toys up until now that she has really enjoyed.

So I am looking for a toy that DD will enjoy for a good few months. Our birthday budget would probably be about £50.00.

Or did you guys go down the keep sake route for 1st b'day and get something like a set of books?

Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks!

Ds loved and still loves his push along toys, especially his little car. He's 2 in July, btw.

tarantula · 22/04/2008 09:52

dds fav toy at 1 was her wheely bug and its still played with now at 4

McDreamy · 22/04/2008 09:54

We bought a big wooden noahs ark for DD's first birthday and 5 years later it is still played with by her and her little brother. Cost £50

wheelybugs are great at this age. Probably about the right price.

DDs both got lots of use out of them at that age. Good for pushing and crawling/shuffling on knees initially and then as a walker, then later something to sit on and move about.

MoreSpamThanGlam · 22/04/2008 09:55

A big shape sorter

My dd is 1yr old in 19 days time. We have got her a few books she is really into the ones with texture and lift up flaps, a tombliboo sit and ride toy push along walker thing from argos £25 a babyborn my first doll and a something special dvd cos she loves the singing hands/justin/mr tumble oh and 2 small tombliboos should have been 3 but my dd 15 gave her one of them last week.

Umlellala · 22/04/2008 10:03

Got her a (small) doll for her 1st birthday, she LOVES it still...

She also loved a ride-along car thing from ELC from her Grandma, and a pram from Nanna. And would have adored the Wheelybug (plays with it in local shop - couldn't justify the £50 price tag, but it is tempting)

I say doll (small 'first' doll) and pram if she hasn't already got.

My dd is 1yr old in 18 days time!

Please somebody tell me that she won't notice if I don't buy her a big present? I haven't got a spare penny. I've crocheted a blanket and made her a card.

I've been putting £1 a week away since Christmas so I can buy a wheely bug for her next Christmas.

Nobody remembers their 1st birthday, right?

Not saying you shouldn't make a fuss btw, just worried that I'm a bad mummy because I can't afford it.

Umlellala · 22/04/2008 10:13

Of course not, Show of Hands. The blanket and card sounds lovely (jealous of your crocheting skills - she will be chuffed you made it for her. dd talks now about a knitted doll blanket I made her - MUMMY made it [smile)). We only got dd the doll (about £8) last year cos we thought she didn't need lots... And relatives bought lots...

DD was just two last week and enjoyed the candles and cake more than presents - and we didn't go mad this year either. She will love a day where you focus just on her and give her loads of kisses and cuddles as you remember 'this time last year...'

ShowOfHands · 22/04/2008 10:24

Thank you Umlellala. Would it be alright if I don't remember this time last year though? I'd rather blanked that bit out. In fact I may start celebrating the day after her birthday which is a much nicer memory. Lots of tea, cake and sitting.

Crocheting a blanket's easy if you can knit btw! Easier in fact.

constancereader · 22/04/2008 10:27

Show of Hands (I'm going to see them in Cardiff soon!) my ds's favourite toy age 1 was a green plastic water bottle that he could bounce around the floor. Expensive toys are not necessary.

soremummy · 22/04/2008 10:29

No way are you a bad mummy look at the thought you have put in to the card and blanket for her. My lo is only getting the stuff she is getting because I have 3 teenagers and they have bought some of the things for her.

She will love the blanket maybe you could stretch to getting her a little doll or someone can get her one for her birthday woolworths do them for about £4 or £5 suitable from 1 year old. Bet you have a fantastic day with her. Realised that there is just one day between them

PerkinWarbeck · 22/04/2008 10:31

Showofhands - try an argos catalogue! keeps 13 mo DD occupied for ages (flick, flick, rip, rip, point at stuff).

DD's birthday helium balloon was also a huge success.

ShowOfHands · 22/04/2008 10:33

We don't have an argos catalogue. DD destroyed it. Ditto the phone book.

TBH she's happy taking the magnets off the fridge and posting them in any hole bigger than the fridge magnets.

I like the idea of a helium balloon.

bozza · 22/04/2008 10:35

Well she is nearly 4 now, but the best thing she got for her first birthday was the £6 fold-up buggy from ELC. And I think you can get them even cheaper from Asda and the likes. She took her baby round to school in it yesterday. She took it to her cousin's house on Sunday. She played with it round the house on Saturday. While most of the other presents she got (shape sorters, wooden puzzles, fairy costume - now too small) are confined to the loft or passed on this is still a regular.

SOH, my ds got a charity shop music set for his first birthday (rattles, rain makers, xzylophone etc) and adored it.
Rellies bought him a wooden train track which got added and added to on subsequent birthdays which he loved until about 5 months ago (he is 7!)

My friend's dd celebrated her 2nd birthday yesrday and her fave presents were painted plant pots with lemon balm and mint in to say hello to when mum opened the curtains each morning!
And a £1 wooden ladybird clacker!

Lionstar · 22/04/2008 11:02

Yes a wooden Noahs ark here too, we bought the ark, and all the animals can be bought seperately so all the family could choose their favourites. We have written the name of the person who gave each animal underneath it. We didn't think she would actually be that interested in it at 1yo (more of a keepsake), but in fact she LOVES it and has her favourite figures (duck, zebra and Mrs Noah).

Also a tin teaset that comes out every day. In fact 'tupiti' (cup of tea) was one of her first words. Even though we don't use a teapot at home, she still pours the tea, then everyone in the room gets a cup - including her favourite toys!

Oh and on the big day a couple of helium balloons were a BIG hit (and lasted weeks, and went in her keepsake box) and also some bubbles provided endless entertainment.

boobiestoosaggy · 22/04/2008 11:30

i have never spent too much for dc's 1st birthdays ,they dont remember or even have any idea what birthday means,they were quite happy to have a slice of birthday cake.

bugalug · 22/04/2008 12:24

Thanks for ideas everyone! I am loving the wheely bugs, and the Noahs ark suggestions especially (and the tea set). Those wheely bugs are particularly lovely little fellas!

I know what you mean about not going crazy on a 1st birthday boobies (and others), and understand that they LO's don't know what it means, but on the other hand, we don't get much at all for DD, as clothes etc were all from free cycle, and family and friends have been so generous. I would like to get her something special and if she will really enjoy it, especially for a long time, then it will be money well spent. (Hence the research)

showofhands - your blanket sounds lovely! She will adore it! My DD also loves shredding magazines more than anything else at the mo!

Keep the ideas coming though!

Lol at the Argos catalogue - we have had to hide ours from DS (21 months) as he was OBSESSED with it. He had to have either the Thomas page or the ITNG page open - and then would shut it and make you find them again. After the 50th time, it got very boring so the catalogue had to go.

All fine until yesterday when DH, in his wisdom, decided to go into Argos to get a watch and DS spied the big display of catalogues in the doorway! We couldn't leave until he had seen Thomas and Iggle Piggle several times.

ceebee74 · 22/04/2008 12:42

Sorry didn't answer the OP. DS loves his Thomas helterskelter track that we got him for his 1st birthday - it is by far his favourite toy and he still plays with it every single day.

Not much use really though as you were asking about DD's (unless she is into Thomas of course ).

Botbot · 22/04/2008 13:10

ELC baby buggy here too (dd will be 2 in July). She pushes everything around in it, from dolls to fridge magnets to my shoes (for some reason). DP recently made her a doll's cradle, and she loves putting her toys to bed in that too.

cariboo · 22/04/2008 13:34

What are babies doing at 1 yr? Seems so long ago (all of 4 yrs!). I do know that mine had some fantastic toys that they both adored from an early age & played with over & over. Here are the favourites:

Baby Bjorn lounger - they could sit up comfortably & see what was going on as well as bounce;

Tiny Love Gymini - a folding & washable playmat with 2 cloth arches & soft toys & mirrors dangling down - wonderful for babies still on their backs;

Munchkin Mozart Magic Cube - a musical toy that doesn't drive you insane. Mine still play with it 7 years on;

Evenflo Exersaucer - safe alternative to those walkers that babies love but are so dangerous;

Whozit photo album;

Most toys by Manhattan Baby.

HTH!
