Sterilising abroad

Sorry if this is a silly question but how do I sterilise bottles / dummies abroad without a microwave ? Do I just use boiled bottled water and tablets?

I would take a Tupperware box with a lid and Milton tablets. Tap water will be fine to use for sterilising, it doesn't need to be boiled first.

Ot if you are staying in self catering, boil the items in a pot of water.

StarlingsInTheRoof · 15/04/2022 20:31

If you will have a microwave, you can get sterilising bags. You just add a bit of water and microwave. Take up no space.

@NannyR we are going to Greece and don't think you can drink the tap water?

You could use bottled water if you prefer, but the Milton would kill off any bugs in the tap water.

I always boiled water bottle in a kettle and let everything in after washing it!

Boots sell sterilising bags. They fold flat so easy to take with you.

Fill them with tap water and they have a sterilising tablet in them ready. Fill it up and hang on the door handle.

Took them to Dubai and was really impressed.

Are you self catering? If so, boil them for a minute or two.

If not, the sterilising bags are good.

Twizbe · 15/04/2022 21:19

Its Europe it's fine. Plus you're sterilising it so even more fine.

You can use bottle water for the actual formula if you prefer. Look out for ones that are safe for babies.

But you're boiling the water before making the formula so not necessary.

I used to take a big tupperware container - filled it with pants or something in the case so it took up no room - and milton tablets. I always used the tap water. That's what the sterilising tablets are for....If nervous - buy cheap bottled water. I bought evian for making up bottles as low in minerals. Other local ones will be the same.

teaandtoest · 15/04/2022 21:21

I used to take an empty plastic fairy laundry tabs box! Just the right size for a couple of bottles. Use a Milton tab in either bottled or tap water.

stimpyyouidiot · 15/04/2022 21:22

We used Milton tablets and bottled water in a big tub. We also took a kettle with us.

I def wouldn't use the tap water.

JelloFishy · 15/04/2022 21:28

We did Turkey with a little one. We took the premade milk. There was loads of us to spread the weight. Someone told me that some mineral water is high in sodium, so if you are going to use bottle water it may be worth checking it out. Not sure how true it is as I never bothered to check because we took premade.

A way around the weight issue of premade is to order it into the boots if you are flying from Gatwick to collect air side.

The hotel gave us some washing up liquid to clean the bottles and then we used tap water and Milton tablets.
