Newborn noises, what's normal?

My little boy is 2 weeks old, he was born at 32 weeks and required 2 weeks in hospital

I didn't sleep at all last night ( our first night home ) I noticed he is SO noisy... he squeaks and he snorts and I find his nose really congested sounding.

Is this quite normal? I don't know what's normal and what isn't anymore, it's been a scary ride!

Mine was born at 32 weeks also and I remember being quite alarmed at all the noises too!

Keepsmiling2948 · 18/04/2024 11:17

All completely normal, mine was a few weeks early but even full term are noisy sleepers. I was a bit taken back at first too. It was like sleeping on a farmyard! It does just randomly stop one day. I don’t remember it tapering off either, he just stopped. You do get a bit more used to it though but I remember jumping up at every snort for a few weeks…

DD1 did this, I remember calling my Mum about it at 3 AM 😂 It only lasted a few weeks I think.

My 31 weeker sounded like a farm animal for the first few weeks we called him a little Billy goat lol 😆

Linti · 21/04/2024 13:39

I have had 4 little piggies and they make all sorts of sounds and squeaks. The best is when the giggle in their sleep when they learn to laugh. Good luck. X

Ellerby83 · 21/04/2024 13:40

It's normal. They do sound like piglets!

Sootyb · 21/04/2024 13:45

Yes completely normal, they are so noisy when they sleep, I couldn't sleep either, I had to get hubby to sleep in the room with bubs, and he came and woke me up when dd needed feeding

SiobhanSnow444 · 21/04/2024 13:48

Most Mum's don't sleep on the first night, they make all kinds of snuffly noises. If you are concerned though, seeing as he spent the two weeks in hospital then you could take baby along to see a health visitor (or other medical practitioner) just to put your mind at rest.

BaronessBomburst · 21/04/2024 13:49

They snort, grunt, gurgle, and fart.
Then they start sleeping through in silence and you'll panic and have to check that they'll still breathing.
Then as they get older they'll talk in their sleep and wake you up singing or yelling about Pokémon or Fortnite.
Nights will never be the same again! 😊

Mummyof2x2bg · 21/04/2024 14:22

If your concerned I would contact your gp esp as the bah wa sborn early. My daughter had noisy breathing it was a condition called laryngomalacia. Although as said here it is also normal for them to make noises and grunt. But if you feel it's more def get seen x

Mabelface · 21/04/2024 14:34

Prem babies can be noisy little pickles! Grunting, squeaking, farting etc. mine grew out of it after a couple of months.

Echobelly · 21/04/2024 14:36

My second had snuffly, raspy breathing for a bit as a newborn and I checked with the health visitor but they said it was in normal bounds, and it cleared up after a few weeks. Keep checking in if it goes on more than a few weeks but I expect it's fine.

I remember being shocked at the noises our tiny son made. The midwife came the day after and when I spoke to her about it she advised us to put him in his own room as we’d never get any sleep otherwise.

LenaLamont · 21/04/2024 14:39

Small woodland creatures - that's what newborn noises are like. Snufflings and snorts and gurgles, it's incredibly cute.

Hopefully that was a long time ago as the advice now is not to have young infants sleeping alone at all.

TheSnowyOwl · 21/04/2024 14:39

Yes babies do make a lot of noise but grunting can also be an early sign of sepsis. Given you are concerned, and even though the overwhelming likelihood is that everything is normal, I would get your baby checked out to be on the safe side.

Saschka · 21/04/2024 14:43

Totally normal. One of us sat up with him for the first couple of nights, worried he was choking or was going to stop breathing (he was premature and had been in SCBU). Then we realised he was totally fine and sleep through it.

SingingSands · 21/04/2024 14:58

If he's just home from hospital where he has no doubt been observed and monitored for two weeks then I'm sure he is absolutely fine and just making the usual newborn snuffles, grunts and squeaks. It's very cute but nobody tells you about it in advance!

Strokethefurrywall · 21/04/2024 15:01

My tiny baby did this so much he was nicknamed Grunt.
The first night I had him I had to leave him with the midwives outside my room because I couldn't sleep.
Apparently he joined another grunting baby girl and they grunted/farted at each other for 6 hours before they brought him back into me for a morning feed.

He's 10 now and still noisy when he sleeps!

Yes it was over 20 years ago. I wouldn’t blindly follow such advice now. Thankfully advice has changed now.

Umbongowasyuk · 21/04/2024 15:11

My 30 weeker was so grunty it's very normal x

TeeNoG · 21/04/2024 15:16

My son was born late and it was still like sleeping in a room with a small excitable grunting goat. From what I remember it only last a few weeks.

2mummies1baby · 21/04/2024 18:45

Totally normal! I was also shocked about how something so tiny could make so much bloody noise! Get yourself some earplugs!

Mumaway · 21/04/2024 18:50

Babies are sooo noisy in their sleep. Puffs, chuffs, snorts, grunts. We eventually gave up and moved our DD into her own room at 4 months as I was getting no sleep, as earplugs meant I slept through the important noises!

PennyPugwash · 21/04/2024 20:10

Premie twin mam here.
Yip... the noises are insane. Nothing prepares you! Completely normal.
Congratulations
