Nits! Wits end - what will remove once and for all?

So me and my 3DC have nits. Have put Hedron on overnight three times in past 10 days, but still they are there.
Any recommendations as to what I should try? Getting fed up of the scratching!

Nitty gritty lotion and comb every 3 days for 15 days.

Flyhigher · 15/01/2024 02:17

Nitty gritty comb in sections. Four ways each section.

Zap them with something like this from the chemist. Every second night for a couple of weeks - they should be gone by day 17.

WhatAFoolishFool · 15/01/2024 17:23

@urbanbuddha meanwhile spreading lice to all and Sundry! God no. Someone at my kids school uses this bollocks and they’re the reason my child has been treated so frequently for nits!

seathewayahead · 15/01/2024 17:28

Nit comb through conditioner every time you / they wash their hair (and yours)

urbanbuddha · 16/01/2024 07:36

@WhatAFoolishFool

How so? It just kills the lice immediately! Stops the scratching, and then you condition and comb. Can’t see why you think it would spread lice.

WhatAFoolishFool · 16/01/2024 13:02

theres always one that gets missed, and nobody keeps it up every day waiting for the new lice to hatch

LewishamMumNow · 16/01/2024 16:04

Well we used Full Marks yesterday. My DD was scratching this morning tho', and I'm feeling a bit itchy, although much less than before. They are defo going down, but until they are gone, I can't stop trying to get them out.
Plus my DDs nursery won't let her in if they know she's got nits. They pointed out last Thursday when I picked her up it needed treating; she's had three lots of either Hedron or Full Marks since then and gone back today, but I don't think the *uckers are gone.

Nitty gritty comb. We did combed with conditioner every day for a week, then every other day for a week. I now comb once a week and would use the combing schedule I used previously if I found anything again

All2Well · 16/01/2024 16:10

The lice sound like they are resistant to chemicals. Some lice are and that's why I recommended the cetaphil method in my first post. It worked for all of my family and is what is recommended in a lot of US school outbreaks. It smothers them to death.

LewishamMumNow · 16/01/2024 16:14

Thanks @All2Well My local options are a bit limited, but I'll be trying your method soon I think.

Nitty gritty comb with conditioner every day for a week.

Much more effective and safer than chemicals

This unfortunately

DyslexicPoster · 16/01/2024 16:17

Don't rinse the conditioner out either. Stops the nits sticking as well as they should

WhatAFoolishFool · 16/01/2024 16:21

@LewishamMumNow full marks doesn’t kill the eggs so it’s a waste of money. Amazon do nitwits lotion. Stop wasting your time with anything else.

dorry678 · 16/01/2024 16:25

Yes some people are more prone to them than others! My son was always getting them, but had lovely silky hair that could be combed with a nitty gritty comb. Myself and DD, super thick long hair, absolutely no way that could be combed!
He got them at least 8 times, DD and I once each.
We needed nuclear chemical treatments, his could be combed out, but it would take a long time to make sure every egg and nit was removed. I did it in the bath and wiped every stroke onto loo roll and flushed. Repeated for days, used tea tree oil to prevent. All would be good, then six months later he would be running with them again!😢

No idea if he had friends with them and was being infected, but shit they loved him.

CocoPlum · 16/01/2024 16:33

Another vote for the nitty gritty comb. Use cheaper conditioner as it's not as thick so it makes combing slightly easier. I'd do every other day for a week, then every 3 days for another week or two,.and then a maintenance comb once a week. Hair up, always. If your child is old enough for you to safely use straighteners on their hair, I found that seemed to speed the process along.

Terrribletwos · 16/01/2024 16:42

Horrendous I know! But, I have found, you really need to take the time and scrupulously sit and comb every nit and louse out of their hair, there is really no other way, unfortunately 😔

VanLife33 · 19/01/2024 17:25

Vamousse!

JulesJules · 19/01/2024 17:52

Vamousse. Neither DH, DD1 or I had ever had nits but then Dd2 got them I'm middle school. Herding worked the first time, but not the second time. We did the nitty gritty combing with conditioner too. But Vamousse worked.

JulesJules · 19/01/2024 17:53

Hedrin not herding. Can't imagine them cooperating with herding tbh

hampsteadmum · 19/01/2024 18:18

The best method to get rid once and for all is to vacuum them off. Back in the day when mine were in primary school we used Hairforce. hairforceclinics.com/ Nothing beats them. They have clinics around the country but not enough... 🤪 They are excellent. You sit there watching a movie and they vacuum the nasties off the hair.
