Anyone’s children ride out Strep A with no Anti’B’s?

Hi All,
my 5yr old has caught Strep A from an outbreak at school.
Seems generally good in himself, his throat is by no means the worst it could be, definitely red with swollen tonsil. He had the chills last night but I wrapped him up, he had a little sweat and no high temperatures, breathing seems totally fine at the moment but I would say Saturday was likely the first sign of symptoms, so possibly on day 3?

I tested him today and it’s positive, I have a 4mo at home and a little worried she’ll contract it.

any advise as the ‘Healthier together’ app suggests home care at this point with no meds.

At 5yo I'd be taking actual medical advice, from a GP

InformerYaNoSayDaddyMeSnowMeIGoBlameALickyBoom · 30/09/2024 17:53

I wouldn't fuck about with strep A , my dd was hospitalised for 2 months because of it.

LynAsh · 30/09/2024 17:55

@WeeOrcadian Exactly what I’ve done, GP advised Healthier together app, states currently at home care… Meaning no Anti-Bs.

My question is in the Subject line… Has anyone’s children ride out Strep A without Anti-B’s - Not after medical advise, I’m after experience / opinion.

Thanks.

Mine did after what was in hindsight a misdiagnosis of something viral. They got better after about 4-5 days on Calpol but obviously we would have gone to A&E if they'd deteriorated.

LynAsh · 30/09/2024 17:57

@InformerYaNoSayDaddyMeSnowMeIGoBlameALickyBoom This is what I’m terrified about - Was your little one okay at first? When did it take a turn? Would just like to know how likely it is that this could turn.

I thought she had a cold for just over a week, one night her breathing seemed to change, I called an ambulance, she was sort of OK in herself, nothing out of the ordinary for having a cold, but it had caused some complications and ended up having an operation and on intravenous antibiotics for weeks.

It's unusual, but I would always check with a doctor now.

WhatNoRaisins · 30/09/2024 18:03

We did sleep in the same room as until they were recovered as I had a bad feeling that it wasn't chickenpox (it wasn't, they got it the following year) and I was scared that they'd deteriorate overnight.

Strokethefurrywall · 30/09/2024 18:07

Nope, don't fuck with strep - left unchecked it can cause rheumatic fever.

Docs here put DS1 straight on ABs when he was diagnosed with a follow up visit in 3 days as well as strict instructions to bring him to hospital if he didn't respond or deteriorated.

Ciclical · 30/09/2024 18:11

With ab he could go back to school after i think 24h. Without them he maybe contagious quite a while.
So could give it back to those who just had ab

LynAsh · 30/09/2024 19:09

Thanks all - I rushed a last min call with his doctor as I was definitely fobbed off in the first instance. Was shocked id done a strep test at home, stating they are likely unreliable etc and should wait for them to do one!
Though, with an outbreak at school and hurts when swallows and yawns… The probability is very bloody likely.

Anyways, I have managed to gain Anti Bs but now has me worrying in case the lateral was in accurate but I’m sure it’s not - Making me second guess myself ><
I’ve tested and so has my husband, currently not positive but worried for my little 4 mo also.

This

LivelyGoldOrca · 30/09/2024 19:10

swab is what you want. Those strep tests report antigens when there is no infection anymore

LynAsh · 30/09/2024 19:13

@LivelyGoldOrca Read my response -
It was a swab of the back of his throat.

OP posts:
LivelyGoldOrca · 30/09/2024 19:18

like a pcr not antigen? Then the specialist lab will recommend treatment yes?

PigeonLady · 30/09/2024 19:22

Defo wouldn’t fuck about.

I waited 5 days until I got antibiotics. Unfortunately by then it was just too deep into my tonsils.

Took 5 courses of antibiotics over a 2 month period of varying degrees from 5 x 10 days. In the end I think I did just become a carrier.

LynAsh · 30/09/2024 19:22

Literally don’t want to be second guessing myself here - It’s this:

Anyone’s children ride out Strep A with no Anti’B’s?
OP posts:
PigeonLady · 30/09/2024 19:23

What do you mean second guessing? Unnecessary antibiotics aren’t going to kill you. Strep could. So just take the anti b.

LynAsh · 30/09/2024 19:28

@PigeonLady You second guess everything as a bladdy parent when you are in a spin!

APurpleSquirrel · 30/09/2024 19:33

Stop stressing - give your DC the antibiotics & monitor both you & DH for symptoms.
We had a major Group A Strep (GAS) outbreak at school earlier in the year; that meant the Drs were more likely to provide antibiotics as the risks of spreading it around were greater. Left untreated you can be contagious for up to 3 weeks. Whereas 24hrs after first dose you aren't.
Half the school was out with it - both Scarlet fever & tonsillitis.

WhatNoRaisins · 30/09/2024 19:53

Definitely take the antibiotics

Avie29 · 30/09/2024 19:59

Definitely take the antibiotics, my little boy has been in hospital twice with strep A, the first time was 8 months old n he was on high dependency for 5 days the second we caught the symptoms early but he still ended up in hospital for 4 days, bloody nasty xx

whereareyousleep · 30/09/2024 20:52

My DS had strep A leading to scarlet fever twice last December both confirmed by GP swab he was very poorly both times never seen him as ill he needed 3 lots of antibiotics over a 6 week period to finally get rid even the GP was surprised he got scarlet fever twice. Definitely give the antibiotics they can recover on their own from it but the complications are not worth the risk.

LynAsh · 30/09/2024 21:15

Thanks those who are sharing their experiences, I think we are day 2/3 and actually well in himself, apart from mentioning he had a headache and the throat obviously.

He’s now taken his first lot of AB’s, on the strongest dose for his age - So will be administering that every 8 hrs for 10 days. Really hoping that nips it in the bud but am concerned for my lil girl also, so will be booking her an appointment in the morning and attempting a quick swab if she lets me.

I have the Owlet for her and her HR is slightly raised and O2 levels (96/97) only slightly lower than her norm, no temp. Though, could be signs she’s coming down with it.
im just glad the school sent out a mail as otherwise I’d be none the wiser…

OP posts:
LivelyGoldOrca · 30/09/2024 21:26

Glad you took treatment

Just so everyone is aware the tests pictured by op are antigen tests and can be negative and the person can still have strep a, or be after strep a is long gone the antigen tests can still test pos ( even after abs) although original infection gone;

Always treat if suspected

and here is the swab -GPS and clinics have it its a culture, best out there but 2 day turn around at least so if in doubt just get treatment/doc/nurse will treat
