What time does your 10yo go to bed?

10yo DS is seeming like he needs a later bedtime. We normally read to him until 8pm, then he reads for an hour and goes to sleep.

Recently he’s still been awake at 9:30pm saying he’s bored of reading.

He wakes up well rested at 6-6.30.

So should he go up later?

We just moved our 10yo’s bedtime back to 9 from 8/8:30ish for the same reasons. He still struggles to get to sleep but at least he’s not tossing and turning for quite so long.

The kids on our street play out later than that but ours get so tired and grumpy in the morning if they don’t get enough sleep.

I guess everyone’s different.

good luck

9:30 on a school night 10:30 weekends. I would say he usually goes to sleep around 10 and bounces out of bed at 7.

Tisfortired · 27/06/2024 07:40

10.5 yo DS has to come in from playing at 8:30, is in bed for 8:45 after shower and teeth and is also allowed to read until he falls asleep which is usually around 9:15/9:30.

Saturday is his late night when we let him stay up with us but he is also snoring on the couch by 10 😂

It's 9pm in our house too. Id prefer earlier but
sometimes it runs later.

Ridingthegravytrain · 27/06/2024 07:43

In bed reading 7-8. Sometimes turns light off at 7.45 if tired. Up at 6.30 for school

Stays up until 8 at weekends watching tv with us

Clearinguptheclutter · 27/06/2024 07:45

I try to send upstairs at about 9 and usually asleep before 10
however he doesn’t have to wake up before 8am

FlamingoYellow · 27/06/2024 07:54

Mine goes to bed at 9pm and is usually allowed to read in bed until 9.30pm, although if he's looking really tired I tell him to go straight to sleep.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/06/2024 08:20

9pm weekdays

Fontainebleau007 · 27/06/2024 08:29

Bed at 8, some TV if there's something on or reading until 9/9:30

RedToothBrush · 27/06/2024 08:34

DS is 9 nearly 10.

We've had battles over it for years, but ultimately settled for what actually works.

He goes to bed at 9pm (creeps later occasionally). He gets up reasonably late at 7 - 7.30am. We try and get him to read for an hour before when we can.

I think this is key. So many people talk about bedtime but never when their kids get up. I get horrified looks by parents about it but their kids are up at like 5.30am which is bonkers.

The time he gets up, works for us. Bedtime works for him.

Also remember it's much more difficult in the summer months too.

TuesdayWhistler · 27/06/2024 08:35

Depends what time you have to be up.
10/11 hours sleep around that age.so work back from that.

My DD gets woken at 8, so bed at 10.

She's turned 11 recently but I won't change it till she hits high school.

MySocksAreDotty · 27/06/2024 08:37

Just turned 10. Bedtime 8:30 on weekdays and 9pm on weekends.

eurochick · 27/06/2024 09:10

We aim to go up to get ready for bed between 7:30 and 8, then read until 8-8:15. Then she can read to herself for about 15 mins. She gets up at 7 for school. It seems earlier than most on here but she still complains about being tired a lot.

Looking for advice on schoolyard politics: a girl in my Year 5 daughter’s class recently accused my daughter of stealing (not true) and also called her and another girl fat (also not true). Should I tell her mum?! We’re friendly, and she and the dad are lovely, kind people, but their daughter is a nightmare! What would you do?!

TeenLifeMum · 27/06/2024 10:21

Mine went to bed at 7.30 until year 5 then it moved to 8pm but was creeping closer to 9pm so we’ve recently said 9pm weekdays and flexible over weekends. They’re in year 8. I’m sure bedtimes on mn used to be earlier on these threads a few years ago.

i know my dtds have friends who go to bed later but they’ve always needed their sleep.

MinnieMountain · 27/06/2024 12:48

It’s interesting to see the variety of times.

DS will go to bed earlier if he’s tired. He’s always been on the lower end of sleep needs.

I always find the UK has really early bedtimes. In Ireland we don't tend to have the same practice.

Theseers · 27/06/2024 18:17

9 years old - 10pm. We don’t have dinner until 8pm. She’s up at 6:30 for breakfast club.

Shes not tired and not moaning in the morning.

8/8:30 would absolutely not work for us! We have dinner and then get our “steps” for the day (we all have separate goals on our watches/fitbits etc)

Sandysandwich · 27/06/2024 18:47

Goes up at 9, reads for a bit and is usually asleep by 9:45.
Wakes at 7/7:30

This is exactly our routine too. I’m always worried that it’s not enough sleep as they’re always tired in the morning but they won’t sleep if we tried an earlier bedtime.

If they are tired it may be worth a blood test. I have heard a lot of children recently having low iron no dietary restrictions so not picked up at first.

Bloody hell that's very early for 10 years old! Especially at weekends, wow

Oh thank you for that advice. I was just reading a thread about a ten year old having a very poor diet which resonated with me, so I might well do exactly that.

dontforgetme · 30/06/2024 10:33

Mine is up by 8.30/8.45 and reads til about half 9. She is up 7.10am. . The weekends we are more lax she's usually up by 10pm and no reading.

MoreIcedLattePlease · 30/06/2024 10:34

We start winding down with DS (12, SEN) and DD (10) around 8.30 on a week day. They are then in bed, ready to sleep for 9. They are busy and DD in particular does a few activities outside of school so she needs sleep.
They are generally up around 7ish.

Friday/Saturday we let them until around 9.30 and they’re generally asleep by 10.

We’re on holiday at the moment and expect them in bed by 10 ish, but we’re letting them lead more. No screens past 9 though.

DS1 is 16 and pleased himself.
