Following as I'm having the same dilemma. Currently swaying towards the yoto as you can record your own stories to play to baby.

Porridgeislife · 26/09/2024 20:58

We went for a Yoto. It apparently has far more longevity and the cards are cheaper than Tonie figurines.

PipsM · 26/09/2024 21:00

We have a Yoto. Gave it to our son when he was about 2 1/2. He fell properly in love with it aged 4/5 and carries it everywhere still now aged 6 1/2. Well worth it in my opinion.

You can record your own stories on Tonies too. They're called Creative Tonies.

I had this dilemma, and went for Tonies because my then-2yo much preferred the shape and style of the figures to a card. Two years later and he listens to it every night.

Withywoods · 26/09/2024 21:00

You can record your own stories for Tonie boxes, too.

We have a Toniebox. DS was given it for his first birthday, he has used it every night since and he's almost 6. No sign of the attraction waning. The figures are pricey but great and he also likes to play with them, too. We don't have a Yoto box but friends do and they also look good but the cards seem flimsy to me and I know we'd lose them. I think they're much of a muchness really, though, both have pros and cons.

Yourethebeerthief · 26/09/2024 21:03

Yoto Mini. No competition. Tonies characters are cute but it's not properly portable and it doesn't have the lifespan of a Yoto player. Have a look at the range of cards they sell.

LaundryIsNotmyFriend · 26/09/2024 21:03

I like the sleep sounds and particularly the sleep radio on the yoto. I also like the mindfulness stories.

BabyDoge · 26/09/2024 21:08

I think it depends on your 2 year old. I got DS a Toniebox as I knew he'd love the colourful cartoon figures, which encouraged him to use the box. He wouldn't have engaged with the Yoto and the cards. He's 4 now and still uses his box every day, it's been the best thing we've bought him.

Newnameahoy · 26/09/2024 21:08

We have a Tonie box - dd has had it since 2.5 and is now 7 - she absolutely loves it. You can record stories etc and now download podcasts to the creative Tonie. There's a broad range of stories and it's so easy to operate, both then and now. The battery life is also great.

Found having the physical figure was great for DD when she was little

I am so glad that this thread is not about baby names 🤣
My kids are older teens now, so no idea which one to go for, sorry!

Procrastinates · 26/09/2024 21:14

Yoto for definite. Everyone I know who got a tonie box has since swapped to a yoto as it has more longevity.

I also never understood why people thought the cards would be flimsy they are as sturdy as a debit card and pretty indestructible.

Ha, I thought exactly the same 😂

This. The Tonies figures are just clutter as well whereas the Yoto cards take up minimal space.

Yoto has a huge range of podcasts, radio stations etc as well.

Yoto

jigglywigglyhungryhippo · 26/09/2024 21:29

And less childish as they grow.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 26/09/2024 21:32

Yoto mini 100%. We have both. Younger DC was given a Tonie. Older DCcliked the audio books so we got him a yoto. It’s much better. Better longevity, cheaper stories, better range for older kids. If we were buying again I’d just go for yoto for sure.

They don't have to be clutter, DS uses them as extra toys and loves tidying them all away.

Lincs90 · 26/09/2024 21:40

They're both great products, so you'll not be going wrong with either.
We went yoto. I preferred the idea of cards over figurines - we've got a wallet they're stored in. I like how much control you have from the app, I like the content they have. My favourite cards are the BBC children's dramas that I remember from childhood. My child's favourite is Peppa Pig...
Yoto customer service is great. We had an issue with the charger that turned out to be a fault. They issued replacement quickly and we got a voucher. No issues since new replacement arrived.
It's a well loved device in our house.

Greentomatoes21 · 26/09/2024 21:54

Yoto Mini for us, hands down. Suits both my 3 year old and 8 year old. Great for use at home and perfect size for travelling. Loads of cards, radio and 'Yoto Daily' new content every day. Customer Service is fantastic too.

drspouse · 26/09/2024 22:03

We have Tonies and they have a few for older kids. If you can, however, turn it off from the app with Yoto that would sway me to the Yoto as you can't turn off/set a timer with Tonies.
My DC recorded his own when the story he wanted wasn't available on Tonies. We tried to get him to take breaks but he read solidly for an hour! He was 10 at the time and he has ADHD.

Glitterandmud · 26/09/2024 22:04

We have a yoto and yoto minis, they have been really good for us. We were pretty early with the yoto, I had seen a friends tonie box but liked the idea of cards rather than figures. The range of cards now is brilliant and they resell well.

My dd is 10 and is still happy with her yoto so they definitely last well. Ds is 8 and uses a mini, it seems quite sturdy (we have a jacket for it), survived caravans, car journeys and flights.

If you look on the referral board there is a thread with codes which will get you money off.

Having said all that, my friend with the tonie box says it's still used nightly too (her ds is also 8). It is definitely more wow factor for dc and the figures harder to lose than the cards!

cheesypinwheel · 27/09/2024 08:52

We've just given my 5yo DS a Yoto mini, I don't know much about Tonies. So I can only really give an opinion on Yoto.

It's amazing, he's completely obsessed with it. I like the podcasts- there are loads available via the app, you can link the podcast to a blank card and then it updates automatically with new episodes. My son has a card for CBeebies radio, one for the Sea Life podcast, one for a children's football podcast.

And the podcasts are free from the app, so we haven't actually had to buy any content yet as he's still enjoying trying new podcasts from the app. There are baby/toddler options on there too, and plenty of options that would suit much older kids, so I feel like it has longevity. The design isn't too babyish, and I think it's quite clever that they've designed a product that is usable and enjoyable for babies through to upper primary.

I wouldn't worry about the cards too much. They're sturdy and extremely easy to put in the slot.

It also has some quite useful control features- I can use the app to preset the brightness/volume. So, for example, if 7:30 is the time I want him to wind down to sleep, I can set the Yoto so that it won't go above x volume after 7:30 at night. Or I can set it so that it won't go above a certain volume on earphones.

Highly recommend!

Sorry, that's definitely a big lot of dust-gathering clutter to me!

Alicana · 27/09/2024 09:26

Yoto hands down!! It’s brilliant, portable, cards are sturdy and take up less space. We take it on holiday and it’s a comfort at bedtime as it feels like home. I would have been concerned they’d play with and lose the figurines on the Tony, also it looks a bit babyish for older children. I’ve never lost a card on the Yoto, but you can just copy it to a blank card if you do.

As soon as you play a card it downloads onto your app. This is useful for car journeys as I connect my phone to the car and don’t even need the box. You can also switch it on/off and change stories via your phone. The latter is handy if you have a child who pulls out any excuse for you to come up again at bedtime after lights out - ‘Daddy I want a different story’, ‘ok which one’, ‘Paddington’, ‘ok, there you go’!

Ours had one from 18m and still loves it!
