Baby Boy Wetting Through Nappies at Night (Side Sleeper)

Hi! I’m new here and was wondering if anyone has advice on bed wetting.

My baby boy is 4 months old and has recently become a side sleeper, wetting through his nappy up to 3 times a night.

I’ve read through other threads and forums and have gotten advice from my health visitor but we still aren’t able to solve the problem.

So far we have:

  • Gone up a nappy size
  • Have tried Pampers Premium Protection nappies
  • Have tried Pampers Baby-Dry Night pants
  • Made sure his private bits are pointing downwards
  • Made sure the nappy is fastened tightly and the frilly bits are facing outwards

Despite all of this we are still having the same problem and are our little boy is waking up more in the night due to being uncomfortable with the issue. It’s a struggle having to change the bed sheets and his clothing 2-3 times per night too! I’m assuming it’s not an absorbency issue as we don’t have this problem in the daytime only on the left (on the hip or left side of his back) side every night as this is the side he sleeps on.

Does anybody have any additional advice for us? It would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Is his vest the right size? If they are too tight they can cause the nappy to not fit correctly.

drspouse · 10/11/2023 07:42

We used washable nappies but when we were away from home a disposable plus a nappy wrap (cover) worked well for leaks.

MichelleeG · 10/11/2023 07:50

We dress him in vests that are bigger than his usual size.

But now you’ve mentioned it, I’m wondering if his baby grows could be the issue. They fit quite snug as he is a chunky baby so I’m wondering whether a bigger baby grow in the night time could help?

I suppose it’s worth a try! Thanks for the advice 🙃

How much/at all does he feed at night? Nappies that are advertised as going all night are working on the assumption that baby isn’t drinking anything for 12 hours. He’s still teeny and there’s not anything wrong with night feeds at 4 months but if he’s having a lot then one nappy isn’t going to be able to absorb that volume of pee.

Also, have you tried… Smaller nappies- don’t exceed the weight guide on the packet or else they’ll gape and let pee escape; bigger vest / no vest so that the nappy isn’t compressed as it tries to expand.

X posted - bigger babygrows are a good thing to try too! I struggled with getting a good fit for DS too and we used to put him to bed in a long sleeved vest and footed leggings, then his sleeping bag.

We’ve never used nappy wraps before, I’m sure it’s a worth a try. Thanks!

Do you recommend a specific brand?

We used reusable nappies and these wraps are amazing...

He usually has a feed before bed and then one or two feeds during the night. We always try to put him to bed with a clean nappy too.

The problem started when we were on size 3’s so we moved him up to 4 hoping that would solve the issue.

Mine are 9 and 11 now so I'm sure it's all changed!
But try a second hand group on FB to buy a few styles to try.

I think I’m definitely going to give this a go as his clothes do fit snug with him being chunky. Fingers crossed it helps.

Bigger feeds now he’s getting older meaning more pee and you’ve just reached the capacity of what the 3s can hold but he’s too small for the 4s so they’re also leaking but because they’re gaping would be my guess. He’s almost certainly too small for the 4s as they’re from 9kg which is about the size of an average 9MO. Expecting one nappy to hold 3 feeds might be unrealistic. I would try going back to size 3s, def do the bigger babygrows too but you’ll probably need to change him at at least one of his wakes.

chocomoccalocca · 10/11/2023 08:25

I would also try different makes, my two fitted into different nappies differently so what worked for one causes leaks in the other

Recoba · 10/11/2023 08:46

I've had this problem a couple of times, with both children - it's really annoying! Have you checked that the vest isn't too tight around the poppers and pressing in? If not, try going up a vest size or getting some vest popper extenders.

Looks like I’ve got a combination of things to try through the week. Hopefully we get a solution!

Yeah I can imagine. Our baby has proper chunky legs so buying clothes can be a bit tricky!

I’ll shop around for sure, thanks.

Will definitely look into this as our baby is quite chunky and his clothes can fit tight, thanks!

Yep definitely worth a try.

Also sometimes it just happens. Both my kids went through stages around that sort of age where they leaked through, didn't matter what I did. It is annoying!

MichelleeG · 14/11/2023 08:21

Update

We dressed our baby boy in larger vests and baby grows and for the past 3 nights we have had no leaks. He’s been sleeping through the night as he no longer was disrupted by the leaking through which we were so pleased about!

But unfortunately by night 4 the problem has continued and I am honestly baffled by it. We are now back to him wetting through the night 3 times a night.

I will go back through the thread and see if there’s anything else we can do. Again, a big thank you for all of your suggestions and if anybody else has anything different to add or something that has worked for them please do let me know!

Try a different brand of nappies.

drspouse · 14/11/2023 11:03

Have you tried wraps yet?

everywherebear · 14/11/2023 11:15

We had a similar issue with one of our babies, we tried the following:
Bigger nappies
2 nappies at a time (one the right way around, one backwards)
Different brand (I think we must have worked through EVERY brand that exists!!)
Nappy wraps
Cotton wool inside the nappy for extra absorbency

In the end, the only thing that worked was Aldi nappies in a larger size with a nappy wrap over the top, but you may have to try a combination of all these to find what works for you! Good luck, and take heart - it does stop eventually 😂

Try a different brand of nappies.

That’s the next step for us I think as we've always used Pampers.

We will definitely look into it alongside a different brand of nappies I think.
