Am I the only one who DOESN'T fold baby clothes?

This may horrify some of you, but does anyone else NOT fold baby clothes? Our dd's chest of drawers are just full of jumbled outfits and clothes. We did fold at the beginning but we end up messing it all up anyway when getting stuff out of the drawers in a rush etc.

Precious time spent folding could actually be spent doing tidying elsewhere or spending more time with 1 year old dd. We work full time and we are tired! My mother came to stay and gasped when she saw the state of dd's clothing storage situation. Her bedroom is otherwise lovely and neat. But my mum was shocked at the clothes stuffed in each drawer! We are attentive and caring parents in my opinion so if this is one of our main flaws then so be it! This will have to change when dd gets a bit older, however. I fold my own clothes (most of the time...)

So, am I the only person who doesn't fold or neatly store baby clothes?

We had two big drawers for our daughters clothes when she was a baby, one drawer I organised where everything was just rammed in, the second my husband organised where everything was folded and organised into outfits.

shardlakem · 05/05/2024 20:49

I keep everything in labelled massive freezer bags - vests / trousers / t shirts etc. Not folded but everything is organised which makes grabbing stuff and putting stuff away much quicker and easier! And then when it's outgrown it's packed up ready to be put away already.

I mean I folded them in half sometimes? Does that count? But I certainly didn’t hang up or iron baby clothes. I don’t even do that to my own clothes or my DC clothes now (the horror!)

We had shelving in our nursery with baskets for various items, so one for tops, one for sleepsuits, one for trousers etc. It wasn’t hard to find what you needed within it and I never felt it was messy. DH would literally pull out what was on the top with no consideration whether it matched or not, but he’d do that however it was organised to be honest.

I folded or sorted in boxes fir the small stuff.

EricHebbornInItaly · 05/05/2024 21:06

I put everything on hangers on rail. I’m dyslexic (and suspect adhd) and if I can’t see it, I forget it exists.

it’s all all sections, trousers, tops etc so I can easily grab what I need.

My system is a dyslexic coping mechanism. Before I did this she would grow out of things before she even wore things, which was annoying because some days I’d think I only had dirty laundry but actually had a drawer full of clean clothes.

New system I can see when I’m running low and need to put on a load

@UnravellingTheWorld

Pls stop baby-ing your husband like this! He has to learn to dress his own child!

mentalbandwidth · 05/05/2024 21:19

I'm in the fold / roll / skubb box organisation camp with DD clothes strangely therapeutic for me and also get clothes out for next day - what horrifies my DM is that I don't iron them 🤦‍♀️

😂😂😂 At 44 he's not going to develop a fashion sense now! He doesn't notice if clothes don't match; I do. It's purely for my own sanity that I do it this way.

paristotokyo · 05/05/2024 21:37

Definitely folding over here, that would drive me nuts. I fold and place them in their categories so my pre-schooler has a stack of folded jumpers, trousers, shirts etc so much easier and quicker! I'd prefer to hang up though but we don't have the space in his room for a wardrobe so it's a chest of drawers in there.

DappledThings · 05/05/2024 21:41

Ironed and folded here

I've never folded clothing in my life unless it was going into storage, not even my own. I just hang it all up. It's what my family did growing up, I had no idea people folded clothes until I moved out!

If I were keeping clothes in drawers, I'd have to have different drawers for different clothes types at least.

I don't have enough wardrobe space to hang up all of my clothes.

I fold T-shirts and jumpers. I put DH's clean clothes on his side of the bed to deal with.

I can't imagine just screwing clothes up and leaving them in a jumble. That is the height of laziness. It doesn't take long to fold up a few babygros.

Dyra · 05/05/2024 21:52

I roll up socks together, fold jeans/trousers up, and hang my husband's t-shirts/shirts up. There's different drawers for different types of clothes. The laundry pile is sorted accordingly, then into the drawer they go. My mother is already disappointed in me in so many ways. What's one more?

Gazelda · 05/05/2024 21:55

The couple of seconds it takes to fold an item before storing it is probably roughly equal to the amount of time it takes to rummage amongst a pile of mixed and unfolded clothes to find the item you're looking for.

So it makes sense to me to fold when I have a few minutes after the clothes have been washed so that an item is easy to grab in the morning.

Plus clothes generally look better if ironed and/or folded.

Wow you learn something new every day. I had no idea so many people wouldn’t fold clothes! It wouldn’t occur to me not to and I couldn’t cope with the mess otherwise.

It’s not messy though, at least not for us. We use labelled plastic boxes so it’s easy for anyone dressing our toddler to get her ready.

I’m ruthlessly minimal though and don’t keep anything we don’t or won’t wear, especially when given hand me downs.

Most people have full to bursting clothes & airing cupboards, even if neatly folded and ironed. My mother is one of them. To me that is mess and I couldn’t stand it!

MariaVT65 · 06/05/2024 06:05

No folding baby clothes here. I also don’t iron anything or make beds.

I hang some of my own stuff up but wht does it matter when it’s going to get baby drool on it.

Borracha · 06/05/2024 06:10

I’m so confused, if you just lob them in, do they not come out all crumpled and creased?

I don’t iron baby clothes or arrange them to look like a shop display, but I fold them roughly and stack things by category eg little leggings in a pile, sleep suits in a pile etc.

WittiestUsernameEver · 05/05/2024 19:02

Wow. ... What a fucking waste of time....

Not a single person will be at your funeral going "wasn't it amazing how she always ironed tea towels??".

How do you know? It could be a talking point among friends, even a source of admiration!

Corinthiana · 06/05/2024 06:30

Whatever arrangement suits you is fine. I'm a very neat person and I think it does save time to have everything ordered and sorted, but it's your life, not your mum's!.

MidnightPatrol · 06/05/2024 06:36

UnravellingTheWorld · 05/05/2024 17:32

I do this too! Also if my husband goes to dress him then there is an outfit already matched for him, so the poor child doesn't end up wearing black, navy and brown at the same time 🤦‍♀️

Pleased to see I’m not the only one who objects to black, navy, brown combined.

MidnightPatrol · 06/05/2024 06:37

Does everything not look crumpled? This explains the appearance of most of the stuff I see on vinted.

I do fold baby clothes, so I can see what I have clearly! I don’t find folding clothes a time consuming job though, I usually do it in front of the TV in the evening.

SnapdragonToadflax · 06/05/2024 06:45

I roll and stuff into storage boxes. Rolling takes seconds and it's quite soothing when you get into a rhythm.

That said, in reality the clean clothes are often left in a basket on the sofa for a few days and grabbed out of there until I have time to actually put them away at the weekend.

They don't have many clothes so there's not much rummaging to be done. Everything is worn regularly so just cycles round - it doesn't seem to look particularly creased as the drawers aren't packed full I guess.

DiscoBeat · 06/05/2024 08:18

I used to iron and gold all the baby clothes. But then I ironed everything. Now I'm much more sensible and fold straight from the line or dryer so they don't get creased (except for shirts and formal trousers, etc).

lavenderlou · 06/05/2024 08:18

I am pretty crap and disorganised about household stuff but I fold clothes (including baby clothes) because they fit in the drawers better and it makes it easier to find things.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 06/05/2024 08:19

I don’t have children but I don’t even fold my own clothes so can’t see me folding baby clothes should the time ever come.
