Is this the moro reflex which has startled him whilst sleeping to cry and should I be worried about hearing?

Sounds normal to me - the outside world is scary and loud to babies

Keep an eye on it but it doesn’t sound distressing

Echobelly · 15/07/2024 09:50

I'm not sure why you're worried about hearing if it's evident he did hear a sound? But doesn't appear to be anything to worry about from what you said.

My oldest did seem to startle at small noises for the first few weeks but I didn't see any reason to worry about it. As pp said, it's their first time in a world with irregular sudden noises.

I, too, am confused. Why would you have concerns about baby’s hearing?

This all sounds normal to me OP. Babies/kids are weird - sometimes mine would be woken by the tiniest noise and other times they'd sleep through a full thunder storm. Depends on stage of sleep cycle and the type of noise I guess. But yes I'd say it's normal for babies to be woken/startled by a loud noise.

It's probably still startle reflex bless him. Do you swaddle him ?that can make them a bit more secure

Peonies12 · 15/07/2024 09:59

I can't imagine what loud noise what be in the home that would cause damage. Hearing damage would be caused by repeated exposure to incredibly loud music or noise like a construction site.

Seas164 · 15/07/2024 09:59

Their hearing will be fine, please don't worry. All babies wake at loud noises, just like adults do. They're just little humans, they'll be absolutely fine.

Thanks, just get worried as he’s still so little so every thing sets me off. Hoping this will ease as he gets older

Ok so long as they were not shouting at you! Was a bit worried for you just then. Your baby will be totally fine. Congrats on the new arrival

Oh not at all! Thank you. Need to relax slightly as I get worked up a bit

Shouting is absolutely not going to damage his hearing.

Butterflysunshine01 · 15/07/2024 10:31

Aw same happened to my three month old when we scored the goal! Poor thing was asleep in his pram and got a startle and took a while to settle xx it won’t damage their hearing at all don’t worry x

Echobelly · 15/07/2024 10:46

There's no way someone shouting once or even repeatedly in another room can damage anyone's hearing.

Not really. It just seems a silly thing to worry about

You didn't need to be so dismissive you could have just scrolled away if you thought the op was being silly.

DavidBeckhamsrightfoot · 15/07/2024 11:04

Are you OK?
Babies can be scary, something you love so fiercely, that you can't imagine living without and the unknown.

But this is extreme. How are you doing otherwise?

HcbSS · 15/07/2024 11:06

Oh dear OP.

The world is LOUD. Motorbikes, pneumatic drills, trains, you name it, and babies hear these things. Why, applying your fears/theories, is a higher percentage of the population not deaf?

you will laugh at this in a few years time.
