Practical outfit ideas for 8 month baby please!

Since my DD was born, I have dressed her in those zip suits. I quickly realised I preferred something practical over an ‘outfit’ which is fiddly, as i wanted something for easy change (if spit up milk) and simply move zip up to change nappy. And my DD has been one to fill nappies frequently since day 1.

I’m thinking it might be time (and this is just based on me observing other parents and feeling lazy!) to move to more of an ‘outfit’ now - are there any suggestions for practical ideas for quick changes?

Thanks everyone! I’ve already bought some bits already for legging/top/vest combo. As we go into warmer weather definitely going to try dresses.

Shorts is a great idea @Coffeeismyfriend1

I’m guessing long socks are good for nursery so they don’t get pulled off?! @BlueScrunchies

@Potatomashed yes you get it! Bonds make it so easy. My DH I think would be happy to use them until DD is 1 yr old, he doesn’t the point of moving to outfits but I said we need to at some point! 😂

For those that use tights, are they not a pain to pull on?

I had DS1 in sleepsuits until he was 1 year old and DD2 until she was 10months. For outfits, I prefer clothing without buttons and no hoodies. Leggings/joggers and tops with no zips or buttons or anything like.

I love a coord, next do really cute ones and also the vest and dungarees is always adorable.

I always ignore the poppers in dungarees and just strip them off before a change, but I find poppers unaccountable difficult.

I really like the Blade & Rose leggings, really cute designs and a bit more robust.

Superscientist · 28/03/2024 09:29

My preference for comfy clothes is frugi. I get them in good second hand condition on eBay for the price of new supermarket clothes and the style is more to my style lots of nature designs and good quality fabric. I have a 1st percentile child and since being 1 gets at least a year out of clothes. She's 3.5 now and has been in some clothes for 2 years so we see the difference on quality!

Rainyspringflowers · 28/03/2024 09:31

I find leggings really faffy but dd is a kicker and always manages to kick them off during nappy changes, although she does have a lot of them and tops with a cardigan. Finding matching socks is the bane of my life.

Dresses with tights are surprisingly practical, DD has a few in soft cotton t shirt material rather than corduroy or anything stiff like denim. Not as good if you have a baby boy though.

RedDuffle · 28/03/2024 09:36

I have always favoured little 2 piece tracksuits/trouser & jumper sets for my DD, with a vest underneath. Primark do good 2 piece 'leisure sets' where you can get the same style or mix and match.

A dress is easy too but not when they're in the crawling stage as it catches under their knees. Looking forward to putting her in some cute summer dresses this year now she can walk 🙂

I love the woolly material of Blade & Rose leggings but I'm not keen on the designs. Much prefer the material though because I worry thinner leggings aren't warm enough at this time of year.

Jojo maman Bebe have some similarly thick ones I think and might have designs that you prefer?

H&M also have thicker ‘brushed inside’ leggings in neutral designs which are really reasonable, like £3.99 a pair!

That’s the one. It has mixed success as she is an absolute wizard! I have so many odds socks now which absolutely does my head in 😂

MrsTeepee · 28/03/2024 11:15

Agree with another poster who said to avoid dungarees and anything with poppers or buttons in the crotch... We found they were an absolute nightmare as they always popped open, despite looking adorable!

Tights for girls are great for not losing socks, but dresses did get in the way when crawling so not always the best. Leggings and vests/tops did seem to work better for us day to day, and we kept dresses and tights for special-ish occasions and then when she was walking. You can also get tights and shorts (and then in summer on warm days just remove tights on warmer days).

DifficultBloodyWoman · 28/03/2024 11:23

I like bodysuit dresses. But I live in a warmer climate. I used wondersuits as pjs from about 6 months onwards.

Fridaysgirl17 · 28/03/2024 11:24

Joggers & co-ords were & still are my go to for my boys, they are 3&6, I loved dungarees but my boys were wrigglers from day dot so if they didn't have the poppers they were a no go.

NadiyahZ · 28/03/2024 12:44

My 17 month old has always worn tights and a knee length dress, we add a vest and/or cardi when the weather calls for it, and switch to frilly socks in the summer months and sometimes a shorter dress and frilly knickers. Practical for nappy changes and looks lovely and girly.
She crawled and walked really early (7 and 9 months respectively) despite often being in dresses with a lot of fabric/petticoats.

We have reached a point though where she won’t accept trousers, which will be fun as leggings are the uniform at her preschool which she starts at the end of the year 😆

blankhert · 28/03/2024 16:17

I have an almost 9 month old and always put her in 'bloomer rompers' like the one pictured with tights. Super easy nappy change as it's just normally two poppers underneath, looks nice like a dress but easier for her to crawl in! Used to like dungarees, but she thrashes around now and all the poppers are a nightmare to do up lol

Thanks everyone.

reading more responses, I may hold off on getting too many dresses as she may be crawling in the next couple of months and sounds like it may get in the way.

@Superscientist yes! I got a top from Frugi, it’s definitely pricey but they currently have an up to 60% off sale :)

Oh I forgot about these rompers, they were amazing, 100% would recommend them! Got some from Next in a multi-pack that were brilliant and I think Asda did them too (mainly in summer). Can easily add tights and a jacket for colder days too.

Mrssheepskin · 28/03/2024 20:07

I found dungarees a pain as they always either seemed to have a million poppers for nappy changes or just randomly popped open throughout the day. Tights and dress combo I didn’t find practical until they were walking as always felt they got in the way with crawling/climbing at soft play etc.

Good old vest, legging and jumper combo worked best for us!

Porridgeislife · 28/03/2024 20:13

I kept my daughter in Wondersuits up until 6 months old! Then we moved onto leggings, vest and cardigan or sweater.

Next do the best leggings, I like their £4 plain coloured ones with lace on the hem.

Bumbers · 28/03/2024 20:30

I kept the zip onsies until 1! No need for outfits in my view!

OOlivePenderghast · 29/03/2024 20:08

Unless your ds has grown out of his sleepsuits already, I would keep him in them until the weather gets warmer. You’ll need outfits for summer with short sleeve T-shirts and leggings/shorts or cute little rompers. I wouldn’t buy too many long sleeve T-shirts now because he won’t be wearing them for very long.

OOlivePenderghast · 29/03/2024 20:09

Sorry I meant dd, for girls I still preferred rompers to dresses until they start walking.

BurbageBrook · 29/03/2024 21:16

My baby is the same age and I still love sleepsuits but I prefer footless ones so she can play with her toes etc. Outfit wise I occasionally put her in matching top and leggings sets, dresses and tights etc.

BurbageBrook · 29/03/2024 21:18

PS I should say my baby isn't crawling yet.
I think dresses will be less practical once crawling and then I will likely switch to footless rompers and top/leggings combos in the spring.
