Hi,

Im worried about giving my son the MMR due to a lot of reports of parents of children with ASD that it triggered it and other things ive read however im worried that measles is on the rise and I obviously don't want him catching it. Has anyone ever had their GP agree to do a dingle measles vaccine rather than the MMR?

No, if you want single you have to pay for it privately.

Fast800 · 23/03/2024 07:33

No, it isn’t licensed in the UK.

No they won't do the single vaccine because it's completely unnecessary. There is no link between the MMR and Autism there never was and never will be.

Inyourwildestdreams · 23/03/2024 07:35

@Chloephilips What age is your son?

vjg13 · 23/03/2024 07:36

My daughter is 26 and the "link" between MMR and autism was already disregarded when she had her first MMR 20 odd years ago!

EarthbarsforMartians · 23/03/2024 07:36

Just give your child the vaccination your gp is offering. Mumps and rubella are nasty diseases too. Mumps is still circulating and can cause infertility in boys. Rubella can cause birth defects if you catch it when pregnant.
The ASD worry was a hoax started by a dr who wanted to sell a different vaccine. He has since lost his medical license.

Mouldyfoot · 23/03/2024 07:37

get Your facts straight and get the MMR.

LittleBearPad · 23/03/2024 07:38

There is no link between MMR and ASD.

concernedchild · 23/03/2024 07:38

Would you rather an autistic child or a dead child?

Chloephilips · 23/03/2024 07:48

Hes 13 months

I think the more we learn about all ND, the more we find much of it is genetic. There’s no link between ASD and the MMR. There are, however, links between long term disability and illnesses like Measles.

GrammarTeacher · 23/03/2024 07:58

There is no link. There never was. Andrew Wakefield was so immoral he has been struck off. It was nonsense. Have the MMR.

ConJob · 23/03/2024 08:42

Autism is genetic, it doesn't not come from vaccines.

dementedpixie · 23/03/2024 08:46

If you want your child protected from mumps and rubella as well as measles then you'd need to give a combined vaccine anyway as you can't get single vaccines for those 2.

Measles vaccine is only available privately so you'd need to pay for it too.

I'd just get the MMR. Any link to autism has been debunked

DisplayPurposesOnly · 23/03/2024 08:50

I'm 56 and having the MMR vaccination myself. I'll let you know when my autism switches on 😂

In the meantime...

IkeaMeatballGravy · 23/03/2024 08:50

Give me my child with ASD over a NT child with long term complications of measles, mumps or rubella any day! Besides the MMR vaccine does not cause autism, that myth was debunked years ago.

Please get your child vaccinated.

ForestBather · 23/03/2024 08:51

Autism existed before the MMR was invented. If you son happened to be autistic, he already is because it's genetic.

And don’t google whether there is a link because you won’t read the NHS pages. You’ll read the conspiracy theorist ones.

effoffwind · 23/03/2024 08:53

Please have your child vaccinated

The recent rise in Measles ( especially here in the West Midlands ) has resulted in some very very poorly children

Totally unnecessary, the false reporting of this link was ruled out many years ago

100% this. Andrew Wakefield should be hanged, drawn and quartered for the damage he has caused.

Lammveg · 23/03/2024 11:46

Just to say - People may blame the vaccine for their child's autism, but it's likely that the traits associated with autism are beginning to appear around the same time that the vaccines happen.

That's not to say that there aren't sometimes side effects from vaccines, but overall, for the vast, vast majority there are unlikely to be any significant side effects and the diseases they protect against are likely to cause much more harm if contracted.

Superscientist · 23/03/2024 13:30

My uncle died aged 9 having barely left the hospital since he was born with a heart defect caused by my grandmother contracting rubella in pregnancy
My dad had to have an operation on his eyes to correct a problem caused by contracting measles. He is in his mid 60s now and his optician says he is very lucky to still have his vision as often people who have this operation are partially sighted by the time they are in their 60s
I went in uni in 2006 when they were just realising that one dose of the mmr wasn't sufficient and there were measles and mumps outbreaks. There was genuine fear when someone you had been dancing with in a crowded nightclub came ill with mumps a few days later. Mumps was more prevalent than measles in my social circles.
The mmr does not cause autism but there are very real consequences of not getting the mmr. Get the vaccine

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 23/03/2024 13:32

As everyone else has said there is absolutely NO link between autism and the MMR. Wakefield was a crook. He should be in prison for the damage he has caused to the vaccine programme in this country.

Please get your child vaccinated.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/03/2024 13:39

As PPs have said, I would rather my child had ASD than contract one of those viruses and die! Not that having the vaccine gives anyone ASD anyway!
