Sterilising bottles abroad

Hiya ladies
im going away with little one in June. She’ll be nearly 8 months when I go.
I’ll be using the Milton cold water sterilisation method out there, the only thing I’m not sure about is the water?
so for example washing the bottles in normal tap water is fine as I’ll be sterilising after, but as I’m flying to turkey and they recommend not to drink from the tap, do I need to use cooled boiled water in the Milton bucket, or do I buy big bottled waters?
im assuming that if the Milton tablets kill bacteria in the bottles then they’ll kill any bacteria in the tap water, but I just thought I’d ask what other mums have done in the past… I’m a FTM and very clueless about holidaying with a baby lol…

I used tap water but if you’re unsure of the tap water in Turkey then I would use bottled water if it will help with peace of mind! I was in germany and my husband was drinking from the hotel tap (ewww)

The OP says she's going to Turkey

I'm guessing you'll have a kettle in your room? There's no need to take the Milton. Just pour hot water over everything and leave it. At that age the sterilising is a bit useless tbh they are moving about putting all sorts of shit in their mouth.

Oops. Sorry. Use Milton tablets for everything.

I used bottled water in Turkey. I found Istanbul to be one of the least family friendly cities I've ever been to. So go prepared! I never once found baby changing facilities in a restaurant for example. If you're going to a resort then obviously that's totally different x

Ppeter500 · 17/02/2024 21:56

@fortheloveofpogs thanks so much!
that’s really good to know. I’ve heard the same actually… I’m not allowed to take my car seat for the transfer as it’s going to take up too much room apparently so I already got the vibe that they don’t cater well for families!

@Thatcat thanks, I did check when I booked the hotel and they confirmed there’s no microwaves in the room. I have the mam bottles now so my first thought was microwave steriliser! I suppose I can always see if I can borrow one… worth another ask I suppose!

@nomchonge1 lol I’m a bit anti tap water abroad too but DP is the same and not phased!

@bingoringo4 great point … i was thinking whether I was being a bit fussy, but I know they say to sterilise up to one year and felt that maybe boarderline 8 months was a bit early to stop… might be worth me seeing how I feel about it all nearer the time. Was just trying to buy bits over the next few months to spread the cost but might be worth waiting on this one!

Hi OP. We did Turkey a few years back with our under 1yr old at the time. We had mam bottles and bought a folding 1ltr bucket from The Range so it could flat pack in the case and sterilise multiple bottles at once. We used tap water to wash up and to sterilise with Milton tablets. We used bottled water in the kettle when making formula. No tummy upsets so it worked for us.

Ppeter500 · 17/02/2024 22:20

@DragonCatcher oh amazing thank you sooo much that’s really good to know! So glad there were no upset bellies. Im just fretting about the what ifs. I’m sure once I see DD licking trollies and tablets and whatever else I won’t be too fussed about tap water abroad…

Yes of course you can, but ancient hotel taps are a separate thing. I wouldn't drink from a hotel tap in the UK either for what its worth...

Thank you for your useless input into this thread though 👌
