Mum has brought baby clothes but they smell of smoke

Of course I'm washing them and that'll be it, but I'm a little gutted as she has got this lovely mamas and papas cushion thing, it's so soft and lovely but it reeks of fags now and I can't wash it, the cover doesn't come off or anything.
What can I do to get the smell out any ideas ? I can't just put it on the line either to air as it's too damp here
She doesn't smoke in the house (apparently) and I don't think she does as the house doesn't smell of smoke so not sure why the clothes and cushion stink so bad

Were they in her car...?

Will it fit in the washing machine? I'd put it inside a large pillow case or duvet cover and wash it. Nothing ventured nothing gained!

twnety · 29/01/2024 11:15

try putting in the freezer for a week?

Hopeful16 · 29/01/2024 11:18

Are you sure that it can't be washed? A cushion that is going to be near a baby and all of its excretions surely should be washable!?!?! Maybe risk a quick, cool wash and hope for the best. You've nothing to lose if it's unusable now.

Nightmanagerfan · 29/01/2024 11:21

Bin the cushion. Second hand smoke is very danger for babies and you don't want to put your baby at risk. Also read up on guidelines for smokers re being around babies (changing clothes, washing hands etc) before your mum spends time with your little one

vacay · 29/01/2024 11:22

I really really don't want to bin it, it was £50!!!
I might try washing it on a cool wash...
I know this is my third but people think I'm batty when I go on about it !

Possibly yes could be from the car

With my last baby I asked her not to smoke for a few hours before she came over, take jacket off, wash hands etc but I was made to feel ott by some, my mum was fine with it but could tell they thought I was being silly. But I guess the older generation of smokers do think that way

UpUpUpU · 29/01/2024 11:26

Bin it please OP. Its not worth the risk to your baby.

Heather37231 · 29/01/2024 11:27

Are the items brand new? Ie the smoke must have come from your Mum, not a previous owner?

MissusKay · 29/01/2024 11:27

Might as well try and wash it if it's going into the bin otherwise.

You aren't being batty - second and third hand smoke is bad. And for everyone who says my parents smoked and I was fine there's another who has asthma and is susceptible too every respiratory virus out there.

Heather37231 · 29/01/2024 11:28

Can you post a link to the cushion, so people can advise on washing?

vacay · 29/01/2024 11:30

Yes brand new which is why it feels so wasteful I just wish they didn't smoke

I suppose I could replace it myself and she would be none the wiser that way

QuestionableMouse · 29/01/2024 11:35

It looks like a big stuffed toy - it would probably be fine on a gentle wash.

Try washing it first surely?

vacay · 29/01/2024 11:39

Oh yeah I'll definitely try washing it first, would a 40 wash be alright or too hot ?

QuestionableMouse · 29/01/2024 11:45

What does it say on the label?

ditalini · 29/01/2024 11:50

Surely it will be washable - why on earth would you buy anything that a baby is going to be lying, drooling, posseting, possibly leaking nappies on that wasn't?

Ds1 had a couple of things like that and they were absolutely fine bunged in the washing machine on a standard 30 degree wash with spin and then left to dry (they had synthetic stuffing). They fluffed up nicely when dry.

You could try a more gentle wash first to be cautious, but you do want to get a bit of a spin going so that it doesn't sit wet for ages.

TallandSkinny · 29/01/2024 11:51

Bit of an over reaction to suggest binning a brand new item because it smells of smoke. It might smell but it will not kill your baby on exposure to tiny amounts of the smell of smoke (it's not actual smoke) on a rare occasion. Generations of kids grew up in houses where people smoked in the same room, and generations before that grew up in houses with open fires.

I would try to run it through the wash.

Singleandproud · 29/01/2024 11:53

I would use Dettol laundry cleaner and my normal detergent, and I would put it in the machine alone inside a pillow case and use the hand wash setting.
Depending on the stuffing if you spin it it might go lumpy - not sure baby would care though

LimePi · 29/01/2024 11:54

Just handwash the cushion in a bath, not everything has to be washed in a washing machine

Jigsaw742 · 29/01/2024 11:54

I would never risk it

QforCucumber · 29/01/2024 11:57

Mil claims she doesn't smoke in the house but everything you get from her, or when you leave hers, you can really smell it. but a quick wash in the machine, on a delicates wash will do it.

IrisVonEverec · 29/01/2024 11:59

What do the washing instructions say? Not very practical as a baby item if it can't be easily washed. What if the baby is sick on it?
