3 year old excessive thirst

Hi everyone.

My 3 year old DD has always been a big drinker. She guzzled her bottles and milk as a baby and always drank lots of water and milk.

I never thought anything of it until preschool mentioned it to me recently.

Since then (on Friday) I have kept a tally of how many drinks she has. She mostly drinks water or milk, with the occasional squash or diluted fresh juice.

She has had 14 drinks today in total, she has a large munchkin cup if you know the one I mean, so it's quite a big cup rather than a small beaker.

When she does drink each drink, she will more often or not guzzle them down. She does pee very often and her pee is clear. I honestly thought it was just good hydration!

Is this normal? Or anything to worry about? No other symptoms of anything, otherwise a very strapping healthy preschooler. She is slightly on the smaller side, but I am petite and she's plotting on her charts correctly. I'm now worried about over hydration.

Thank you!

Oh that is good news. Can you keep us posted if you don’t mind I’ve been thinking of you today xx

familyissues12345 · 12/07/2024 22:32

I'm so pleased they're taking this seriously, it's a good job she's got such a great Mum advocating for her.

Let us know how she gets on x

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/07/2024 03:27

Please ignore the ignorant poster who abused you. You have done everything correctly for your daughter. You have sought medical advice and then followed it.

You're a fantastic Mum. Hopefully your dd will get a diagnosis and treatment. Good luck!

Thank you, this has also been really helpful to read. I really hope you get some answers and some help from the endocrinologist.

Out of curiosity, what does an endocrinologist do? I've heard of them and seen them on here. Maybe asking for a referral there for DD might be worth while depending on what paeds find?

I'm so sorry I've not replied but so happy to see that you DD is getting the help she needs. You're an amazing mum. Stay strong lovely.

Endocrinologist deals with hormones etc. My daughter 2 got an appointment for December so I rang up and said she's been sent as urgent from a paeds consultant and GP she can't wait 6 months. I got a call back several hours later that the paeds Endocrinologist wants to see her this Monday so I'm very relieved.

Hi everyone, thank you for all the messages and apologies about my absence over the weekend.

DDs drinking is increasing daily, I have left a message with the secretary of the consultant we saw on Friday. She is due to call me today anyway, but I just can't get a handle on her drinking and it's worrying me.

DDs speech is absolutely fine in the morning, wakes up saying all of her sentences and words. By the time it's afternoon her speech regresses. By which point she has drank an awful lot. I don't know if it's linked at all but it's very strange!

They should be calling me today to book the MRI so hopefully that will be soon. She will also be having an EKG done, around the same time but probably not on the same day I'm guessing due to the GA.
Hope everyone has a good weekend and thank you for thinking of my little bub❤️

I think if you are worried and the drinking is worsening and she is more symptomatic you likely will be asked by her consultant to come to the hospital A&E for admission, observation and more urgent tests. I would start packing a bag for you and DD with clothing and some things to keep her occupied just in case.

Hope she is ok.
My daughter had low sodium due to excessive drinking which gave her similar symptoms.
We never did find out why she was drinking excessively but she grew out of it

Ihatewinding · 15/07/2024 19:27

Hope you heard back from the paediatrician and have a plan 🤞🏻

Jellycats4life · 15/07/2024 19:48

It does sound like the fact she worsens as the day goes on means it’s linked to her water intake somehow. Definitely agree that if you’re very worried, go to A&E. If she needs an emergency admission, she needs an emergency admission.

What a horrible limbo to be in. Hope you get a diagnosis soon.

Sunshine085 · 15/07/2024 21:24

@ShallWeGoToTheFirepit did you hear back from the consultant. Hope your DD will get the help she needs soon.

Seiheiki · 16/07/2024 10:07

Wishing you and little one the very best x

ShallWeGoToTheFirepit · 16/07/2024 10:19

Hi everyone, I did hear back!

She has her MRI next week. Her urine output is quite a lot so she isn't absorbing all of the water she's consuming.
I'm still charting everything. I'm just keeping an eye but if any changes happen I'll of course take her to the hospital. She seems happy and fine in herself which is good!

She actually drank a little less in the evening yesterday. I'm trying to figure out if there's a pattern forming or not. She's gone back to preschool today, they're keeping an eye also and they will call me to collect her if there are any changes or any concerns. The preschool is literally a stones throw away, so I can collect her at anytime if need be. Thank you for all the messages and thoughts, there's a lot going on right now so I really appreciate you all :)

You sound like you’re doing a great job op. Hope you get answers soon from the bloods and mri

Sunshine085 · 16/07/2024 13:27

Glad tests are being carried out quickly

CrystalTits · 18/07/2024 19:58

Keep up the great work OP.

Let us know what happens (if you want to) - if you do get a diagnosis of DI there are some helpful support groups I can link you with.

I’m keeping you both in my thoughts x

NormaNormalPants · 18/07/2024 20:51

@ShallWeGoToTheFirepit just wanted to say you’ve been a fabulous advocate for your DD. Fingers crossed you get some answers soon.

ShallWeGoToTheFirepit · 18/07/2024 21:27

Hi everyone,

So DDs drinking has calmed down over the past few days, she has been averaging 2 litres a day.
Unfortunately she had a seizure last night. I managed to get some of it on video. The consultant has seen it as I emailed it to her. She's getting back to me tomorrow but she's going to speed up the MRI.
Her seizures are absent and the rules are if she has more than 1 in 24 hours, take her to A&E. if she loses consciousness or anything changes basically, dial 999 / A&E.

She's been fine today, just a bit quiet. Will report back when the consultant gets back to me.

She's doing really well bless her, she's not really aware of what's going on.

Thank you for all of your well wishes and thoughts, it's so kind of you all to offer your support ❤️

Crikey OP, it sounds like you're doing a great job but that sounds really stressful. I'm glad her drinking has calmed down a bit though. I don't really have anything useful to add but wanted you to know I'm thinking of you both.

TheShellBeach · 19/07/2024 14:28

Hi @ShallWeGoToTheFirepit I hope you get some answers soon.

Bells3032 · 24/07/2024 21:44

@ShallWeGoToTheFirepit how are you doing?? Hope the MRI went well..been thinking of you

ShallWeGoToTheFirepit · 25/07/2024 10:10

Hi everyone!

Thanks so much for your thoughts and messages.
My bub has had quite a rough few days. She has had another few seizures and each time they're getting a little longer and she's getting more wobbly and exhausted after each one. They are toying with starting medication now, as it could be a sign that they progress into convulsive seizures. They're being very careful not to over treat or under treat her. Her MRI is scheduled for 8th August and her EEG is Monday.

I've videoed what I can, and have now been given a protocol as to what to do with each seizure, when to take her in or dial 999 etc. but every seizure she has I have to email the consultant (well her secretary I'm guessing) but she always gets back to me within a few hours.
The care so far has been really, really good. DD broke up for summer holidays now which is good, so I can spend more time with her and keep an eye. She's still at the childminders a couple of days a week, so I've given her the protocol and if there are any signs of anything, I'll pick her up.

Her drinking has plateaued a little. She still drinks a lot, but she's back down to about 14 cups rather than the 20. Still a huge amount, but at least it's not what it was.

Thanks for all the well wishes, DD is being an absolute trooper. So proud of her.

Oxford university hospitals fluid intake guidence

Hiya,

This has already been investigated by the hospital and I'm aware of how much fluid is too much.
The consultant has ruled out diabetes / water diabetes and are doing other tests in the meantime.

It's not the fluid intake that's the concern here now, it's the seizures, which hopefully we'll get some answers from in the next coming weeks fingers crossed

I have since read your other posts. I'm glad your daughter is in good hands and wish her well. A very scary time for you.
Hopefully the guidelines will support the others worrying about their child's input.
Good luck, take care of yourself too.
