Bleeding nappy rash - help!

OtterMummy2024 · 12/06/2024 15:26

My 5.5 week old has had nappy rash since she was a week old. We have tried

Sudocream
Yellow metanium
Nystatin (oral)
Vaseline
Fucidin cream with vaseline on top - currently there days in

We don't use wipes, only warm water and cotton wool. I've given up orange juice because that seemed to upset her tummy.

We are coming up on our fourth visit to the GP with this next week. I would love to see her nappy rash improving because it looks so sore, and as it occasionally bleeds, the GP says she is at risk of an infection (hence the antibiotic cream as a precaution).

I know no nappy time helps, but she's so small she screams when she's undressed and also wees and poos a LOT. We manage 30 mins a day without a nappy on a puppy pad (and heating on). Any tips on other ways to manage no nappy time? Or other nappy rash treatments?

Try Bepanthen. It was amazing for DS.

WeirdPookah · 12/06/2024 20:46

Try cleaning with cooled, strong brewed chamomile tea on cotton wool.

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 12/06/2024 20:57

Did you by persevere with the metanium? It worked sooo brilliant with my son who used to get terrible terrible nappy rash. You need to put it on very thinly so you can still see the skin through the cream, it's a very thin barrier but it was amazing.
And can you leave baby for a while lying on a towel maybe without a nappy to get some air to the area?

We had this at about a similar age, it turns out baby had food allergies causing the issue. The only thing that worked was Vaseline and “natural nappies”, we tried everything. We use eco by naty nappies, a couple of weeks ago we ran out and used a small pack of pampers and had a big flair up, so other than the food allergies he seemed to react to something in the (perhaps the plastic) disposable nappies - not sure if you have considered this as without changing nappies to the eco ones we would never have cleared the nappy rash.

QforCucumber · 12/06/2024 21:18

Mine had this too at a similar age: it was red raw and so weepy!
it took weeks but we realised he was allergic to the actual nappies! They were Huggies ones.

switched to Tesco and all became well literally within 48 hours.

ifellintoarabbithole · 12/06/2024 21:29

It might be worth asking the GP to consider an antifungal. My eldest used to get dreadful nappy rash, sometimes bleeding and a short blitz of antifungal usually did the trick.

Sosocold · 12/06/2024 21:29

As others have said I'd assume baby is allergic to something such as food you are having (if breastfeeding), or formula, or nappies...

ifellintoarabbithole · 12/06/2024 21:30

^Antifungal cream, that is.

Overthebow · 12/06/2024 21:43

Up the no nappy time to a couple of hours a day. Spread a big towel out in her play mat, the floor, her crib, your lap, where ever she is lying.

Could it be a dairy allergy? Have you tried changing nappy type, maybe she is allergic to the nappies. Another thing could be the cotton wool aggregating it.

SauronsArsehole · 12/06/2024 21:49

Change the nappies. The gel crystals and absorbent products in some brands can cause nasty reactions and they soak up a lot of liquid that then just sits in the same area.

I have it with some sanitary towels myself because of the absorbent stuff they put in them and switched to cloth pads for when I need them. It’s all sorted.

change the nappies. Up the nappy free time and make sure you’re putting barrier creams on clean and dry skin too.

stillgoing25 · 12/06/2024 22:04

Ask the dr for some steroid cream- that was only thing that helped us, we also tried all the above.

I also gave up dairy at same time (suspected cmpa).

We were same in that baby was pooping small amounts constantly.

We found changing too much was potentially making it worse.

Used steroid cream from dr and lathered on sudocrem after a change and waited until decent amount of poo to change.

I'd been changing pretty much every 20 mins (every little poo!) before that to stop the rash but realised it was making it worse.

We also found eco by naty nappies and water wipes best. If I so much as use any other wipes he breaks out again in a rash.

Sunshineclouds11 · 12/06/2024 22:08

Agree with changing nappies and more air time.

What are her poo's like?

Sprinkles211 · 12/06/2024 22:12

My two youngest were this way they both needed hypoallergenic Nappies most eco brands are safe. We use kit and kin they aren't cheap but both bums cleared up within a week.

RandomMess · 12/06/2024 22:14

Sprilon spray designed for bedsores is amazing when all else fails plus you spray it on rather than having to touch a very sore bum.

Superscientist · 13/06/2024 10:18

Cmpa and other allergies caused my daughter to have awful nappy rash. She was worse in disposable nappies and better in cloth nappies

We also used Bepanthen , recommended

gamerchick · 13/06/2024 10:31

Have you changed the nappies? My youngest was horribly allergic to pampers. Asda wasn't much better. Aldi nappies worked the best in the end.

liquoricecravings · 13/06/2024 10:42

Try kit and kin nappies. Give more air time at home. Give a little bath and leave wrapped in a towel for a while having a cuddle or do some skin to skin and wrap a muslin or hand towel loosely around the waist to catch any accidents. Your dd won't get cold then. I have used reusable nappies with both my dc and they're great. I use cheeky wipes too - essentially little flannels you put water on for wiping. Lots of nappies have so many synthetic products in them it might be that something is irritating the skin.

Yes we are the same. Bloody eco naty and water wipes only!

When he potty trains and finishes nursery I won’t tell anyone how rich I am but there will be signs 🤣

Two weeks, every change. The GP told us to stop because he thinks it might be irritating her. That was after we'd done four days of sudo cream at every change on the advice of the midwife.

I thought it was thrush, so I had fluconazole and the baby had oral Nystan - but we had no improvement from that. I'm at my wit's end, honestly, and just feel so sorry for her.

Yes, try Bepanthen. I even used Bepanthen on my nipples because it was so much better than actual nipple cream. Healed them instantly.

feistymama75 · 13/06/2024 19:48

My son had this multiple times as a baby after each set of immunisations. Drapolene and antifungal cream cleared it every time.

I saw the price in Boots today, bloody hell! I'm going to see if extra long no nappy time will do it, as lots of you have recommended. And switch up hypoallergenic nappies of no improvement by Monday.
