Pumping help

Hello.
A lactation specialist doesn't think my 1 month old is getting enough milk (pooing every 2-3 days and a poor latch).
She's recommended I pump 8 times a day and cup feed what I express.
I've just pumped for the first time and got 80ml. LO just screams when we try to cup feed.
I don't know how this is going to be sustainable. He feeds for 45 mins, then I need to pump, then try to cup feed, then he needs to sleep and then it's time to go again?!
Any advice?!

@mmmare

I don't understand why you have concerns and are struggling with expressing and cups and so on when the baby is putting on weight so beautifully. Could you try to explain so we can help?

I think the whole thing has stressed me so much that I'm now over analysing everything. I feel like he's not doing nice rhythmic swallowing, and am concerned he's not feeding efficiently. Which may be true if his tongue tie isn't quite right still.
However he's just done a huge poo and weed all over me twice while I was cleaning him up! 😃
I think I need to focus on feeding and calming myself down!

I think you need to see a different lactation consultant. At this age I’d be looking at wet nappies and weight gain to guide whether they were getting enough, not number of poos. Their time should have been spent helping you improve the latch, not knocking your confidence and adding a gruelling schedule to the mix.

Just to add, DD now 20mths was combi fed from day 2 thanks to a well meaning, but ultimately incorrect midwife who made me think my supply wasn’t enough (stupid in hindsight given my milk didn’t even properly come in til day 3). She was bottle fed during those times and never suffered nipple confusion, we just stuck with paced feeding to mimic breastfeeding. By week 10 we were back ebf, and she’s still breastfeeding now.

It sounds like you’re doing a fabulous job and your baby is thriving so please don’t take this woman’s “advice” to heart x

@mmmare Honestlty, if he's gaining weight, he's feeding efficiently. Try to focus on that-and be incredibly proud of that! Sack the "lactation consultant". I've heard a lot of rubbish breastfeeding advice in my time-but that must be the absolute worst. Try to relax. Feed your baby whenever he asks. Make sure you're eating and drinking (especially drinking). Rest. Remember feeding your baby is your job at the moment. And tell yourself frequently that you're incredibly clever and doing a wonderful job.

My daughter had fussy at the breast and poor latch due to food allergies and reflux. Feeding hurt so she didn't want to feed "properly"

Have they been checked for tongue tie - posterior ones are sometimes tricky to spot

sorry I was a twat for not noticing that your LO had a tongue tie cut at one week. Just to say though that my babies all had tongue tie but my third and youngest one had to have his snipped again at five weeks old. The specialist nurse told me that sometimes when they are snipped very early on they can re-fuse.his had and he had had his initially snipped at just one week old when we were admitted
to hospital as he had low blood sugars and the tie was spotted
might be worth checking just in case.
the weight gain and everything sounds normal to me though and breastfed newborns don’t poo as much as bottle fed infants necessarily as others have said

She watched me feed and said my attachment and latch weren't quite right. He had a tongue tie cut at 1 week and she also wonders whether something is still not quite right with that, but will be next week that they review that again. Nipples however aren't sore (whereas they were awful when he had the tongue tie!)
He is fussy and unsettled in the evenings and sometimes at the breast randomly during the day. But other times falls asleep happily at the breast.
She's really knocked my confidence and I feel like we're back to square one! Appreciate the reply thank you.

if your nipples aren’t sore i would say the latch is fine, i wouldn’t worry about how much you get out when you pump, babies are much more efficient at getting milk out than a pump, when i pumped i got 3oz and that was 6 months in (i wanted to make some ice lollys for her in the warmer weather) lol the evening fussiness is probably cluster feeding, my little girl used to spend 2-3 hours sometimes swapping between breasts before she finally settled, she settles much quicker now, i bet it has knocked your confidence a bit but honestly it sounds like you are doing great, just keep feeding on demand (can sometimes feel like thats all you are doing in the early months) find a good tv show to binge watch haha, i think during the first 3 months i managed to watch 3 different series so she was on the breast ALOT, ignore your “lactation specialist” cause she sounds like shes never breastfed in her life, and go with what you feel, oxytocin plays a big role in producing breastmilk so just relax into it, no pressure, leave other chores to someone else, and have a drink n snacks nearby lol xx

Just an update, we've had 3 poos today and I feel he's fed well. Went to my parents house and think I'm much more relaxed. Happy mum happy baby?! Thanks everyone for the replies ☺️
