Mum has brought baby clothes but they smell of smoke

Of course I'm washing them and that'll be it, but I'm a little gutted as she has got this lovely mamas and papas cushion thing, it's so soft and lovely but it reeks of fags now and I can't wash it, the cover doesn't come off or anything.
What can I do to get the smell out any ideas ? I can't just put it on the line either to air as it's too damp here
She doesn't smoke in the house (apparently) and I don't think she does as the house doesn't smell of smoke so not sure why the clothes and cushion stink so bad

I don’t think it will do any harm but assuming it would, just wash it. Nobody could not wash it once used it’s literally under the babies mouth in the photos.

BananaPyjamaLlama · 29/01/2024 12:02

£39 for such a not at all innovative cushion is shocking to me. Its just a cushion!
Id try hand washing it op. Several times. And line dry it - even though its January, some days have been quite good drying days.
I hate the smell of ciggie smoke but I also hate chucking things. But theres nothing at all fancy about it either so Id probably just wash it and if that doesnt help donate it.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2024 12:07

The cushion will go all lumpy if you put it in the wash. I picked up an abandoned giant beanbag once which I only realised once we brought it inside, stunk the entire flat out. Unfortunately it was so massive I didn't know what to do with it so we put it out on the balcony and forgot about it for a month or so. When I went back to look at it, the smell had totally gone.

However as others are saying, there are risks associated with the smoke particles attached to things which could actually harm your baby. I would be fine to use the clothes if the smell washes out, but the cushion thing, I don't know if airing outside would actually get rid of those particles or not so I would probably get rid of it just in case. £50 is a shame but it's not worth your baby's long term future health.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2024 12:10

OTOH if it's only been in the car for a short time and picked up a superficial amount of smell it might not have loads of smoke particles in it. You might be able to get away with leaving the inner cushion outside for a couple of days to air and washing the cover.

BadgersGate · 29/01/2024 12:38

I would hang it on the line and let the wind, sun and rain do its thing. Then bring it in after a few days, dry it and see if how it smells.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 29/01/2024 12:48

If it's brand new, surely it had some packaging on it ?

Or did your mum remove all the packaging before giving it to you ?

Can you not put it somewhere else in your home before putting it out on the line if it is too damp today ?

How do you manage your mother's clothing, (despite washing her hands / not smoking for a couple of hours before) when she cuddles your baby - probably a lot of smoke actually on her than is on the cushion ?

Aquamarine1029 · 29/01/2024 12:51

I would wash it on hot and whatever happens, happens.

Nttttt · 29/01/2024 12:55

Everything for a new baby should be washed. From clothes to bedding etc… However I would not be putting my child near anything that had secondhand smoke on it unfortunately OP, just talk to her and explain your reasons, it’s totally understandable.

Or wash it on a 60 and if it gets messed up it’s still her fault.

beetr00 · 29/01/2024 12:56

Bit of an over reaction to suggest binning a brand new item because it smells of smoke. It might smell but it will not kill your baby on exposure to tiny amounts of the smell of smoke (it's not actual smoke) on a rare occasion. Generations of kids grew up in houses where people smoked in the same room, and generations before that grew up in houses with open fires.

I would try to run it through the wash.

It will increase the risk of baby dying from
SIDS.

InTheRainOnATrain · 29/01/2024 13:15

Just chuck the cushion. A handwash only product for a baby is ridiculous. If mum asks where it just say the baby had a nappy blowout on it and it couldn’t be washed so had to be binned, which let’s face it, is probably what would end up happening anyway! The clothes I’d wash with bio detergent and dettol laundry cleanser, then again with baby friendly non bio.

vacay · 29/01/2024 13:16

Thanks everyone. Would the washing machine hand wash cycle be alright ? If I use detergent and laundry cleanser too?
Worth trying to wash it first I think

I'd give it a wash before you commit to binning it - you're not losing anything! Try a wool wash or delicates, if your washer has one.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 29/01/2024 13:18

100% wash it first! If you don't want to risk the machine you could hand wash it in the sink or bath if it's big. Soak with detergent for 24 hours or something.

I would be putting it on a 60/90 degree wash x

vacay · 29/01/2024 13:23

I'm such a dick. Just found a little cardboard tag on it, it says machine washable at 40.
Very relieved, it was paining me thinking it'd need binning because of the money 😆

Think I'll do an eco 60 though with detergent and laundry cleanser

If you look at the picture in the link, the baby's face is right by the pillow thing. Given that putting this baby on that pillow is completely optional, I don't think I would have put mine on a pillow that stank of smoke. It means that those molecules are on it, and that they will therefore be going into baby's lungs. Which, whilst it may not kill OP's baby, is a ridiculous thing to do voluntarily and unnecessarily. My mum grew up in a house of chain smokers. Her lungs are shit to this day. My mum has never smoked, ever, not even once, and a doctor told her that he didn't believe her. Anyway she has cancer. Just because it has been done, doesn't mean it should be repeated.

vacay · 29/01/2024 13:25

My partner smelt it and said he could smell smoke a bit on it but I can smell it really strongly, maybe my pregnancy nose is making it smell more but even so, it stinks
It's weird as I'm an ex smoker and when you smoke you cannot smell the smoke AT ALL but once you stop you realise just how bad fags smell, I was shocked what I must've smelt like myself

It doesn't need a hot wash. You'll wreck it OP.

I know this things are sold as safe for sleeping babies but they're not really. Ok for propping up when older maybe.

vacay · 29/01/2024 11:22

I really really don't want to bin it, it was £50!!!
I might try washing it on a cool wash...
I know this is my third but people think I'm batty when I go on about it !

wash it at 40 with a "scoosh" of white vinegar.

Oh no it'll be used as a tummy time aid under supervision, baby won't be sleeping on it/with it

I have this cushion - it's been washed in the machine on hand wash setting with same detergent I use for son's clothes and it's all good.
