Playing with poo?

I am fast running out of patience with this.
DS did this for a while around one year old then stopped, he is now almost 2.5.

Recently he has been reaching into his nappy at night and playing with it. He made the transition from cot to bed pretty well but when he gets up and has a dirty nappy he starts to play with it. The worst occasion was when he had smeared it across the walls and all over lots of toys.

I hope I am not alone with this, it is becoming a nightmare to have to clean his sheets and toys everytime he does it, let alone the rest!

Do you have any advice on what we can do?

We have tried potty training but he doesn't grasp it, and I am loathe to try while he is behaving like this.

I've tried that, poppered sleepsuits and dungarees even but he already knows how to undress himself.

I am wondering if he is doing it for attention as DD 1.5 is just starting to walk and talk.

Sleepycat, he knows it is bad, but when I discover him asleep at 3am with poo all over his bed it's hard to reason with him as I bath him and change him.
I am starting to get really angry with it, but I have managed not to shout so far

Aw, it's grim.

No useful advice I am afraid, was going to suggest dungarees/sleepsuit.

Have you tried putting them on back-to-front, so that the fastenings are not easily reachable

SheHadTwoMouthsForEyes · 07/04/2008 17:23

Grim isn't the word for it. There's nothing in the baby books about scrubbing beds, floors and every single toy in the room because they all have a smearing of poo.
Am I alone in this? I am really hoping someone will say they have gone through the same thing.

Bumping for the evening crew

My dd1 did this several times, over her whole bedroom and herself. She was also about the age of two - two and a half. In absolute despair I put her under a cold (ok, not that cold) shower, and she never did it again.

belgo · 07/04/2008 17:50

I put her under the shower because she she had caked herself in poo, just to clarify that.

SheHadTwoMouthsForEyes · 07/04/2008 17:52

Belgo thank fook I'm not alone. The swift and angry (from me) bath has seemed to upset him quite a lot, just hasn't stopped it.

I daren't post! DT2 was a poo smearer/player bleurrrgggghhhhhh!!!!!!!! It went on until he was about 3.5yrs.

Hope it doesn't last as long for you.

belgo · 07/04/2008 17:55

I also couldn't reason with my dd1. In fact she's now four years old and she's still difficult to reason with.

The thing that really got me were the bits of poo that you could smell just not see, no matter how well just cleaned the room.

belgo · 07/04/2008 17:57

I was convinced at the time it was down to some sort of deep down psychological problem, but now I realise she just found it fun .

SheHadTwoMouthsForEyes · 07/04/2008 17:58

Marslady, don't say it!

The worst was when he smeared it all over a wooden letter and number abacus my friend bought for him. I cleaned it but it still stank and the wood split so we ended up forking out 326 for a new one.

326 pounds?

SheHadTwoMouthsForEyes · 07/04/2008 17:59

belgo I just want to hug you after 'poo you can't see but can smell'
The whole room reeks no matter how much I clean it.

£26 lol

Another though is: maybe you could start potty training? That might help, depending on how ready he is.

TsarChasm · 07/04/2008 18:08

My dt's went through a (mercifully short) phase of this. It was awful.

This might sound a bit odd but it works. Put the nappy on at night then a nice big strip of duct tape right round it like you're wrapping him up for a DHL delivery.

MarsLady · 07/04/2008 18:08

Don't give her false hope belgo. DT2 the wee darling darling darling boy... was in his element with potty training. He'd wee in the potty and poo behind the sofa then smear the poo on the french windows, the back of the sofa, on the plugs..... I should stop shouldn't I?

TsarChasm · 07/04/2008 18:10

Oh meant to say, make sure you finish up with the end of the tape at the back.

MarsLady · 07/04/2008 18:14

Tsar... you clearly never met my wee weapons of mass destruction! Sigh.....

belgo · 07/04/2008 18:14

Marslady - it sounds like we got off relatively lightly then!

It's just something some children do. It would never even occur to dd2 to do it.

belgo · 07/04/2008 18:15

Not sure if duct tape would have stopped my dd1, she was an incredible escape artist It's worth a try though!

MarsLady · 07/04/2008 18:17

belgo I have 5 and DT2 was the only poo smearer. I hadn't a clue what to do about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
