When did your child jump both feet off ground ?

DS is 28mo and still not :( so obviously bit worried

he does a mini gallop I have seen and if he ‘jumps’ off something (like we say to jump off his balance beam onto his gym mat) he like does a quick step down doesn’t lift both feet and jump

should I be worried ?

My son is 3.5 and still absolutely sucks at this 😂 In football class he still gallops over the cones instead of doing a standing jump like the coaches ask.

Age nearly 4. Really a bit odd because he could ride a bike without stabilisers so I’ve no idea why jumping was tardy.

Not quite sure why it would be strange for a child of 2 and 1/2 to not be able to jump. It's perfectly normal to not be able to jump until after 3 and would have presumably not have stopped them being able to take part in a preschool ballet class.

It’s just never occurred to me that kids of that age couldn’t jump as every one I’ve known could. They definitely all can in the preschool ballet class (my dd is 3 and still in the class, they all jump fine). I’m starting to think it might just be my area as all the play parks have mini trampolines in which are toddler sized so all the toddlers go on them and can jump fine. Maybe trampolines are the way to go.

As you said OP it's screened for at the 2.5yr check but still, I wouldn't worry on its own. All kids develop differently. DC1 was jumping at about 26m and they've never been a particularly athletic child so it's not an indicator of that or anything. DC2 is 30 months and nowhere near jumping yet but he does have a few physical conditions so could be that he will never master it tbh.

DD was 2yrs 8months. At her 2.5yr HV check, the HV advised to give it 3 more months and if she still wasn't jumping, they would refer to OT / physio, to see if there was an underlying reason. As with all her developmental milestones, DD was just doing it at her own pace. So I think you have a bit of time before you need to worry yet. We also found going swimming / jumping off the side etc to be helpful in getting her to understand the mechanics involved.

My 2 and 3/4 year old still isn't doing it. I did start thinking "hmmm... isn't it time yet?" but HV saw him for something else last month and isn't concerned.

onwardsup4 · 23/04/2024 12:08

Mine is just 2 and doesn't jump yet not even on a trampoline holding on to the bar. I didn't think I needed to be concerned so I'm off to Google it now

Have you tried to teach him so he knows how and what his body is supposed to do?

Maybe get a hula hoop and make an assault course out of sofa cushions of things to climb over and under and a hoop to jump into.

Lottieloousx · 23/04/2024 12:26

@Singleandproud yeah we demonstrate a lot and I get kids music on YouTube (Danny go miss Rachel) we sing and when it’s a jump motion show him etc

he will kind of jump off the couch to me on floor (practise, I don’t sit on the floor regularly haha!£ but I notice he takes one foot off at a time not both so kid of leaps to me more than a jump

Try and gently physically manipulate him to show him. Make it exciting and tell him you are going to show him a trick. Hold his ankles, get him to bend his knees and push off and have someone else hold his hips and lift him. Do this several times until you don't have to support him. Some children need to build the muscle memory to do it.
Make it a competition so buy some lining paper from B&Q and draw a ruler on it and hold it against the wall and write down his result each time he jumps high so it's fun and then lay it on the floor and teach him to jump forward.
If he doesn't get the hang of it it's not the end of the world unless he wants to be an olympic long jumper

Around 2, but she's 26 months now and still doesn't do it every time, only when she's feeling especially bouncy
