Newborn noises, what's normal?

My little boy is 2 weeks old, he was born at 32 weeks and required 2 weeks in hospital

I didn't sleep at all last night ( our first night home ) I noticed he is SO noisy... he squeaks and he snorts and I find his nose really congested sounding.

Is this quite normal? I don't know what's normal and what isn't anymore, it's been a scary ride!

Both of my DC were full term and I remember them making all sorts of noises in their sleep as newborns, particularly my first. I found the sound of him fidgeting and snuffling in the dark extremely unnerving. It used to wake me up and I would be so on edge listening to it. Second time round I knew it was normal and actually found it quite comforting to hear her next to me.

That said, there's no harm in mentioning your concerns to your midwife. They can set your mind at rest more than anyone on here.

My son sounded like a little dinosaur.

I remember this with my preemie although I’m not sure it’s exclusive to prem babies! A lot of grunting, groaning, snuffling noises that would convince me she was wide awake and in great discomfort but I would get up to look at her and she would seem perfectly content and settled! It was very tiring to listen to and definitely kept us awake. I read somewhere it’s to do with their immature respiratory systems. It seemed to just suddenly stop for us too.

Mine was full term but made all these noises, I struggled to sleep sometimes because he was so noisy.

Ours was a baby dinosaur for what seemed like ages. I didn't actually realise but she has stopped doing that and she now just gets noisy when she sucks her thumb more enthusiastically when she starts to get hungry. She's nearly 3 months and she was full term. So yes, perfectly normal!

Totally normal and so annoying they do it for ages!

OnHerSolidFoundations · 22/04/2024 08:13

Yes mine made little funny animal like noises when they were tiny.

My daughter was 5 weeks premature and we still call her Piglet. Sounded like she was permanently hunting for truffles before revving up a motorbike 😆 Only lasted a month or so.

Yes! 10 week old noise only recently stopped, my daughter did it too and stopped around same age. It’s crazy how noisy they are in their sleep!

My 31 weeker sounded like a farm animal for the first few weeks we called him a little Billy goat lol 😆

This has reassured me because mine makes an odd noise like that every now and again!
