At what age is it cringey to refer to your parents as "mummy and daddy"?

My nephew is 21

DH and I cringe every time

His younger brother doesn't (too cool, no doubt)

I think its a posh persons thing. My two poshest freinds, both in their 40's still call them mummy and daddy.

schneebly · 15/04/2008 11:12

ewwww @ 21

Is he posh?

schneebly · 15/04/2008 11:12

Depends on where you are. In Northern Ireland, everyone does it and it actually sounds quite nice. However, in the bit of England where I live, it would sound a little odd certainly after primary school.

HuwEdwards · 15/04/2008 11:12

agree with maidamess. Should be outta that by teens.

Bink · 15/04/2008 11:15

Gosh. Partly personality too.
Ds firmly (and clearly, with level-faced explanations) switched me from Mummy to MUM at just 8.
Dd will be calling me Mummy when she's 50.

depends on your school/school friends I think. Once your peers make fun of you for using mummy/daddy I'm sure most dc would drop those terms

In my world - after about 6 or 7. However, I'm dead common I am. Posh rich horsey people (got them not look like them btw ) talk of their 86 year old mummy who's been on the sherry again.

ChicaLovesHerLocalGreengrocer · 15/04/2008 11:30

I call my parents mummy and daddy to their faces, but if I'm refering to them I'd say my mother or my father.
(and I'm 27)

stleger · 15/04/2008 11:33

By bthe age of 25, I was an 'orphan'. I'd be happy to call my parents anything, really.

Joash · 15/04/2008 11:35

about 6 or 7 - depends on the child (it never bothered me until I had to work and socialise with adults who still called their parents Mummy and Daddy... it should be compulsory that these words are for child use only).

Weegle · 15/04/2008 11:36

I call mine mummy and daddy to their faces as that is what they prefer. However, I wouldn't dream of calling them that in conversation to friends - then they are my parents/mum/dad etc. I hated it throughout my teenage years but they refuse to respond to anything else. It really doesn't bother me now but won't be inflicting the same on my kids!

No19 · 15/04/2008 11:37

What Chica said, and I'm 36.

phraedd · 15/04/2008 11:41

my children are 9, 7 and 4 and still call us mummy and daddy - although sometimes the 9 yr old calls me mama for some unknown reason

My dad is Irish and he and all his siblings always called their parents 'Mammy & Daddy'. I agree - it sounds OK in an Irish accent, but cringey when English people do it!

Psychomum5 · 15/04/2008 11:49

my neice and nephews still call their mum n dad 'mummy and daddy' and they are 17, 16 and 14. it sounds odd from the boys yet for my neice, who is 17, it still sounds normal, which I admit makes me sound odd.

my DD1 (14) asked recently whether we minded if she called us mum n dad, which we replied was fine.....her choice as she would then feel more comfortable.......she still however calls us mummy and daddy and I love it.

tis her choice tho as to what she calls us, as long as it is along the lines of mum, dad, mummy, daddy, mumma, dadda.......etc etc.

all the others call us mummy and daddy bar DS2 (5) who has always called us mum n dad unless hurt, cross, ill.......most odd

nametaken · 15/04/2008 13:05

mummy and daddy - fine
mother and father - fine
mum and dad - common

Bumdiddley · 15/04/2008 13:09

I'm the same as Weegle. (I'm 32)

In fact I'm proud of calling them mummy and day. I was bullied when I was 7 for calling them that.

Slubberdegullion · 15/04/2008 13:11

I call my parents mummy and daddy. And today I am 33. Yes one whole year older and no signs of giving it up yet.
