Protecting baby’s skin from cold - VERY sensitive skin

Hello

Has anyone got anything they’d recommend to protect their baby’s face in the cold - a rich cream or such - which works for very very sensitive skin?

Child’s Farm and Bramley Little B both brought him out in redness and extreme dryness.

Aveeno is our go-to. Miraculous stuff

YellowHatt · 02/12/2023 19:34

Are you breast feeding? Breast milk after you get back indoors maybe? Never heard it used for the cold but it’s supposed to be good for their skin.

Bootoagoose123 · 02/12/2023 19:37

We used weleda skin protection balm on sensitive eczema prone skin- it always seemed to work without drying them out

Face the day stick! Brilliant stuff, I still use it on my 5 & 1 year olds when their cheeks go red in the winter.

Wow such fast recommendations!

Those who have made recommendations - do your kids have sensitive skin and have they reacted to the brands I’ve mentioned? Realise that’s probably a long shot. I may just need to buy stuff and see what works but that’s expensive for me and uncomfortable for him…

@Mummymummy89 which specifically do you use?

thanks so much everyone!

palmer's cocoa butter stuff in the tub.
it's basically vaseline with a little cocoa butter.
or just vaseline.
or the dark weleda skin food.

you need something fat based as anything water based will not protect from cold.

greenacrylicpaint · 02/12/2023 19:48

many 'natural' brands contain allergens like chamomile, lanolin, calendula, limonene... check the label.

We use the ordinary Aveeno baby Daily Care and the baby Soothing Emollient which is thicker. They also have a lavender scented version of the baby Daily Care which is ok but I prefer the ordinary one.

It's really miraculous stuff, when my dd's skin is actually chapped and damaged, we put it on and then within about 12h it's miraculously healed. (Although my dh says that's just what baby's and young kids' skin is like, it heals quickly.) But it works preventatively in cold weather too, especially the thicker one.

Mummymummy89 · 02/12/2023 20:30

Ps yes dd has sensitive skin, for example we could only use plain water on flannels to clean her bum otherwise she got instant nappy rash

Lammveg · 02/12/2023 20:31

Moisturise then apply vaseline on top to seal it in

AngryBirdsNoMore · 02/12/2023 20:32

@Mummymummy89 I’ve had Aveeno recommended before as a brand so I will give that a go I think…

@greenacrylicpaintpalmers is what I use myself but it caused a reaction on DS as well.

Neutrogena hand cream. It says for hands but we all use it on our faces and have very sensitive skin. It's really good.

Breast milk worked wonders for both my babies’ skin but unfortunately I had to stop very early with both. DS2 with the very sensitive skin is 4.5 months now and sadly I have none on top or in the freezer!

Ps I’m not dismissing anyone’s recommendations - it’s all very helpful! Unfortunately he’s just unusually sensitive, more so than me or his older brother.

Aquaphor. It’s like a better vaseline, Americans use it for everything from lip balm to nappy rash but it’s especially good for cold weather/wind burn. DS2 has very sensitive skin and is fine with it, I’ve never heard of anyone not getting on with it actually. I think in the UK Superdrug sell it but it’s usually cheaper on amazon.

Superscientist · 02/12/2023 20:38

Hydromol it's like a thicker vaseline and the best thing the dry skin that needs protecting from moisture.
My daughter struggles with various rashes and dried skin and this is put go to for any skin that needs protecting. Her cheeks are red raw when she has a cold. Applied before bed with sore skin and her skin is nearly perfect the next morning. She fights having it applied so its a daily battle to get on top of it over night. We got out tub off the HV when she was a few weeks old and we are almost finished with it at 3 years on. It goes along way.

Caused a flare up on DS1’s cheeks but as I have some and use it myself I’ll maybe give it a go, thank you!

My youngest has very sensitive skin and used to get the reddest chapped skin in the cold. I used KoKo stick on her, or plain Vaseline. I also used a bonnet as it offered a bit of side protection vs a hat.

AngryBirdsNoMore · 02/12/2023 20:42

I’ve bought a little bottle of this @Mummymummy89 - will give this a go in the first instance :)

I like the oil/baby balm from neals yard. Lovely and gentle and stops the dryness

Have you tried pure Lanolin?

AngryBirdsNoMore · 17/12/2023 23:01

An update: he reacts to absolutely everything. Even E45 led to flaking off skin.

Im afraid he’s just going to have to get used to getting dry skin due to cold instead, and I’ll bundle him up as much as I can. And hope he grows out of it like his brother and I did!

Try hydromol it's for eczema psoriasis and dry skin condition. It has no fragrance colouring additives or preservatives. It is probably the gentlest thing you can find
