Who buys the spare carseat?

Just curious really. If your child's grandparent regularly provide childcare, did they buy a carseat for their car or did you buy it?

My parents would probably offer, but I would insist on paying.

Icanwalkintheroom · 08/06/2024 09:25

Your child, you need to pay. Grandparents are doing a big favour helping out with childcare, it shouldn’t cost them anything.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 08/06/2024 09:26

You should buy it, for your child. If they offer than that's up to them and you can choose whether to take them up on it. You certainly can't expect them to.

We bought it.

My DP's offered us free childcare, which was hugely appreciated. I supplied all nappies/wipes/car seat etc. They insisted on buying food for my DC on their weekly shop that she would eat at their house so I'd have one less thing to worry about, so I'd transfer some money over every month to cover that too.

I didn't expect them to be out of pocket for doing me a favour, not when they were saving me a fortune.

circular2478 · 08/06/2024 09:27

I would provide as the parent of the baby. I'm quite particular though so I'd want to chose the model and my parents as lovely as they are would pick the cheapest model.

BoxFoxSocks · 08/06/2024 09:28

We bought it. If anything it helped to ensure they actually had a new and age appropriate car seat, rather than some random mystery seat given to them by a friend for free or whatever booster seat from the 90s they could dig out of the garage that "was fine when you were kids".

Growlybear83 · 08/06/2024 09:29

When my daughter spent time with my mum when she was little, I just put my car seat in my mum's car and it didn't occur to me to buy a second seat. But if we had felt another seat was needed, it wouldn't have occurred to me to expect my mum to buy it.

This. Unless they're using it to transport many different children (other grandchildren of the same age)? Why should they spend their money moving your child about?

123deepbreath · 08/06/2024 09:31

I offered but my mom insisted on buying an axkid move, she uses it for my little one and my nice and will use it for the LO2 as well, at the moment she has my infant seat as needed for LO2.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 08/06/2024 09:31

I did - I wanted to ensure they had one I approved of so I paid for it - plus they do so much extra for us. So more than happy to.

My step sister got upset and her dad when he bought a second hand car seat for her son as she didn’t get to approve it and was basically told that Pivot but a car seat for her DD in order to approve it…

Ragwort · 08/06/2024 09:34

Of course the parent should pay for it .. I can't believe anyone would quibble over the cost of a safety item. Many DGPs might offer to pay for it, but in no way should it be expected.

mitogoshi · 08/06/2024 09:45

At proper car seat stage we swopped ours in as it wasn't that often. They had booster seats for them once older as our high backed boosters didn't fit in my parents car due to moulding on it, so just the cushion type (the car had adjustable height seat belts that fit them really well, but I'm going back 15 years now, many parents didn't bother with boosters as the law changed around then to require it and they refused!)

MumChp · 08/06/2024 09:48

We did.

Houseplanter · 08/06/2024 09:48

Grandma here... me! If my grandchildren are coming with me in my car I'm going to keep them safe.

Likewise when they visit me I have what they need.. a highchair (basic) food, wipes. Some spare nappies etc.

Ereyraa · 08/06/2024 09:49

We did. Surely no one would expect the DGP to pay? Different if they offer.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 08/06/2024 09:52

I guess it comes down to money
We as grandparents always bought our own child car seats. We know we can afford it as do our kids, We did not couslt them or anything just bought what we felt were safe car seats and then told them, they were happy with that

If we had asked them, I'm sure they would have given us the money

Again, often it comes down to money ie if you can easily afford it or not, I guess

sarahc336 · 08/06/2024 10:00

You should in my opinion op, it's for your child to be safe they're simply offering the childcare which in itself is a massive help they're doing. A lot of people don't get that level of help so I'd be inclined to fork out 😁

crayfishyum · 08/06/2024 10:03

i honestly can’t believe you’re even asking the question

and bodes terribly for the future in terms of you using them for childcare

You are the parent. You.

SunriseSunsets · 08/06/2024 10:05

Wow

LivelyTraybake · 08/06/2024 10:09

I’ve put my parents.
What actually happened was, I bought it took it round, she looked up how much it cost, put the money in my bank account and refused to have it back.

Yes mine did buy a spare for their car, not a first stage baby one because they're easier to move so just used ours, but once they moved up to the next stage.
I knew they didn't mind and could afford it, otherwise I would have bought one for them.

DelilahJane · 08/06/2024 10:30

They bought it without telling me. I offered to pay, they said don't be daft.

Bringthejury1 · 08/06/2024 10:31

We bought the spare for grandparents to use. If we want them to kindly offer to take the kids out, then I'm happy to foot the bill to facilitate that. Saying that, I could also afford it.

cfdaaeffssfg · 08/06/2024 12:43

My parents told me they wanted to buy one and asked me to research and order one for them. I offered to pay but they insisted. I ordered them an Axkid Minikid 2 as it will be used for any grandchild that needs it so the automatic headrest will be handy.

Pemyu · 08/06/2024 12:54

We bought it.

That is definitely the dynamic though - we pay for almost all meals and days out, we host nearly all family meals.
