How close in age are your children

If you have more than one child, how close in age are they? Me and DH have been talking about trying for another in the future, we have a 6 month old. We're not trying at the moment yet we haven't been that careful either as if it happens it happens, we struggled to conceive our LO so another child would be so lovely whatever the age gap

I had secondary infertility so my first two are nine years apart.
Then I had a very very surprise pregnancy so my last one is 19 and 10 years younger than her siblings

@inquisitiveinga don't apologise, I love a positive thread on here!

Thanks to you all for your replies, so interesting to hear of all the different dynamics. Whatever happens, if we're lucky enough to fall pregnant again, I know it's probably never going to be the perfect time but worth it all the same

2 years 4 months - so I got pregnant when first was about 19 months after a few months of trying.

Absolutely lovely age gap now they are 4&2. Little BFFs. Youngest will be LOST when the older one goes to school in Sept. :(

Very similar with mine. They are 27 months apart, so 4 and 2 now and the big one is starting school in September.

It took us a while to conceive first time so started trying when the oldest wasn't even 1.

Love that they are pretty close in age and best friends

small age gap was very hard! But easier now they’re older

15 months. Both girls. Perfect gap. They don't ever remember life without each other, and were best friends as children - best friends now too. Had a few little arguments in their teens over several years, as you would expect. But now mid-late 20s they're best friends, and do lots of things together, and with their partners. And they have several individual friends, and a group of joint friends.

Everyone I know with a 3 year or closer gap has a lot of family support on hand op, lots of relatives to babysit etc. What's your set up? We've got zero family nearby which is why it couldn't have been any closer than 3.5 years for us personally.

It's something we'd definitely need to think about. We do have some family around, whether they could commit to helping out is another story. In-laws are up and down to their other house and my DP is carer for ill DM. I'd have to become a SAHM which we could afford but I do like working and the independence it brings.

DD1 - 10.5yo
DD2 - nearly 4yo
DS - 4mo

The bigger age gap made baby DD2 stage much easier without a toddler to deal with too. 10y is great too and DD1 really mothers DS. 3.5y is hard work but they will enjoy things more together. Our eldest has outgrown a lot of things suitable for DD2.

UpgradedTitanCameraMan · 26/07/2024 21:54

18 months. Told dh if I weren't pregnant by 18 months after the 2nd we weren't having a third. Close age gaps work for our situation, many I know wait until at least 3-5 years. Personally I couldn't go back to the newborn/baby days once out of them.

Still love a snuggle with someone else's babe though.

newmumma32 · 26/07/2024 21:56

@HeySummerWhereAreYou aww this is cute! I was the youngest with much older brothers so almost felt like an only child at times with the age gap and being the only girl. I was always jealous of the girls at school that had sisters and were best friends!

26 months between DC 1 and DC 2
23 months between DC 2 and DC3
30 months between DC3 and DC4.

The age gap between the first 2 was fine, but I knew I needed a longer gap after No3 before having any more.

Normallynumb · 26/07/2024 22:04

I have 3
3 years 9 months between each of them!

pambeesleyhalpert · 26/07/2024 22:08

2years 4 months

Nannyfannybanny · 26/07/2024 22:13

6 years between 1 and 2, and 2 and 3..in the 70s ,80s you had to accrue maternity leave,as I was part time. I also had miscarriages and was ill and hospitalised with each pregnancy. 9 years till the last one.... second marriage. All worked out brilliantly. I was a grandparent a year after having my last.

middleagedandinarage · 26/07/2024 22:15

2 years 8 months
I really love this gap, now 5.5 and almost 3. I feel like they're close enough to play together but a big enough gap for my eldest to take on the role of big sister, she's likes to be the big girl look after her little sister

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 26/07/2024 22:16

4.5 years (because of frequent miscarriages)

We wanted a smaller gap but it just didn't happen for us.

In hindsight it was great because eldest was potty trained, more independent, could help me if needed, and was a really good big sister, she also started school 4 weeks after DS was born so I still got a good chunk of alone time with DS when she was at school... before covid hit in the March, anyway.

They're quite far apart in ages now (nearly 5 and 9.5) but manage to play together a bit and they both care for each other very much but argue like cat and dog of course

weegiemum · 26/07/2024 22:17

Almost exactly 2 years between dd1 and ds
22 months between ds and dd2

So 3 under 4 for a couple of months!

They're now 24, 22 and 20 and are still very close.

TomatoSandwiches · 26/07/2024 22:18

I have three, they are 16, 12 & 8.

17 months between 2&3
22 months between 3&4

5 years and 2 months.

My 5 year old adores his baby brother 🥰

MrsTartanTeacosy · 26/07/2024 22:27

I have:

29, 26, 19, 17, 16, 8 and 6. All get on brilliantly and pretty much always have.

familyissues12345 · 26/07/2024 22:28

5 years 1 month. Pretty easy, nice age gap generally.

theteddybear · 26/07/2024 22:33

2.5 years. They are now 4 and 7 and I can see why a closer age gap is gd. I just cldnt handle a smaller one than we had. Aim was for 2.5-3.5yrs age gap and it happened very quickly second time around. First took almost a year to conceive.

My sil has a 4yr age gap and it's quite tricky as youngest is too young for things older one wants to do and some things older one thinks is babyish.

bookishblondie · 26/07/2024 22:43

2.5 years between my two

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 26/07/2024 22:44

I have three - all planned. 17, 14 and 4 ❤️
