"I don't like my potty" from ds 2.11. What to do?

TuttiFrutti · 14/03/2008 17:50

Ds is 2 years 11 months. He is still in nappies, although he agrees reluctantly to sit on his potty before his bath every night - but only then! If I suggest it at any other time of day, he gets cross and shouts "I don't like my potty!"

I'm not sure if he knows what the potty is for, or whether he has much control. Sometimes something happens on the potty, but more often it doesn't. I do what the books say and give him lots of praise if we get a wee in the potty, but it doesn't seem to have much effect.

What should I do? Is there anything I can do, or is just a question of waiting till he is ready? About when he starts his GCSEs perhaps??!

Try a seat for the loo?

loler · 14/03/2008 17:59

decorate it with stickers of his choice and don't force it too much. my ds1 (2.11 - 29 april when's yours?) is currently sat on his in front of dora - when he goes will get a sticker of his choice, is refusing to move!

dd was 2.2 when dry day and night so I'm finding it quite hard not to be pushy. but there aren't any kids in reception wearing nappies so it must come eventually!

sorry for rubbishing 1 handed typing!

Bribe him?

Ditto loo seat. My DD1 went off her potty and I got a loo seat decorated with fish. She adored it.

MrsMattie · 14/03/2008 18:03

Try the toilet? And don't stress about it. Boys are often slow to toilet train.

frumpygrumpy · 14/03/2008 18:03

Remember, one cadburys chocolate finger per visit makes the wee/poo go down.

Wean him off later.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 14/03/2008 18:05

I second nab's suggestion.

Both of my boys bypassed the potty and went straight to the toilet with an insert like this

Or alternatively, take off the pressure, wait til the summer and try again?

The boys were over 3 when we took them out of nappies each time

HTH

i was in a very similar boat until yesterday when ds suddenly announced that he wanted to wear his fireman sam pants (bought for him for when he wanted to use the potty and decided that he wanted to be a big boy!). i did a potty brief and low and behold he stopped playing and took himself off to the potty and did a wee (i was sooo proud!). so I now know that he can do it, he just wasn't interested before. he's 2y7m.

does he have some pants that he's chosen himself? maybe you could go on a special shopping trip for some. it certainly helped us get ds interested in wanting to use the potty.

snowleopard · 14/03/2008 18:34

Hi FG... I like yours! (also in same boat with DS)

We have the toilet insert, and he'll happily wee on it but hasn't made the step of correspondingly not weeing (or pooing) in the pull-up.

frumpygrumpy · 14/03/2008 20:05

why thank you SL, how are you my dear?

loler · 14/03/2008 20:56

My ds1 has his own pants but prefers to wear his sisters pink (with hearts) knickers over the top of his nappy! Hoping this also will change before he goes to school!

snowleopard · 15/03/2008 00:53

Oops sorry FG missed you earlier! (had people round) OK thanks but bring on the blardy spring. Fed up with coughs and bugs and being freezing. Do you think there is going to be a summer up here this year?

How about you? I'm braving my first friend-from-nursery party soon... I wondered for a sec if it might be yours but probably not as it's a birthday boy (and I think you have a DD there?)

Sorry for hijack!

Arse look at the time...

choosyfloosy · 15/03/2008 00:56

wait til spring.

you could grow herbs in it in the meantime.

frumpygrumpy · 15/03/2008 10:43

Snowy, I lied to you . I was trying to keep anonymous. I have b/g DTs (easy to spot me now!). I am the loony at nursery who has a million three children running in circles around her and all crying talking at the same time while I slowly suffocate inside I still don't want to meet up though All meant in the best possible way!

dylsmum1998 · 15/03/2008 13:25

try the toilet, my ds would never use a potty- he absolutely hated it, straight to the toilet with him

lucy5 · 15/03/2008 13:30

I put dd straight on the loo, didn't bother with little seat.

TuttiFrutti · 15/03/2008 17:14

Thanks for all the tips. I have tried suggesting the toilet, but it gets the same reaction! Will try stickers though - where can you get them from?

Choosyfloosy, love the suggestion about growing herbs in potty while I wait!

FG don't worry! I feel the same, but the situation (with parties etc.) means one day we're probably going to have an awkward chat and not really be sure if we have actually had that MN encounter.... though I don't know why I'm worrying about that, as it's still possible to stay as we are.

You might think you're easy to spot, but I'm crap at noticing/remembering other parents (I'm too busy bustling away before I can put my foot in it one way or another) and tbh that sounds like several of them to me. Apart from a couple of people who I know from elsewhere anyway, the only parent I have actually clocked is our local celeb. (and if you're his DW I don't need to know that! )

frumpygrumpy · 16/03/2008 15:31

We have a local celeb

frumpygrumpy · 16/03/2008 15:34

How about at any nursery party I go to I weat a giant pink welly on my head? That way you can be sure I'm the one to avoid and no-one else will know the code

frumpygrumpy · 16/03/2008 15:35

wear even

snowleopard · 17/03/2008 10:22

Yes! (to the celeb not the welly) Didn't you know? Haven't you shamelessly rubbernecked him?

He is a comedian and sitcom star. Though admittedly he's a bit of a cult interest - some of my friends completely wee themselves with excitement when I tell them, others say "who?"

I haven't seen him recently though so it could be that his DC has moved on to school. I do still spot him in starbucks and tesco up the road though. As I'm freelance I sometimes go to the starbucks to work, and he does the same. (Me and , we're like that...)

snowleopard · 17/03/2008 10:22

oops hijack everywhere again. Sorry OP!

DforDiva · 17/03/2008 10:31

tolet seat worked for us, dd refused to use potty. i think some found it uncomfy
dd was 2yr8m.

ajh28 · 17/03/2008 11:50

My ds is 2yr 5m and hates his potty. ds#1 was dry before he was 2 so i'm finding it difficult. I've tried the loo seat, got 5 different potties, tried stickers, choc etc, etc. He has just started wanting to wear his pants but is still using them like a nappy!!!

Choc and stickers did work for ds#1, i think we just need to wait until they are ready ( even though it feels like they never will be) and then the treats will work.
