Nightime potty training. How do you do it?

My ds is 3 in june and has been potty trained during the day for 3 months.
He still has a nappy on at night and usually has a poo as soon as he wakes in the morning.
How do i get him trained through the night or do i jusy wait till he has dry nappies in the morning?
Any advice would be great.

My dd is now dry at night, but only for the past 2 weeks or so. She kept having tantrums about putting her bedtime nappy on because nappies are for babies. I was a bit cautious about doing it because her nappies were rarely dry in the morning, but one night I gave in to her and put her to bed without a nappy...

...she was dry in the morning and has been ever since!

Maybe you could just try it for a night and see how you go.

Just wait.

You can't train a child to be dry at night. It just happens. Something to do with a hrmone that usually kicks in sometime between the ages of 18 months and 7 years. Unil then it will be a poinless exercise.

My DD was dry within 3 days during the day at 24 months, She is nearly 6 now and still has the odd accident if she drinks anything bar water after about 3pm.

MyDingaling · 18/03/2008 22:09

2.10 she will be 3 in May
I am jumping the gun a little - only started potty training on Sat but she is doing really well - 4 accidents in 4 days. Her nappy wasn't as wet as usual this morning but, like you, I would like her to be out of nappies before she is 3.
Fingers crosse somebody will come along to help!

nobodysfool · 18/03/2008 22:11

He got the hang of potty training in the second day a very rarely has an accident.Maybe i'm expecting too much too soon.
He has got amazing bladder control and can hold it for AGES but i still remind him to go as he would only go every 5 hours or so and he drinks lots of water.
So i take it a lot of children are still not dry through the night?

Yes, it is very common for school age children to still be wet at night. Do a MN search on the topic and there are loads of threads on the topic. Definitly nothing to worry about at 2 and 3 years old.

nobodysfool · 18/03/2008 22:13

So wait for the dry nappies then?

Yes, and unfortunately for the child, determination and desire to be dry does not mean they will be dry at night. DD was so keen to not have accidents and used to get quite upset about accidents, but there was simply nothing she or us could do to prevent it.

One day it will just happen.

nobodysfool · 18/03/2008 22:17

Right that's it i am offically not starting night training.I will wait till he does it on his own.x

Good luck Best thing really is to not worry about it.

Belgianchocolates · 18/03/2008 22:20

I'm still waiting for things to happen with ds(6), he was 19m when dry in the day, but is wet almost every day. We're in the largest pyjama pants at the mo and I really wished he'd start to be dry at night, because it's costing us a fortune. I'm aware though that if by the end of the year he's still wet, we'll have to take him to the GP for some tests or something. Hope he'll do it before then.
Dd on the other hand took until she was 3 to start going on the potty, but did day and night at once.

nobodysfool · 18/03/2008 22:22

I just wondered if by putting my ds in a nappy is "allowing" him to wee.Or is it something he can't control at this age?

OP posts:
Belgianchocolates · 18/03/2008 22:28

Well I thought the same, so I tested it by letting him sleep without a nappy (but obviously with bedpads/plastic sheets/other protection) for a week and found that it did not make a difference, so the nappies came back.

nobodysfool · 18/03/2008 22:32

belgiumchocs- wasn't having a dig at your ds.Hope i didn't offend.

Just wondered in that in general that would be the case.

Good idea orinoco.
Think i will give him a while longer anyway.
I worry about everything!

Nobodysfool. No, you didn't offend my ds at all. My reply wasn't me defending my ds. Just me saying that I had the same thought and tested it, unsuccessfully of course in his case.
My mum hasn't been giving me much hope either. She said that she was occasionally wet until she was 15 and one of my uncle wasn't dry until he was 18 . She said she talked to a urologist at work and was told that bedwetting is something that does run in families.

nobodysfool · 19/03/2008 19:28

Sorry about delay in answering i think my pc must have had a senior moment.I couldn't get back onto any threads!

Belgchocs- Bet you wish your mum hadn't have told you!

You're right nobody's fool, I really wished my mum hadn't told me. I hope it wont take my ds that long. If it would, I'd definitely visit my GP well before that. Even now I worry that he wont be dry in time to start having sleepovers and stuff. At the moment he doesn't realise that he's unusual, but the day he realises that his friends are dry at night, will be hard for him I think.

MNersanonymous · 21/03/2008 17:18

Just happened with ds (2.9)- maybe a week after he was dry in the day he started waking with a dry nappy. I didn't do or say anything. (I'm so tempting fate for a first accident tonight!)

After a couple of weeks of dry nappies in the morning, we were brave and decided to send him to bed with pants about 5 nights ago. So far so good but who knows if it will last!!

He has a wee immediately after getting up.

MNersanonymous · 21/03/2008 17:21

p.s. I planned to leave him in night nappies for at least another 6 months and wasn't in a rush but he had a really very bad rash on his bum and the nappy seemed to make it worse.

So i'd say just leave it for a while and see if the nappies go dry alone rather than risking having to get up at night to change the sheets etc

Ineedsomesleep · 22/03/2008 09:03

How about borrowing some cloth nappies and trying those?

We use cloth and DS was trained day and night from about 26 months. He just sort of figured it out for himself. Think he decided that he didn't like the cold wet feeling and went straight to pants.

If you couldn't borrow some cloth, maybe pants, a mattress protector and a potty in the room and see how you get on?
