What’s the most amazing thing your children have that you didn’t?

A bit of a lighthearted one, but here you are:

What is the most amazing thing that your children have (or have access to) that you didn’t?

For me it is definitely YouTube. The entire concept of wondering how your refrigerator works and 10 seconds later watching a complete diagram unfold before you, or an in-depth factory tour… that’s insane when I think of how in my school years we just hoped maybe there was a dusty old VHS with a tour of a crayon factory on it. I don’t love this world of the internet that our children are growing up in, but from art lessons to fascinating science experiments YouTube > catalogues of pricey VHS tapes.

A loving mum
Confidence
A stress free school environment
A room of his own
Foreign holidays, going on planes
Lighthearted: blue tac (it wasn't a thing in my home country)

The best thing I had that he doesn't is four amazing grandparents living nearby.

Why do people have to post downers on a light hearted thread?

Abit like you then?! 😉

Yours is the comment I’ve experienced as a ‘downer’.

Smartphones, obviously, so easy to get information, do things, find out things, keep in touch, keep track, play games, do banking, make calls, find themselves on a map, check the travel time to get somewhere, check train times, leave messages, take pictures.....

Being able to take instant photos with their phones and not have to buy a clunky camera, take photos and then send off the film or take to a shop and have it developed.

OldTinHat · 14/09/2024 17:33

Being able to swim.

Parents that tell them they love them and are proud. Aren’t afraid to say “sorry I was wrong” and enough confidence to be themselves

Yes this is very true. Also the endless casual opportunities that a 'middle class' upbringing confers. My childhood was so limited and impoverished in many ways although I had the benefit of being loved and wanted which set me apart from some children in my estate.

HideTheCroissants · 14/09/2024 17:47

Parents who love them and would do (almost) anything for them.

TeamPolin · 14/09/2024 17:48

Security. He will never have to question if the electric meter will run out or there will be enough food in the cupboards. I was hyper aware of our poverty as a child....

Amazing weather, and all the activities that come along with it

DannSindWirHelden · 14/09/2024 17:49

Ignoring the obvious tech stuff, my children's ability to see their favourite authors and other celebrities in person, get autographs, hear them give talks, get books signed by them etc would have been unimaginable to me as a rural child whose (loving) parents didn't happen to share her interests.

Ghilliegums · 14/09/2024 17:49

A horse.

She has a dog. She has been taught to cook and has been making delicious meals from the age of 12. When I went to university at 18 I couldn’t even boil an egg. And I always longed for a dog
