4 Year old DD has measles, has had one vaccination

DD has started to develop symptoms last night and she was off school today then we got a letter from the school about measles.

She's had one of the vaccinations and we stupidly never got round to getting the second vaccination. Will she have less symptoms since she has one of the vaccinations?

What can we expect? What day is generally the worst? Any tips are welcome!

Is it definitely measles she has though? The 2nd vaccine is usually around 3y 4months so she's not super late for it.

1 vaccine gives a fairly high protection and the 2nd one catches people that didn't get protection the 1st time

This must be concerning for you, but are you sure it’s measles? While cases are higher than usual, it is still incredibly rare and if she’s vaccinated once she’s more than 90% certain to be immune.

VivaVivaa · 07/02/2024 20:05

The first symptoms of measles are very general - fever/coughing/sneezing etc. Rash generally appears after a number of days. If she only became poorly last night it’s far more likely to be a run of the mill cold. Are you in the West Midlands? Either way you should probably try and speak to the GP if you think it’s measles.

Measles is a notifiable disease so if you think that's what she has then you should be contacting her GP. 1 MMR is supposed to be 95% effective against measles

We live by Birmingham and I kept her off school this morning, then we get a letter about measles from school in the afternoon. For the first time she has conjunctivitis, she also has loss of appetite, temperature, tiredness. I will have to see if a rash develops on the weekend but it seems like it is measles.

i understand why you are worried but I think you are probably jumping the gun a bit. Hope it turns out to be the usual winter germs.

dementedpixie · 08/02/2024 07:30

It could be anything so I don't know why you've jumped to measles if she has no rash.

But 10,000 other common or garden viruses also have these symptoms. They’re not specific to measles and she has no rash. Why are you convinced it’s measles just because you got the letter today? Are you struggling with anxiety about health?

shockeditellyou · 08/02/2024 07:34

if someone was that anxious about health, I’d expect them to prioritise the second dose of vaccine!

I am not one for bothering GPs but given that measles is a notifiable disease I would a) call the GP and b) bloody well sort out vaccination!

ChAmpagnesupernissancorsa · 08/02/2024 07:35

Lots of scarlet fever doing the rounds at the moment that starts with similar symptoms. Does she have a white coating on her tongue or a spotty tongue?

NestaArcheron · 08/02/2024 07:37

I got a text from the nhs to book another MMR for both of my children on Monday, both have had two doses previously (they are 7 and 9) - is this the case for anyone else? I wasn't aware there was an influx in cases.

I hope your little one gets better very soon op.

I got one saying none of my DC needed one yesterday as they are all up to date. Check the text.

InTheRainOnATrain · 08/02/2024 07:46

Why are you jumping to measles with those very common symptoms? The first vaccine gives something like 95% immunity and many countries eg the USA don’t do the booster before 4 anyway, so I wouldn’t have thought she’s at risk at all although I’d still get it booked in ASAP. Just about every young child I know has had those symptoms in the past month, my youngest child only last week. I assumed common cold and he was fine in 2 days. Could also be an eye infection- you can get the pharmacist to look and prescribe drops if they think they’re needed. Less likely but still a lot more likely than measles are strep throat, tonsillitis or scarlet fever - have a look at her tongue and throat if you suspect those but they’re going around schools/nurseries at the moment.

I got this too- I don’t know which kid it was for but I have one DC who had the first dose abroad, the second privately (at 4YO!) and one who had the first dose at home given by a hospital research team as part of a medical study then was called in early to have the booster at 2 because we’re in an at risk area but this isn’t a new thing, it was a year ago. The practice nurse definitely updated their records though so IDK why we still got the text. There was another thread about it, sounds like lots of people got it even when their kids are fully vaccinated.

RedChester · 08/02/2024 07:57

She needs to be assessed by a GP. Ring this morning and let them know you’re concerned about measles and that she’s only had one dose of MMR. They can test for it. If it’s not measles then you can get her MMR booked ASAP when she is better.

DreadPirateRobots · 08/02/2024 07:59

I mean, by all means get her checked because as PP says measles is notifiable, but you've reached a huge conclusion from a standing start here. The symptoms you mention are common to many bugs, and there is a heck of a lot of stuff sloshing around in the population right now.

Radyward · 08/02/2024 08:04

Red eye is an early sign of measles. Then white spots on inside of mouth. Then rash .if you are in Birmingham. I would definately ring GP. A man here in ireland passed away linked to the measlea outbreak in Birmingham. Yes all the other symptoms you mention are vommon or garden but the ted eye is a red flag

ChocHotolate · 08/02/2024 08:05

There is so much measles around right now. I work in urgent care and we have rededicated a room for isolation and we are all being fitted for FFP3 masks again. Just like covid. Some children will die, some will have catastrophic effects of measles. Most will be fine.

Andrew Wakefield should be in prison for the damage he has inflicted on these children

Radyward · 08/02/2024 08:05

Apologies for all the typos. Ring Gp asap

CattingAbout · 08/02/2024 08:32

Didn't all schools get a letter about measles? I live in a part of the country where we haven't had any cases and we still got a letter.

RoseAndRose · 08/02/2024 08:36

She's probably "jumping to measles" because she lives in an outbreak area and has had a school letter about it.

OP: I suggest you contact your GP today, so they can arrange for swabs to test if it is indeed measles. And as you think it could be, then it's really important that you isolate DC until either lab confirmed negative or for whatever period the GP tells you if positive.

This. In this day and age not being up to date with your child’s vaccinations is inexcusable and very irresponsible. Poor child. Measles is a vile yet PREVENTABLE disease.
And how nice she could spread it yo an unvaccinated adult or someone who has had chemotherapy and lost their protection…🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 yep I am judging but I don’t care.

Kerfuffleplunk · 08/02/2024 09:42

yes vaccinate asap OP please, I was a child pre MMR, I've had Measles and Mumps and have the health issues/hearing problems to show for it. And for anyone who has older kids/teens/adults themselves ...you can still get the MMR even as an adult from your surgery!(unless you are an older adult) as they are trying to mop up all those unvaccinated people who may have missed becoming infected when younger.

Sahana28 · 08/02/2024 09:42

You should have just gotten your child fully vaccinated instead of taking risks and now it looks like your child is paying the price for your irresponsiblities.
I'm sick of parents not vaccinating their kids, then when the kids become sick, they take them to hospital where the kids will recieve more drugs than the actual vaccine which would have prevented the illness from occurring in the first place.

Or she could have any one of the many viral illnesses which have these symptoms. Maybe call your gp for advice and see if you can catch up the vaccine once your dc is well again.
