My son was up till about 3 o clock just not settling , constantly trying to get his sleeping bag off. I followed the grobag guide and as the room was 23 he was in a 1 tog and short sleeve vest but his arms felt freezing but his neck warm. Eventually the room went up to 24+ so changed him into a 0.5 as he was constantly trying to get his legs out. He kept waking after falling asleep wanting drink or BF.

but anyway he clearly didn’t like his legs covered , annoyingly our 2.5 tog opened at the bottom so you could let his feet breathe.

would it be possible for him to just Be in some baggy long pjs instead of a bag? I’m unsure of the tog equivalent etc.

then considered a blanket but wouldn’t he just kick it off?

shoukd I just try to persevere with the 0.5 as he’s gonna have many warm nights.

thanks in advance.

the room nearly hit 25 last night. Started at 23

Sorry for any spelling errors etc. very tired this morning. Once it got to around 3am he did go until 8:30 so know he can settle just was tough getting there, never seen him as ‘ crying’ on a night

At his age I'd just get some PJs, no bag.

Edit to say Sainsburys were always good for PJs when mine were small.

OrlandointheWilderness · 10/05/2024 11:10

I think if someone put me in a bag with 25 degrees at night I'd be miffed! It's been a while since mine was small, but I'd be doing pjs and a blanket personally.

We’ve just been using a sleep suit/pjs

Sleepysaurus2 · 10/05/2024 11:11

Yes of course you can put him down without a sleeping bag. Maybe he’d be more comfortable in long sleeved pyjamas and nothing else. He’ll wake if he’s cold and you can always pop him in a sleeping bag if he seems cold later in the night

ZipZapZoom · 10/05/2024 11:12

Ditch the sleeping bag. Just pyjamas should be absolutely fine in this heat.

Charlotteap · 10/05/2024 11:15

Thanks guys, sorry ftm and just been following the tog guides but thought the same when I’m hot id hate my feet confined. Would you just put him in nappy and long pjs?

Thanks again

Maybe you need to get a fan? Not directly at him but just to keep the air moving. I'd also just use a long sleeve top and bare legs if it's hot. Assuming you are in the UK, the bedrooms here were sweltering which seems mad as we had the heating on last week.

RoseBucket · 10/05/2024 11:17

Sleeping bags were never a thing when my daughter was a baby (they were just becoming popular) pjs and blanket were fine.

Charlotteap · 10/05/2024 11:20

I have tried him with a blanket for his naps but he kicks it off within 10 seconds! Thank you I did have a fan circulating but I turned it off when he finally settled, I will keep it on all night.

yes uk and recently had heating on also 😂 hate how warm our rooms get. It’s a new build we’ve not been in 2 years yet and also thought they’d be cooler!

I have actually got some nice quite loose footless next sleepsuits which might worth a try

OP posts:
JC89 · 10/05/2024 11:30

I expect your new build is very well insulated and designed to keep warm! Can you try keeping curtains closed during the day, windows too if the air outside is hotter than inside (so it doesn't get as hot), then in the evening/overnight/early morning open all the windows and internal doors to get as much cool air through as possible? Put the fan on the windowsill to get the cooler air in? This is probably overkill for now but it's likely to get hotter...

My little one is a few months older than yours and has never kept a blanket on. I just pop him in a sleeveless vest and he sleeps like a dream. Don't go by legs or arm temp, check his chest. My flat also was 24 last night🥵

Mishmashs · 10/05/2024 11:35

You can buy little pyjama shorts. I would just do pjs and a light blanket. Don’t worry too much - he’s not a newborn! You’re doing great.

Charlotteap · 10/05/2024 11:40

@JC89 thank you that makes sense! Will definitely try that today, remember the fan trick in our old sweltering house.

@Devilsmommy glad he’s not the only one, kicks it off straight away. And he ends up in every position in his cot don’t think the blanket would last either way aha. Thank you sleeveless vest on its own or a bag too?

@Mishmashs thank you , appreciate that

Welovecrumpets · 10/05/2024 11:42

I would just do a footless onesie so the pyjama top can’t ride up. H&M sell them cheap

DutchCowgirl · 10/05/2024 11:44

Do you have summer sleeping bags? They are cooler thinner material and no sleeves.
I used them without pj’s or blankets.

Devilsmommy · 10/05/2024 11:45

@Charlotteap sleeveless vest on its own. Mine went into a single bed at 10mo because he was too confined in his cot. Love a bloody good fidget before sleep 🤣🤣🤣

Caterina99 · 10/05/2024 11:48

I’d just put him in a regular sleep suit or pjs, no vest.

Or maybe a vest and a light blanket if he wants it? At 15 months I don’t think blankets are such an issue

It is a minefield knowing what’s best. Plus kids have their own internal thermostats too! My DD is always hot and kicks off all blankets (our house is freezing but it doesn’t seem to bother her at all) and my DS loves to be bundled up even in summer!

Charlotteap · 10/05/2024 12:01

@DutchCowgirl yes I have a 0.5 sleep bag which says 24-27 might be worth giving that another go without the vest.

@Devilsmommy i think my DS is showing signs as the last couple weeks he’s waking himself banging his head all over the cot. To be fair he does a little cry and goes back but sounds awful!

@Caterina99 thank you ! And I agree it is a minefield. And my son also seemed to want to be more snuggler than the guides said , so when it was 19 degrees and said 2.5 and suit my DS still was cold until I added a vest.

thanks everyone hoping for a better night and got a few different things I can try. Appreciate you all

Buy some of those clips that go under the mattress. He won’t be able to kick it off.

AutumnBride · 10/05/2024 13:20

DD wouldn't have any kind of blanket on from being able to move about, she'd just kick it off.

She was fine in a sleep suit, I just an eye on the room temperature.

If he's hot he wont want a blanket! I'd hate to be pegged under a blanket or into a sleeping bag. My bedroom was 26 last night. SE London terrace, well insulated, loft bedroom.

Superscientist · 10/05/2024 16:46

Long or short sleeve vest and leggings. If it gets warmer overnight whip the leggings off.
I large muslin can be good as a thin cover. I don't worry if it doesn't stay on and if it has been kicked off quickly I remove it. Personally I like to go to sleep with a cover but when it hot I often kick it off once a sleep.
