I’m a Tesco lover really but have been trying aldi to see if it could save me money.
a lot of things are cheaper like crisps, kids snacks etc but over all I don’t think I’m actually saving that much money switching from Tesco to aldi.
do any of you find much of a difference ?

Tesco price match to Aldi on a lot of things I buy.

I also have clubcard plus, and with the clubcard prices and 10% off a shop twice a month there’s not much difference in price. I used to love Aldi but the quality of fruit and veg is shit so I always ended up doing a top up shop too.

Chanxex · 26/02/2024 19:18

Much much cheaper. A £150 Tesco shop is about £100 in aldi

yoshiblue · 26/02/2024 20:18

Aldi is cheaper but difference is a lot less than it used to be. Pre covid it was the first place I went for all household items, seemed half the price of Sainsbury's.

I think Aldi has gone up in price and Sainsburys has come down. Quality of fruit/veg/meat way better than Aldi. I do pop in, but certainly not as much of a draw as it was.

We used to get a Tesco delivery, and do a top up at Aldi to save money. Swapped to buying everything from Tesco and saving approx £40 p/wk. We were dreadful for buying stuff not on the list, so a purely online delivery has saved us ££. Saved time too

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 26/02/2024 20:34

I used to go to Aldi but it was so stressful as lights so bright and all rushed and now go to dunnes stores for few bits and then Lidl which is cleaner, cheaper and their fruit and veg stays fresher for longer and chicken better quality also, staff nicer and overall a more relaxed shopping trip. Is so much cheaper.

Hibye23289 · 26/02/2024 20:35

Aldi prices have defo gone up!!! Not much difference in other shops now

ZenNudist · 26/02/2024 20:43

Aldi still cheaper but their veg is not great quality and I don't rate the convenience foods at all. I go to sainsbury's for better veg and nicer tasting hummus etc. It's right next door so I can still buy slightly cheaper at aldi and top up at sainsbury's.

I like lidl for nice bakery, OK veg, good deals on meat.

Sainsbury's meat is rubbish. Same quality as aldi but more expensive.

I really don't rate tesco. Nasty tasting veg, expensive, horrible tasting convenience foods. I like the clothing and it's good for random ingredients but it's massive and shopping there takes forever. I don't appreciate the club card swizz pricing. So annoying.

I quite like asda food, clothing and home but it's pricey and a massive store that takes too long to shop in.

Aldi for me keeps it simple and I can do a quick shop but it's nowhere near as good as it used to be.

ItRainsItPours · 26/02/2024 20:59

I think Tesco is cheaper, as long as you stock up on non perishables when they are on Clubcard offers.

sleepyscientist · 26/02/2024 21:10

Depends what in your trolley, ultra processed is cheaper in Aldi. Fruit and veg is pretty much the same but we find it doesn't last. Greengrocer for fruit and veg then Aldi for things like everyday pasta, tins, some crisps and pop. If we want a treat convenience food like filled paste or pizza it's Sainsbury's

Cas112 · 26/02/2024 21:12

Yep

llamadrama16 · 26/02/2024 21:16

My weekly shop nearly halved switching from Sainsbury's to Aldi. Aldi feels like 'normal' prices!

Puzzlefactor · 26/02/2024 21:18

Not really and most of the home brand stuff is horrible. Crisps and chocolate are okish but I much prefer Tesco home brand.

I cook mostly from scratch and still find Aldi much cheaper. I've also bought filled pasta and pizzas from the 'Specially Selected' range and found them just as good as in other supermarkets. On the rare occasions I shop in Tesco or Sainsbury's I'm shocked at how much my shop comes to!

BarelyLiterate · 26/02/2024 21:23

The main reason why I find Aldi / Lidl cheaper is because there is just so much less choice & fewer options than at a big Tesco or Sainsbury’s. Even at today’s prices, I struggle to spend more than about £50 there for the two of us (excluding 🍷, obv). Unless it’s a theme week at Lidl, I just run out of options of interesting stuff I want to buy.

Funnily enough, I don’t have this problem at Waitrose or M&S, which is why I only tend to shop there just after pay day…

Aviee · 26/02/2024 21:28

Yes but Lidl is the cheapest around here

Mairzydotes · 26/02/2024 21:30

Yes , I find aldi cheaper. They don't stock the things I get tempted with in other supermarkets , so that helps keeps the total down .

Mind, I find Tesco has some really cheap items ,too . The Tesco I shop at is huge and has the Stockwells range which is their budget range. The little Tescos are more expensive

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 26/02/2024 21:39

Definitely cheaper! We average 60-70quid a week for a family of four at Aldi.

I cook from scratch and don't buy much convenience food.

Same shop in Tesco is around £120!

Haggis0381 · 18/05/2025 17:04

Much cheaper for me. I can get a week's shop for £25-30. Tesco is extortionate and I'm often £45. Sainsbury's is cheaper than Tesco, too! Don't like Tesco customer service, products, dual pricing or their delivery costs.

The hiked prices in Tesco Express are disgusting too. Asda is a close second for Aldi for me but don't live too close to one.

SendBooksAndTea · 18/05/2025 17:13

Ni, I think they'd like people to think that. I've found like for like they are very similar but often Aldi sizes are smaller. I find Teaco own brands to be better quality. I do sometimes like using Aldi for a change, but price wise they are almost exactly the same.

BlossomMoon · 18/05/2025 17:24

No I don't think it is cheaper. There seems to be this 'following' when it comes to Aldi. I think years ago, it used to be cheaper, but now when you weigh it up it really isn't. People have just got into the habit of shopping there.
A lot of the products are smaller sizes and weights. They don't stock many items all the time, and are 'promotional'. I personally don't find the quality or the flavours of many of their products to be great. So many shops are doing the 'Aldi price match' that you can shop in better supermarkets for the same price.
The thing I've always found with Aldi is that to be cheap, they've got to stint somewhere. I feel they'll stint on many things to remain cheaper. That's got to affect their quality and range.

JS25 · 18/05/2025 19:06

I don’t think I save all that much overall. I can’t get everyone I need or want in Aldi so I usually have to go to multiple places. So fuel costs etc probably make it about the same as if I just went to tescos.

thismummydrinksgin · 18/05/2025 19:07

I don’t, and I find their cheaper stuff has a lot of nasties added

FrothyCothy · 18/05/2025 19:18

Not when I factor in the time it takes for me to go there and shop and then have to go pick up the things they don’t have from another supermarket. Tesco click and collect is nearer and is often free in the early morning slots, and I can do it all from the comfort of my sofa, so we rarely bother with Aldi anymore

GroovyChick87 · 18/05/2025 19:26

I do find it cheaper and also Lidl, but I've noticed that more and more items are getting to be just as expensive as they are elsewhere, especially the meat. Things like tins, cleaning products, fresh produce are always consistently cheaper

TheRosesAreInBloom · 18/05/2025 19:30

Also check the ingredients in processed foods, Aldi is often cheaper due to the number of filler chemicals they use 😳
