4 Year old DD has measles, has had one vaccination

DD has started to develop symptoms last night and she was off school today then we got a letter from the school about measles.

She's had one of the vaccinations and we stupidly never got round to getting the second vaccination. Will she have less symptoms since she has one of the vaccinations?

What can we expect? What day is generally the worst? Any tips are welcome!

I had measles as a child, I wasn't vaccinated due to family circumstances.

I was 11, I had to stay indoors for two weeks without light due to potential eye damage.

I was incredibly feverish for a week and was hallucinating (which I can remember)

I was very tired for three weeks and was kept off school. I remember it being scary as I was very tired and felt dreadful

Every school in England should be sending a letter home to make people aware of signs and symptoms and encourage vaccine. I work in a nursery and we had to send them out, like you one parent thought we had a case of measles in nursery (we didn't). You don't know for sure your child has measles does the letter actually say there has been a case in your school? It's more than like a cold/flu.

I belive that it's recently been revealed that Birmingham is the national hot spot for measles.

Even with the appropriate vaccination it's not guaranteed to be 100% so always worth checking with your gp practice.

If she has no rash, why have you jumped to thinking it’s measles? It might not be before you start panicking

SleepingStandingUp · 08/02/2024 19:28

Living where you live IP I do get the panic, we're near too and I'm glad my kids are old enough to have both doses.

But DS just had a week off work with fever, cough, etc and it turned out to be tonsillitis and a chest infection instead. Not to mention every second kid is coughing and has snotty noses ATM.

Of course it could be and you're absolutely right to keep checking but try not to panic yet.

My dd had it. She was very ill. The worst aspect was keeping her hydrated and cooling her temperature. I was syringing water into her mouth literally as she was struggling to drink.

The single dose of MMR will give your DD a lot of protection. If her school has a higher viral load than usual it is possible, but rare, for a child with one MMR dose to develop a milder form of measles.
IF you suspect it might be please call your GP for advice.

My DD , who medically cannot have most vaccines, started measles with an absolutely sky high temp, was off food, ached all over and had very watery eyes. Her eyes went pink when the rash broke out. Measles in eyes may seem similar to conjunctivitis but the light sensitivity can be something else.

GPs will be able to work out if it could be measles or if it’s caused by a virus that is mimicking some of measles symptoms and advise you.

Image is my DD eyes with measles, shared with her permission as she has said she would rather parents knew what measles eyes look like. Most children stay at this stage. It’s sore and uncomfortable but quickly resolves as the immune system beats the virus. DD eyelids then went puffy and her eyes were very sore. Light caused her pain and the whites of her eyes then went very red. She had to stay in a darken room with minimal light for a week on medical advice to help protect her sight as she was placed at risk of sight damaged we did not.

I truly hope this turns out to be a simple boring virus and not measles as that can be wretched. Hope that your DD bounces quickly back and is soon better.

Agree that you would be unlucky to get it if she has had one dose. My ds only had one dose and he didn't catch it from dd.
