Anyone else had/got 2nd or 9th percentile babies?

DD is 10 months and she's been between the 2nd and 9th percentile her whole life. I try not to worry but obviously do (especially as she's unwell right now and not really eating!).

Anyone else? Did they get bigger when they got older or stayed small?

My daughter was on the 9th percentile as a newborn moving up to the 35th percentile when I removed her allergies from my diet. She's 3.5 now and settled on the 25th percentile for weight

She was also on the 25th percentile for length until some time between 1 and 2 she dropped to the 1st percentile for height and stayed there.

I was always on the 2nd percentile now 5ft2 and slim build. My older sister was under the 0.4th percentile until 1, one the 0.4th percentile until 2 then moved up to the 50th percentile. She is now 5ft4 and slim build. My little sister was always pretty average as a baby and when I was 7 and she was 3 weeks shared clothes. She is now 5ft3 and slim build. All three of us can share clothes so our size as babies didn't influence our adult sizes that much!

My daughters paediatrician think she is going to end up a similar size to me as an adult so aren't concerned. My partner was the smallest in his year until puberty but is now 5ft11 and slim build so there is a chance she will be bigger.

By definition 2-9% of us will have babies that size 🥰. My little man dropped down to the 2nd centile with allergies. When last checked at 12 months he was nearly back up to the 9th centile. I think he's probably still there. He's bright as a button and giggles all day. Paediatrician said "nothing wrong with small". In your case even less to worry about as your baby has always been that size.

bigbadbarry · 25/03/2024 19:58

DD1 followed the 9th centile from birth. She’s now 20, 160cm and a size 6. So still tiny but perfectly healthy. This despite the HV who did not comprehend that 50% of the population by definition will be smaller than average and who tried to make me add butter and double cream to all her food 🙄

My son was on the 0.04 percentile. He is now still small (age 11) but has become stocky. He has a genetic condition

Shinyeyes · 25/03/2024 20:04

Hovered between 2nd and 9th till we ran out of red book. Now 168cm and a healthy and very fit size 10. She still has tiny, and very skinny feet and hands though!

DreadPirateRobots · 25/03/2024 20:04

Both of mine followed the 9th centile. Both of them are entirely healthy, smart, and developing normally. They're just smaller than average. The ninth percentile is a perfectly normal place to be.

Yogatoga1 · 25/03/2024 20:05

Mine was all over the place.

hovered somewhere just above the 9th, occasionally dropping down to near 0.4. Her chart looks like a series of steps rather than a nice line.

i eventually gave up weighing her as it was clear it was just her.

she’s a perfectly average 5’5 now at 16.

shams05 · 25/03/2024 20:08

My eldest was born on 2nd and is a very slim 20 year old now, stayed on 2nd with no health problems at all. Younger DD is now 8 years old, also born on 2nd for weight and height and that's where she has stayed. Again perfectly healthy and active. She did have cmpi when a baby but is now fine with all dairy after we worked through the milk ladder with the peadatrician.

Lemonademoney · 25/03/2024 20:11

I have small ones (and one big one). If they are healthy and growing to their line then try not to worry. I’m fairly petite and my husband was apparently a small and thin child… he’s just shy of 6ft now but didn’t have his growth spurt until nearly 15.

OslowinterDipper · 25/03/2024 20:14

My 9th percentile baby stayed petite is now a super fit teenager who competes at a national level in a niche sport. She’s definitely a pocket rocket very healthy that looks just like grandma petite and very strong.

Mazuslongtoenail · 25/03/2024 20:17

It bugs me that you get that the ‘oh little Jimmy is on the 95th centile’ bragging but then the ‘oh, he’s only on the 2nd centile. Is he eating enough, are you worried?’

Some children have to be on the 2nd or 9th, that’s how centiles works.

CrochetMadRosie · 25/03/2024 20:23

My DS was 4th percentile when born and always hovered around there. I think he made it up to 15th at one point, but went back down again.

At almost 18, he towers over me now at 5 ft 10, and although he's probably never going to be huge, he goes to the gym and enjoys working out.

Hope your DD feels better soon.

Pepperama · 25/03/2024 20:24

A steady 9th centiler here too. Now a teen and at times very annoyed that he’s always amongst the smallest. Some of his friends tower over him. Just the way of the world, neither parent is a giant so no reason to expect him to be tall and as people already said, 10% need to be in the bottom decile.

CatchingOfHappiness · 25/03/2024 20:27

My daughter is 11 months and has tracked 9th percentile since birth (and during pregnancy also). It wouldn’t even occur to me that this would be something to worry about. She’s healthy and happy and just following her own path to be a petite person. Both myself and my husband are on the shorter side so it makes sense that she is too.

clareykb · 25/03/2024 20:32

My twins were 2nd percentile for ages, the suddenly caught up a bit aged about 3 or 4 and are now nearly 11 and the tallest girls in y6 and in age 13 clothes. They are very skinny though but me and there dad are tall and slim (or I was until I had them!) So I think there is a genetic component in that.

AceofPentacles · 25/03/2024 20:33

DS was 9th percentile when born, recently went to GP at age 13 and is still 9th centile for weight but is about 5' 8 tall and still going. Built like a racing snake as they say

jamidojer · 25/03/2024 20:33

0.4th centiler, has tracked it almost perfectly for 9 years!

Offthepath · 25/03/2024 20:36

Born on the 3rd percentile. Wavered between 5th and 10th for the first year or so. Now much older and looks average in his class at school.

TerrazzoChips · 25/03/2024 20:37

My baby was born on the 75th centile (despite being told throughout pregnancy they’d be over 11lb) and dropped to between the 2nd and the 9th for weight while remaining between 75th and 90th for length which worried the HV. We were referred to Alder Hey but they’re just slim.

I was always a skinny child as was their father.

KatzP · 25/03/2024 20:38

Both mine were born below 2nd centile and gradually moved up to that level during first year. At 13 and 10 they are both still 2nd centile but in proportion weight and height wise. First was premature so monitored closely as so tiny but once it was clear she was naturally small it was less of an issue.

I never worried too much - DH is 2nd centile for men and whilst I’m probably 50th any children were always likely to be below average height.

StaySpicy · 25/03/2024 20:45

My DS was between 2nd-9th centiles from birth. Now 5, he's still on the small side (I just looked at the chart and he's STILL between the 2nd and 9th centiles!), especially compared to some of the very tall kids in his class! But he's not stand-out small, he's a similar size to many others.

His dad and I aren't particularly tall so he'll probably just be small his whole life. As I say to my 6' niece - "someone has to be small or you wouldn't be tall!"

SpringOfContentment · 25/03/2024 20:45

DS1 was born on 25th, but quickly dropped to 9th, and has hovered round there.
He eats like a horse, is healthy, fit, active, and about to sit GCSE's. And it's impossible to buy trousers that fit!

JanewaysBun · 25/03/2024 20:47

DS always sat under the second centile. He's 6 and eats loads but is still very skinny

Magnolia18 · 25/03/2024 20:55

My eldest DD was in the 9th percentile. She was perfectly healthy and happy. She is now 7 and is a little petite next to her peers at school. Her sisters were in the 50th percentile and are aged 5 and 4 now and are both petite next to the other children. They are all healthy, happy, confident fit, excelling at all subjects at school😊

pickledparsnip · 25/03/2024 20:55

My 9th percentile baby is now 14 and 5'8". He was small til about 8ish, then he started to fill out. Now he's shaving!
