Nits! Wits end - what will remove once and for all?

LewishamMumNow · 14/01/2024 20:28

So me and my 3DC have nits. Have put Hedron on overnight three times in past 10 days, but still they are there.
Any recommendations as to what I should try? Getting fed up of the scratching!

I found NitWits really good.

Quickredfox · 14/01/2024 20:37

You need to comb with conditioner following the life cycle of the nits, so you get any newly hatched. The nhs page on nits gives the schedule.

spriots · 14/01/2024 20:39

Nitty gritty comb with conditioner every day for a week.

Much more effective and safer than chemicals

VanLife33 · 14/01/2024 20:41

Vamousse !!!
It's a one and done treatment. Kills the nits and the eggs!

My daughter had nits for a few months last year as we could not get rid of them.

Vamousse got rid of them in one go! No second treatment 10 days later.
It will be my go to if she gets them again.

A few downsides,

  • strong smell
  • dried the skin on my hands so much they started to peel, so I suggest wearing gloves
  • my daughter said it felt tingly on her head

It says no need to comb but I did just to be sure!

WhatAFoolishFool · 14/01/2024 20:41

I always use nitwits lotion and comb through and it always kills everything in one treatment.

LewishamMumNow · 14/01/2024 20:44

Thanks all.
@VanLife33 I shall buy tomorrow.

We tried everything, combing through several times a day with conditioner and nitty gritty comb, other combs, straighteners, hedrin etc but Nitwits was the thing that shifted them for good. It kills the eggs and the lice. I got mine through Amazon.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 14/01/2024 20:51

I would also recommend you are all treated on the same day so you're not passing them from head to head.

VanLife33 · 14/01/2024 20:53

Sorry it does say to comb, I think it comes with one actually!
I tried so many different ones when she had them 😂
Vamousse won't let you down!
Good luck 🍀

The only thing I found that worked was NitNot - left on for two hours though with absolutely saturated hair before combing out, then again a week later.

notmorezoom · 14/01/2024 20:57

I use Hedrin mousse plus combing with a nitty gritty comb, every other night x4 i.e. over 8 days. once and then repeat a week later doesn't work. Leave on for 12 - 24 hours

Luddite26 · 14/01/2024 20:59

I used to use a blast of Aldi hairspray as a prevention with dd3 when it was a constant in her class and shaved Ds's hair off to keep them at bay. DD1 never had them ever. I'm sure they only like certain people like mosquitoes.

ballsdeep · 14/01/2024 21:03

Nitwits and a nitty gritty for me

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/01/2024 21:04

The only thing that cured nits in my daughter was leaving primary school. It was nearly a full time job dealing with them. Absolutely horrendous little buggers and so difficult to deal with because of her long, thick hair. I really feel for you. In the end I just nit combed with conditioner every single day.

wellhellohowstheweather · 14/01/2024 21:07

Lyclear - that smothering stuff has never worked for me

Hate to break it to you but we've just had them - kids both in secondary............

KitchenSinkLlama · 14/01/2024 21:13

When my son was small ( now an adult with a mortgage etc etc) he got nits once. I used a very fine toothed comb that zapped them with a very small electric charge via a battery. I'm not sure if you can still buy them but I preferred this option rather than chemicals.

KnittedCardi · 14/01/2024 21:16

Combing worked for us, but my dd's had fine hair, although lots of it. Only had them once, and then put a few drops of tea tree oil in conditioner from then on. Never got them again. Could be luck, but who knows......

Onehappymam · 14/01/2024 21:17

Which Hedrin did you buy?

Hedrin Once always works for us first time; it’s one of the few products that kills live lice and eggs too.

idontlikealdi · 14/01/2024 21:18

Conditioner and combing. Once the fuckers are gone do it once a week as a precaution.

shockeditellyou · 14/01/2024 21:21

Nitty gritty comb and combing every 3 days for a month, and treating with hair straighteners to fry the buggers.

Hair absolutely NEVER left down at school.

Saschka · 14/01/2024 21:23

Hedrin Once. But use it twice, a week apart, to ensure you’ve killed everything. And leave it on longer than 15 mins, I’d aim for a couple of hours.

If you are still finding live adults on all of you immediately after 3 proper applications of Hedrin over the space of a week, I’d worry you are re-infecting yourselves. Or have something other than nits. They do often come back, especially if you didn’t get all the eggs, but you shouldn’t still be finding live adults immediately after using it.

Are you smothering your scalp and hair in it? I have thick shoulder length hair and used the whole bottle just on myself, your hair needs to be absolutely dripping in it.

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/01/2024 22:08

@notmorezoom My daughter has left home now but she seemed to swerve them in secondary. I've got a 12 yo in year 8 and nothing so far but I'm not complacent! I remember my own secondary school having a terrible problem with them but I never caught them. Fingers crossed son is the same!!

TannedFrombirth · 14/01/2024 22:29

My kids have had and got them and I'm at my wits end I used hedrin twice in a row on my eldest two last week, and I think my 9 month old has them too as she was scratching her head poor thing and I could see what looked like eggs, partner had them too and I think I had them even tho my hair is dreadlocked so they wouldn't like my hair. I've bought a lice zapper so let's see how that goes!
