My 15 week old in on day 3 now no poo she is in good form and drinking her bottles going to ring GP once they open for some advice as I don't think there is anything I can give at this age is there with GP instruction ? Also don't know how long to leave it anything I'm readying says 3 days. It's not like her usually she goes once a day sometimes more .

Oh, bless her. For a baby, water is the best thing for constipation.

PolaroidPrincess · 01/10/2024 07:29

Is she uncomfortable?

3 days isn't a concern yet I don't think. Have you tried baby massage, cycling the legs etc?

Not for a 3 month old 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ignore this 'advice' OP. I'd call the GP surgery for advice

wishIwasonholiday10 · 01/10/2024 07:35

My DD was an infrequent pooper at that age. The GP said to call if it got to 5 days but we usually had a blowout around then. If they seem uncomfortable call them sooner. No need to give water at that age but make sure you are using the right amount of water to make bottles if formula fed.

Try bicycle legs etc. The Baby Bjorn bouncer also worked for us around then. I had to buy a second cover as we got such frequent poonamis in it.

CheeseWisely · 01/10/2024 07:35

I don't think there's need to worry just yet. Our 16 week old started to sometimes have one day with a poo a few weeks ago and this has now extended to sometimes two or two and a half days without. If she's not seeming uncomfortable I'd be tempted to see how she goes / if she goes today. And don't dress her in anything light coloured! 😳

PolaroidPrincess · 01/10/2024 07:37

Another one who would give water to a 3 month old as well. It can be quite dangerous.

Willow1981 · 01/10/2024 07:47

My baby at that age was going every 5 to 6 days. Bicycle legs helped encourage her as did a warm bath followed by tummy massages.

I would talk to a pharmacist if you can't get a Dr appointment.

Rest assured, it does improve. Now my little one is 16 months. Once she started eating, at 6 months, she started being once or twice a day. Now nursery tell me she is VERY regular.

Noodlesnotstrudels · 01/10/2024 07:50

Have you tried doing the tummy massage routine for constipation? I found this one on YouTube which looks quite similar to the routine I was taught - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fcn6gVX5y4I Often gets things moving for us!

Giving water and sticking things up her bum are both not good ideas.

SunQueen24 · 01/10/2024 07:51

My youngest regularly went 10 days. Neither the GP or the HV were in the least bit concerned. I would give her quite a bit longer but then try some lactulose.

greengreyblue · 01/10/2024 07:53

How is boiled water dangerous? If you’re bottle feeding, it’s used to make up formula!
DD2 had this and HV advised me to give a few sips of water between feeds. Sorted it out. I should add that she is 20 now and not damaged by ….. water!

You can give gripe water at that age which is just herbal water. It’s fine to give a few mls to help them poo.

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 01/10/2024 07:59

If you formula feed then try some of the ready to feed for a day or two. It has more of a laxative effect than powder formula.

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 01/10/2024 08:02

Also the doctor or HV might advise cool boiled water- just an ounce or two. Ignore all the “do not do this” people. An ounce or two of cool boiled water will not harm baby. It just shouldn’t be more than this or in place of formula or breast milk. It is genuinely the advice you are often given for constipation at that age.

I'll see what GP advises thank you

The water isn't dangerous, of course that isn't the issue. At that age they should receive all hydration from milk because giving water leaves them less room for milk and can affect their nutrition. Not a huge problem, but no need to start doing it for the sake of a perfectly normal time without a poo.

ButterAsADip · 01/10/2024 08:08

Mine went 13 days once, around that age. Apparently not a cause for concern! Pretty sure he had movicol, we had a box hanging around for YEARS afterwards because of course a 3 month old only has a tiny amount and they gave a whole box 🙄 See what GP says!

Particularly if you’re breastfeeding (I wasn’t) - v efficienct so not much waste.

mindutopia · 01/10/2024 08:12

I definitely wouldn’t be worrying. 3 days is still very much in the normal range, especially for a formula fed baby. Look up some tummy massages and do things like tiger in a tree pose. But mostly just keep feeding her as normal.

She's constipated and will pass a stool eventually, the GP will advise you that 5 days is when you should take her in about this, my daughter had this for months, it was awful 😔 they eventually gave her laxido, eventually her body started getting into a routine again. Try not to worry too much, warm baths, bicycle legs, tummy massages and maybe even warm water to help.

Midwives in Japan taught me the stick up bum thing, daughter is now 4 months old and no longer needs it but it worked brilliantly. If it's medical advice here, why isn't it okay in the UK?

Because if you overuse it it's thought to make it harder for them to poo on their own.

Yes, overuse.
