Hot dog on nursery menu

Am I being unreasonable for thinking that hot dogs shouldn’t be on my DS’s nursery menu?

DS is 25 months and has been in nursery since he was 18 months. Recently, he has moved up into the toddler room where one day on their menu timetable they serve hot dogs - whole and in a bun.

From my knowledge appropriate food for toddlers and going down a Google rabbit hole, children should not be given hot dogs until 4 years old minimum due to them being such a choking hazard. Or, if they have them they should be cut lengthways and never given whole or cut into eg. £1 size pieces Therefore I am confused and alarmed to see whole hot dogs on my 2 year old’s menu.

Would anyone else have a problem with this? I don’t want to be “that mum” who says DS can’t have them if this a common item on nursery menus.

They shouldn’t be cut into £1 pieces as it’s the round shape that’s the issue, they should be cut lengthwise. Ask how they serve them?

I would remove my child from this nursery and I'm not joking. It is inconceivable that people who care for children as their profession don't know how dangerous hotdogs are for small children. I would have no confidence whatsoever in their judgement.

Jeezitneverends · 16/05/2024 13:36

Never mind the choking hazard, they’re made from the sweepings off the factory floor-I’d have as much of an issue about them feeding my child utter garbage!

Absolutely YANBU! And the fact that hot dogs are pure processed meat and extremely unhealthy, why would that be on a nursery menu?! We live in Germany where sausages, deli meats and salami are a staple part of the diet however nurseries do not serve any of those to young children. Most parents are happy with their children eating them at home but I've never seen them in nurseries before.

You should at least request them to cut the hot dogs before serving. I would also question their food budget usage as hot dogs are probably the cheapest things to buy and has no nutritional qualities to speak of.

SabreIsMyFave · 16/05/2024 13:40

That's awful! They may as well have pot noodles on there!

ZestofCoffee · 16/05/2024 13:41

I agree re them being crap too. My sons after school club serves them. It’s total garbage. Makes me cringe.

Katherina198819 · 16/05/2024 13:41

It's not a choking hazard (at least not for a 25 months old) but it shouldn't be on a nursery menu!
You pay a lot of money for your child to be there, and this kind of processed food is unacceptable; it has 0 nutritional value. I guess the bun will also be super processed instead of freshly made.
I would definitely complain!

FleursDeFilles · 16/05/2024 13:41

YANBU.

Two reasons I chose YANBU:

  1. choking hazard
  2. hotdogs are ultra processed and not the sort of food growing toddlers need!

Agreed. Hotdogs are total rubbish.

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/05/2024 13:42

They are on our school lunch menu. I've never given it a second thought.

Of course it's a choking hazard.

Cantgetausername87 · 16/05/2024 13:45

I think you'd need to check with the nursery first. They may not be 'hot dogs'as in super processed, and may well be served in an appropriate way. Only way you'll know for sure is to ask them

I'm sure they won't give them a whole piece of meat and bun like you would for an adult. It's not a chocking hazard if it's cut. Babies and toddlers eat hot dog meat and bread all the time.

CuteCillian · 16/05/2024 14:01

In fairness they could be uncured chicken or turkey hot dogs which are usually lower in saturated fat and minimally processed, and, if sliced longways, are not terrible for toddlers to eat occasionally.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/05/2024 14:02

Clarify what they mean. A lit of people use hot dog to describe any sausage in a bun

Do you eat ham?

unless you’re buying deli ham carved from the bone in front of you that’s how all packaged ham is made.

Hotdogs are absolutely a choking hazard for two year olds.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/05/2024 14:08

He's 2yrs not 25 months

catchthebeat · 16/05/2024 14:09

Hiw do you know they're not cut lengthways?

LongLostSock · 16/05/2024 14:10

I'd double check what sausage it is. Dc are having 'hotdogs' at school today but it's just normal sausge in a bun.

JuiceBoxJuggler · 16/05/2024 14:13

Ask the nursery...

This. What a ridiculous overreaction. Presumably the nursery serves bread in the form of sandwiches. And no doubt the op wouldn’t bat an eyelid at bangers and mash or toad in the hole with other shite processed pork. But how dare they have the gall to serve the same in the form of hotdogs 😂 pure snobbish comments 😂

InTheRainOnATrain · 16/05/2024 14:23

Well yes they are choking hazards to under 5s but are you sure? Like it’s not the menu just saying ‘hot dogs’ and your 2YO says they come whole but is not aware they’ve been cut lengthways? Definitely talk to them but unless you’ve seem them yourself I wouldn’t make assumptions that’s definitely how they’re being served. Separately though that’s shit nursery food. I don’t have an issue with them (cut obviously!) at the occasional barbecue but would expect nursery to be serving healthy food than that.

I really hate to be that person, but I buy gammon and cook and carve it myself ….

Correction: sweepings plus salt.

They are very salty garbage.
