What was your daftest baby purchase?!

currently packing away expensive outfits my baby has never worn or worn once .... thinking wow was a waste .

it got me reflecting on what others have wasted money on before your baby?!

my worst item was an electric nail file that everyone raved about?!!! It barely made a dent to my babies nails. Immediately had to buy traditional clippers.

Fresco Bloom high which was over £300, it looked lovely but could never get it properly clean. Next baby had an IKEA one

Topseyt123 · 20/06/2024 18:55

A sling.

I wasn't one for wearing my babies and neither they nor I liked it. Tried it once with DD1 and abandoned it. It had gone to the charity shop by time DD2 was born.

I don't have good balance so would always have worried about falling on my baby if I wore a sling. I've no idea what I was thinking when I bought one. The buggy was so much better.

Other people bought outfits 0-3 which weren't used. I'm not putting a newborn baby in a cord jacket or shoes.

😂😂

Next2Me crib as both DC hated it.

Nursing tops as breastfeeding was a disaster and it was lockdown.

Nappy bin is a godsend for us as we don’t get wheelie bins here!

PuttingDownRoots · 20/06/2024 19:20

DH went a bit mad and bought 6mo DD an electric ride on Thomas the Tank Engine, complete with tracks, for her first Christmas. Over both DDs, I reckon it was used maybe 15 times. We sold it for £30.

She looked very confused when riding it on Christmas Day, dressed in the elf costume that was in her stocking.

I might dig out that photo since she's just turning 13....

A brand new Silver Cross coach built pram, it was a thing of beauty but only really used it in the garden, it couldn't be used used for shopping on your own as you couldn't take it into the shop, plus was a pain to get in and out of the car.

Gettingannoyednow · 20/06/2024 21:50

Running pram hahahahahaaaa what the fuck was I thinking?

Fancy padded high chair. Baby didn't particularly like it.

Lokshen · 20/06/2024 21:50

Slings. I don't want a baby on me 24-7.

A weird nappy bin that twisted the nappies into little poo like formations. Far better to use a small bin with nappy sacks and empty twice a day.

Yy to PP bought a stupid complex high chair but after the 10th time trying to scrub dried potatoes out of the crevices just got the ikea one and hosed it down outside each time.

Toys, generally. Pots and pans and spoons work just as well and at least have another use.

I actually laughed out loud at this. I had that nappy bin I think and the bags came in these weird cartridges so it was a palaver changing the bags. Got rid eventually.
Didn't bother with my 2nd I just have bins everywhere and in my darkest days early post partum with my 2nd when my first was still in nappies I just had a bin bag in one corner of my room. That I would launch wrapped up nappies at basket ball style in the middle of the night. And I'm not ashamed.

The cheapest travel system pushchair/ car seat as it was all I could afford, it was massive, heavy and clunky, hated using it. I wish I'd spent more on something more lightweight.

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 20/06/2024 22:24

Bag clip for pram.

Baby carrier (DD hated it)

Baby bouncer (hangs from doorway. Both kids hated it)

And this bloody weird contraption which you put in your bath which essentially cuts the bath size in half so you only have to fill 'half' a bath for baby. You can sit on the dry side or pop a towel in it or whatever. Didn't work well. Didn't use it.

Fudgetheparrot · 20/06/2024 23:35

Lovely padded high chair here too! Also so many people gave us blankets but we only really used one in the pram so had no need to have like 8 of them

I actually love the weird snake nappy bin but admittedly I do make DH change it lol

NotSentFromIphone · 21/06/2024 00:00

Oh wow, I remember those from 30 years ago. When you emptied it, it looked like a giant nappy filled caterpillar 🫣

Mim8 · 17/10/2024 09:36

My DD hated her bouncer. We used it to place her clothes and nappies on for the day.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 17/10/2024 09:52

Normal sleeping bags in 0-6 months. DD preferred the Love to Dream swaddle ones and then we had the transition ones with zip off arms so never used the normal sleeping bags.

Breast pump and milk storage bottles when DD wouldn’t latch. Only used it for a few weeks before switching to formula.

Coats before about 1. Used blankets and then the footmuff as they were easier to take off if I went indoors while DD was sleeping.

Car seat base. It didn’t work in our car due to the slope of the seats but found out too late to return it.

Several slings and baby carriers. Never got the hang of them.

Ikilledtheorchidagain · 17/10/2024 09:59

@Babyboomtastic that made me laugh.
@TheEnglishSystemSucks raincoat 🤣

I had a mylene class sling. It was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen but I still bought it. Looked lovely but could not for the life of me get it to work. Daughter hated it, screamed.

Expensive reusable nappies. A baby gro with buttons down the back. I bought newborn outfits as well. Off my nut I was.

Mylene Klass not class, doh.

california22 · 17/10/2024 10:07

Oh god the beaba food maker... what a waste of money 🙄😅

Muthauckas · 17/10/2024 10:08

I can already see I'm in the minority but the Ikea highchair.
It was great to clean but too bulky and constantly in the way! We only had a small dining area and not being able to fold it up was a right pain. Bought a fold up one for DS2.

Totally agree with blankets - I made DH stop at Mothercare on the way to the hospital while I was in labour so he could run in and buy more, because I was worried the 3 we already had weren't enough 🙈. Never used them, but to DH's credit he didn't question it and he's never mentioned it.

Socks. They never ever stayed on.

3-6 month clothes. Everybody bought us that size - even with a new babygro everyday there is no way we could have used them all. Same with hats.

I actually also loved the nappy snake bin, but I did all nappy changes in our upstairs bathroom. It was too much faff to carry dirty nappies downstairs with the baby! I did empty it daily though.

Gotosleep91 · 17/10/2024 14:45

Her cot apparently - 11 months in and she's never slept more than an hour in it at night 🙄

Blingismything · 19/10/2024 18:09

A coach built Silver Cross pram. Looked beautiful but not car friendly. Only used it a few times in the village we were living in, it was admired by many.

Raveonette · 19/10/2024 18:26

Only the bottles and steriliser I was persuaded to buy "just in case". I breastfed until they self weaned so they only ever used one bottle, when they were a bit older, at the childminder's.
