How often are we bathing kids?

We have a 1 year old and a 4 year old, bath time is usually twice a week and they also get a shower after the swimming pool. A friend recently advised she baths her kids every night? I thought this wasn't great for their skin but now im not sure. I shower at least once a day but didnt think kids need that as they dont sweat

Daily but I’m the odd one out….except when they went swimming…they were clean enough!

Globetrote · 01/03/2024 19:39

A shower alternate days for DS(9), and a bath at least once a week if he wants to. I feel that a good routine for being clean and fresh will hopefully help him in the teen years so he won’t become a soap dodger. When he was little it was a daily bath or shower.

Water is a fun, sensory experience for most young children too and not just a necessity for having a soapy wash and shampoo.

Primary-age children aren’t renowned for being skilled at wiping their bottoms after a no.2 either so it’s surprising so many on here are only being bathed twice a week.

You really can smell the ones that bathe once or twice a week. They always have a musty smell. There's no way a 1 year old doesn't get food in their hair daily. Ours shower or bathe everyday as do we!

I dont think this is true, are you a teacher? My DS wears a clean ironed uniform everyday and has his face etc washed and then he's washed three times a week, i dont think anyone would smell him and think hes "musty" 😂

When in nappies, every night as a bed time routine. Now out of nappies 2-3 times a week and a shower after swimming.

TheBeeb · 01/03/2024 19:42

I have kids the same age and they get bathed twice a week. More often if they get particularly filthy but generally they aren't too bad!

They won't!

A bath/shower once a week plus a shower after swimming if they go

How old are they?

ohspringblossom · 01/03/2024 19:48

Oh God, a grubby little kid, who is not quite there with use of loo roll, who gets food and drink spots and splashes on the face, touches everything in sight, maybe puts fingers up the nose etc etc?? A bath every evening as a minimum. And I'm not a clean freak.

What about the summer when they’ve had at least one round of sunscreen on? Mine were always sticky every day from that.

We’ve always washed every day from tiny. When tiny they frequently had food/paint/mud in their hair. Now at 11 the eldest needs to be in good habits and more or less is (for now at least).

Oh, ues, sunscreen days DD4 is showered every day. I forgot about that.

Pickledprawn · 01/03/2024 19:49

Everyday but no bubble bath or soap just water just to stop her bum getting sore. And then I wash her hair once a week after swimming.

Noicant · 01/03/2024 19:49

Every night, DC (4) isn’t dry at night yet and she’s always got food, paint in her hair etc . It’s part of her routine and tbf by the end of the day she needs a wash.

Tisfortired · 01/03/2024 19:50

My eldest is 10 and has a shower every other night. This has graduated from a bath twice a week that he was having until about a year ago. When he starts puberty he’ll be having one every day.

Youngest is only 14 months and still on the 2 bath a week system unless he’s unusually grubby or has had nappy explosion.

BarberellaWife · 01/03/2024 19:51

Every night before bed. Takes 15 minutes for both children. Much easier than any other way of washing them.
Why people bath their children less than themselves is beyond me.

Are my children total oddities because I often see people saying that their children don't sweat but mine absolutely do!

Of course they sweat. Even babies sweat in summer or if over swaddled

Lulubo1 · 01/03/2024 19:54

I bathe my DD (almost 2yo) every day. I only wash her hair with shampoo and conditioner on nursery days (3) and swimming lesson days (1). She gets messy and grubby. I can't not bathe her. She even asks for a bath at the end of the day

RidingMyBike · 01/03/2024 19:56

A bath once or twice a week.

But that isn't the only way to get washed. Mine washes face and bottom twice a day with flannels and a basin of water?

Superscientist · 01/03/2024 19:56

My daughter was washed every 5-10 days. Most commonly 6-7 days having a bath at the weekend but we now go swimming on a Wednesday so she has a shower then too.
I shower every 5-7 days and when I didn't I had awful skin and permanently itched. It was horrible. My partner washes a similar frequency too.

OMG kids are filthy creatures!
They need to be bathed everyday, the ones at my school stink if they aren’t bathed very regularly and that’s more than twice a week with an after swim shower in my book.
You can literally smell the unbathed ones ☹️

I really hope that you are not a teacher. The way you’ve described children is vile, ‘you can literally smell the un bathed ones’. Just wow

crew2022 · 01/03/2024 19:58

Every night

Pigglyplaystruant99 · 01/03/2024 19:58

Every night.

WeightoftheWorld · 01/03/2024 19:59

2 yo only once a week unless he gets really filthy (usually food related) and then will have the odd extra one. 5 yo twice a week and likewise odd extra if very dirty. HCPs all tell me this is all fine, both of them have eczema.

Honeybeebuzz · 01/03/2024 20:04

Thanks everyone for the feedback, really interesting how everyone varies. I think we may add in a quick shower before bed one night a week when needed.

Mintearo7 · 01/03/2024 20:05

Both (1 and 5) almost every day. No bubble bath and aveeno wash on hands and face. They are not grubby but we’ve done it since covid and I think it makes a difference in them not getting as many bugs.

AFreshCleanStart · 01/03/2024 20:08

Every other night for mine unless they're particularly dirty or have been swimming

Why is that vile?
Its the truth!
