17 month old nap schedule

Hi!

Could anyone help me with an “ideal” nap schedule for a 17 month old? She is fighting her second nap. For MONTHS she’s done the below and it’s worked perfectly but not so much in the last week:

0730 Wake
1015-1045 - Nap
1545-1630 - Nap
1930 - Bed

We tried a lunchtime nap but she was exhausted by then and only slept 40 mins and then was crying. But recently in her second nap she walks around in her cot babbling and then cries.

thank you!

Sounds like she’s ready for a 1 nap day. It’ll prob take her a while to adjust, so try and just stretch out that first wake period until 11, 11-30 at first? As she gets used to not having an afternoon nap she’ll maybe start sleeping for a bit longer.

Thank you! What would I do about lunch? After?

My 17 month old has 1 nap 2 hours in length about 12:30-1ish

Generally wakes up at 7ish and goes to bed at 7ish depending on exact nap time x

Oh and lunch is before about 11:30

BuenosAiresTango · 07/09/2024 18:26

Going to try tomorrow! When I last tried a one nap day earlier this week I put her down at 1300 and she was up crying loudly at 1345! Maybe ti was too late and she was over tired!

Yes one nap a day at that age. Put her down for a nap a bit later, 11.30 or so, and give her lunch whenever she wakes up.

Thank you for replying. Will give it a try tomorrow! Really hope it works!

I agree with PPs trying to get her to start the nap earlier and if she manages to sleep 2h then she should be ok until bedtime.

Hope so too. When we tried at 1pm the other day she only managed 45 and was exhausted!

I also done the nap at 11am when my DD was ready to drop down to 1 nap. She’d sleep for 2 hours and be fine until bedtime, done lunch after the nap. Gradually moved it later until it was after lunch.

When you say gradually moved it later, how did you do that? Any tips?

After about a month, I started giving her lunch at 11:30 and put her down after. Some days she still needed the 11am nap, other days she was fine until after lunch. She was about 17 months when she dropped to 1 nap, by 19 months she was doing the nap after 12pm lunch.

We did the 5-2-5 pattern at that age. So up at about 7am for 5 hours, nap for 2 hours till about 2pm, up for 5 hours, and then bed at 7pm for 12 hours (ish!). A good, large lunch at about 11.30 usually did the trick!

Hmm but I don’t know what I’d do about lunch. As she has breakfast at 8 usually, and lunch at 1130 seems too soon?!

My daughter was on one nap a day from 12 months. Around 11-2. She's just turned 2 and still sleeps 2 hours or more at lunch time.

TeddyBeans · 07/09/2024 21:37

DD is 18 months and has had one long nap usually 11-1, 12-2 sort of timing and has been since about a year old. Try it, you can always revert back if it doesn't improve things

Did she eat lunch after her nap? What time did she wake? DD wakes between 7-8 so breakfast is at around 8 so wondering how to do lunch around her one nap as don’t want it too early but don’t want her to go hungry in her nap either!

Don't over think it.

Give her some food at 11ish, she'll eat what she wants. Down for a nap. Then if she didn't eat much offer her something else.

Very true. I haven’t changed her routine for so long I think I’m a bit nervous!

We did breakfast straight away (for us that was 7am). If breakfast is at 8am, then perhaps just move the 5-2-5 on an hour? We found it was important that they napped on a full stomach...!

hanc66 · 07/09/2024 21:45

We've just gone to one nap (nearly 15 months). We just bit the bullet and went for it when she was refusing her second nap for about a week.

Wakes at 0700, BF when wakes and breakfast at 0800. We give a snack around 1030/1045, she then goes down for a nap between 1115/1130 then sleeps for 2 hours. Then when she wakes I offer her lunch, some days she eats more than others at lunch time. Then bed time at 7! We are about 2 weeks in and all seems good so far :)

shakeitoffsis · 08/09/2024 08:05

Yeah she ate some before some after, I aren't strict on when she eats as long as she eats something. She wakes around 8am and goes to bed at 7pm; sleeps through.

BuenosAiresTango · 08/09/2024 12:32

Gave her some lunch and just put her down and she’s fighting the nap (we skipped the morning nap too!) fingers crossed she falls asleep!

Did she go to sleep op?

My daughter can have lunch either side of a nap, try not to worry about that bit so much 😊 just keep her topped up on water and she'll be alright
