What was your daftest baby purchase?!

currently packing away expensive outfits my baby has never worn or worn once .... thinking wow was a waste .

it got me reflecting on what others have wasted money on before your baby?!

my worst item was an electric nail file that everyone raved about?!!! It barely made a dent to my babies nails. Immediately had to buy traditional clippers.

A swaddle strap!
Not this expensive thankfully, though in a much more lurid colour.

Frankly it was too creepy and well, bondagey to use.

Fancy padded high chair. An absolute pain to clean, took up too much space and we kept falling over the legs. It was rapidly disposed of in favour of a plastic Ikea cheapie.

5month · 20/06/2024 13:38

Plenty of outfits for 0-3 and now sleepsuits for bigger sizes as I want him in outfits now! Pramsuit we had loads as gifts and I used blankets instead as the were easier to remove when we went inside for a coffee or to a shop.

I love the electric nail file! Baby gets a bi-daily manicure 🤣

A sleepsuit with buttons up the back

Purplerain1144 · 20/06/2024 13:40

A mobile over the cot. Used it once 🤣 then it came down as she just grabbed it rather than sleeping!

Wingingitmum11 · 20/06/2024 13:49

God yes 0-3 was a waste.

my 3-6 also slightly wasted as the sun didn't come out in the uk!!!! which I should have expected!

I had heard mobiles were distraction and thankfully avoided - they do look super cute though!

buttons at the back are the devils work. Clearly designer with no kids!

Mine is something most people would find essential - a cot. We went for a rather expensive John Lewis one too😆 he never slept in it. I did try, but not a fan of controlled crying and never got on with sleep training. We co-slept and still do now he's a toddler! Hopefully the cot will get used with the next one😬

Squasher · 20/06/2024 13:57

Electric swing seat.

Really expensive, massive trip hazard and both of mine hated the thing. The cat got more use out of it.

SouthLondonMum22 · 20/06/2024 14:00

A sling. He just screamed in it, haven’t even bothered with them for my twins.

Muslins. Apparently I don’t produce sicky babies, I certainly didn’t need thousands of them and again, didn’t bother getting any with my twins.

Reugny · 20/06/2024 14:00

Bag clips for the buggy. Simply never used them.

I had an electric swing seat but I never put batteries in it and she was fine with it not swinging.

nextdoornightmares · 20/06/2024 14:00

Loads of fancy reusable nappies and liners etc. When I had twins and ADHD and can't keep on top of the washing as it is 😂 Didn't use them for the 3rd baby either and won't be using them for the 4th when they arrive!

This
And a baby bath - never used it
To be fair, baby bath was passed on from DSis who never used it either

So much baby stuff that one of my cats loved. The bean bag seat my twins hated but middle cat still loves. Any visiting baby hated the bean bag seat so it got donated to our cats in the end

Sunnysummer24 · 20/06/2024 14:07

DD1 a cot. DD2 a new matress for said cot.

Sharontheodopolodous · 20/06/2024 14:09

Not me,but my ds and his dp

They are having their first baby and have bought an all singing, all dancing baby monitor

They live in a one bed flat

Ds-'we'll need it mum, babies are not loud and we need to be able to hear her if she cries'

OK son...

Wingingitmum11 · 20/06/2024 14:10

Ah I love our baby bath but the we have a huge normal bath (to big to fill for tiny baby) and the sink isn't a suitable size!

Also baby was never really sick but I use muslins a lot , flannels , wiping mouth from milk etc! I always have about 5 hanging around the bed and various other places for easy access haha!!

@Sharontheodopolodous my mum doesn't get the monitor either . She said I need to stop obsessing over it haha!

A 0-3 month raincoat. Like WTF was I thinking? The baby would just be out in the rain? And not under a pram cover, or you know, INDOORS 🤣

permanently · 20/06/2024 14:14

Going back a bit here, but I had a contraption that you put dirty nappies in, twisted it at the top and it put the nappy into a sweet smelling bag. Are they still a thing?

Cellotapedispenser · 20/06/2024 14:14

A weird nappy bin that twisted the nappies into little poo like formations. Far better to use a small bin with nappy sacks and empty twice a day.

Yy to PP bought a stupid complex high chair but after the 10th time trying to scrub dried potatoes out of the crevices just got the ikea one and hosed it down outside each time.

Toys, generally. Pots and pans and spoons work just as well and at least have another use.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 20/06/2024 14:16

For #1 an aesthetic all white and cream baby gym. Obviously he hated it and I quickly lost the battle against tacky baby stuff,

For DD I just got an all singing, all dancing Finding Nemo one and she LOVED it. She'd happily lie on there for ages cooing and noodling around.

PurpleWhiteGreen123 · 20/06/2024 14:20

Top and tail bath.

Nappy bin.

Braveheart35 · 20/06/2024 14:25

A contraption to warm baby bum wipes 😳

Sprogonthetyne · 20/06/2024 14:28

Reusable nappies, nice in theory but always leaked and needed changing so much more. They did get pulled out again for DC2 during covid, when we were all in the house and avoiding shops, but if it takes a global pandemic to make you use something, it probably wasn't essential (much like the bread maker).

Cot also got very little use, coslept from 6 months with no1 & from birth with no2

Coats up to about a year. They were either in the car seat so had to take coat off, in the sling so under my coat or in the pram with blankets.

Thewildthingsarewithme · 20/06/2024 14:30

@TheEnglishSystemSucks this made me laugh 😂
