we had fallen into that habit of dvd and tv all the time, mainly becuase we had a series of illnesses and the sofa was a deathbed for about 3 weeks and Ceebies was on rotation

so I put my foot firmly down

we have banned tv after school

and in the morning

and.......

behaviour has improved massively
toys are played with
games are created

all in all, miles better

they can watch Little Bear [soul destroyingly crap] for 30 mins and then go to bed

anyone else banned tv for a while? (and I don't mean you weirdos () that do not have one at all)

I find my dd1 is far better behaved if we don't have the TV on after school. Loud TV espeically really seems to irritate her.

we never have tv on in morning

We have a rather anal routine, as dh doesn't like telly, we have 2 living rooms and only light the fire in one of the rooms at a time.

So, 3 nights a week we're in the front room so watch tv, but only recorded stuff like films or series we like.

4 nights a week we're in the front room and read, listen to music or

Interesting Professor Olive. Might give it a try.

However, I like Little bear. It is nice and serene, much better than Power Rangers.

Oliveoil · 13/03/2008 11:45

I would never ban the tv completely, my dad did that when we were young and I still moan at him now about it

very excluded at school etc

but banning it after school is great, they do not fight and/or sit on the sofa gawping at the tv

didn't ban it - but when we were staying with my DB for half term there was no TV......I was glad to get home

DrNortherner · 13/03/2008 11:49

I wouldn't have had to buy a farking golden coin maker if I'd banned adverts.

bozza · 13/03/2008 11:54

We have never ever had the TV on a school morning. And we are up to nearly 3 years of them. The DC watch very little during the week. DD sometimes watches some stuff on a Monday night while she is waiting for DS to get back from Beavers. DS is not allowed on his DS on school days - apart from Friday nights. And only on the PS2 if he has a friend around and then only on a 2-player game and not allowed to insist that his poor visitor plays pro-evolution soccer on it all the time.

bundle · 13/03/2008 11:55

Charlton (1998; see PIP p.574) carried out a study in St Helena, which found that the introduction of TV had no adverse effects on children.

bozza · 13/03/2008 11:56

DS managed to pick golden coinmaker out of Argos catalogue all on his own without the aid of adverts so don't be too sure northerner...

RubberDuck · 13/03/2008 11:57

We had a screen free day the other day where all screens were banned (including our computers - now that was hard ) and it was actually a lot of fun. Not too unusual as we often go camping in the summer and leave all screens behind, but then we had alternative activities to distract us. Again, our impetus was after overdosing on TV due to illness and it did us good.

ruddynorah · 13/03/2008 11:58

dd loves tv, i love it. we have it on A LOT.

HuwEdwards · 13/03/2008 11:59

my kids self-regulate. This morning, no tv, drew pictures instead.

After school, again sometmes they do, sometimes not.
