Nipped my 6mos old with nail clippers :(

Our DD is 6 months. She is adopted and has been with us for a month.

I usually clip her nails when other half is giving her an evening bottle, but thought I’d chance it tonight while she was sat in her little chair.

She was a bit agitated with it, so I know I shouldn’t have bothered continuing. But then I nipped her on the second nail and she started bleeding. I feel awful. Lots of tears from her.

Sorted it with a cold bit of cotton wool and then lots of cuddles and kisses before bed…but I’m sort of worried now that she’ll hate me forever (irrational, I know!).

Please tell me this is easily done and I’m not just awful 😂

Also, if there is an easier way to do her nails, please let me know. I’m forever going to be terrified of those nail clippers now!!!

It's easily done. She'll have forgotten by the morning.

Parakeetamol · 23/10/2023 19:56

We've all been there. I ended up biting dd's nails after a similar incident when I became too scared to clip them

She definitely won’t hate you forever, she won’t even remember. I did it with at least 2 of my 4 children and they certainly don’t remember. I’ve never used the nail clippers, always the baby nail scissors.

fishfingersandtoes · 23/10/2023 19:57

It's easily done. I used to clip my son's nails when he was asleep (deep sleeper)

Cairnmum · 23/10/2023 19:58

Aww, it's easily done and she won't remember anything by tomorrow. I done this with my LO when he was about 4 months. I cried for longer than he did! I bought an electric nail file for babies from amazon to do them with until I'm more confident to cut them

addictedtotheflats · 23/10/2023 19:59

I did this felt awful, used a nail file after that it worked really well

DrinkingAllTheGin · 23/10/2023 20:01

Another vote for an electric file. I bought this one

Quiet enough to use while DD sleeps.

Apossum · 23/10/2023 20:03

I did the same to my boy, I’m ashamed to say more than once! I only used nail scissors from the second time 😳 it’s so easily done with those bloody clippers.

fourelementary · 23/10/2023 20:04

Bite them. She won’t remember.

trigger warning. Graphic…

My friend worked for nhs24 and once had a call where the caller had shipped the end of their baby’s finger OFF!

Emmylou22 · 23/10/2023 20:06

I lopped off a chunk of my daughter's thumb when she was a baby. Trying to cut her nails. She was fine. It grew back fairly quickly!

fancyfrogs · 23/10/2023 20:10

Oh I promise she won't remember and I'm sure she will be fine. It's hard, they're wriggly little things! I cut when they're fast asleep with normal nail scissors. When he was smaller, I used one of the electric nail files which was much easier.

WotNoUserName · 23/10/2023 20:11

I did this to my son when he was a baby. He's 21 now and hasn't mentioned it, so quite sure he doesn't hate me for it. Grin

My solution was to get my husband to do his nails (and his brothers) until they were old enough to do their own.

niclw · 23/10/2023 20:11

I did the same when my dc was a bit older (about 2 years). Their thumb didn't stop bleeding. We were on a call to 111 about the amount of blood but they wouldn't refer us to A&E as DC was isolating due to covid contact despite no symptoms. He was nervous of me cutting his nails after that but nothing that a tv distraction couldn't solve.

newtovanlife · 23/10/2023 20:12

I caught my LOs toe - took a full 36 hours before the plaster could come off and not bleed everywhere. It was deep but didn't scar. Think we've all been there. If the appendage is still attached then you're doing well mamma!

Blessedbethefruitz · 23/10/2023 20:13

I didn't learn after doing this with 1st baby. Second baby i managed to leave a tiny splinter of nail (while trying not to snip her skin following a similar incident the weeke before) causing a huge infection requiring antibiotics. At no point did it occur to me to query the use of penicillin for my breastfed second child, with my anaphylaxis. Shit happens (literally when those kind of allergies are involved...)

DaftyInTheMiddle · 23/10/2023 20:14

Don’t bite them 🤮 that’s rank and really unhygenic.

As PPs have said, it’s just one of those things. That being said, I much prefer cutting my daughters nails to the guinea pigs 😂

Pradder · 23/10/2023 20:15

I did this! Snipped a little circle off her fingertip when she was very little bless her, she was fine in a moment.

Clipping them while she was asleep or feeding worked ok for us.

I felt dreadful when I did it, and was so upset at myself.

NotReadyForAutumnYet · 23/10/2023 20:19

I think most parents have felt the fear with nail clippers and many of us have accidentally nipped more than we intended. I ended up buying a baby nail file thing, but gave up as it took so long to file, I felt like the nail I'd just done would grow back by the time I finished the next one!

Firsttimer1125 · 23/10/2023 20:28

Definitely an electric nail file. My boy is 9 months and it’s still a struggle but shouldn’t cut him. I did it with clippers when younger by mistake too.

I bought the hakaa one off Amazon with different heads. Very easy to use

Spudlover · 23/10/2023 20:31

I did this too, I clipped my newborn. He was fine and I was far more bothered than he was. I also did it while he was asleep after that, it was the wriggling that caused a problem in the first place!

Torganer · 23/10/2023 20:48

I don’t know any parent that hasn’t done this!! I think it’s a rite of passage 😂

wfcats · 23/10/2023 20:50

We did this twice! Second PP's suggestion of an electric nail file, we have the hakaa one and it's good

NickD87 · 23/10/2023 20:53

Oh thank god, and for all the reassuring comments. I‘ve felt awful all evening but feel better knowing it’s something lots of people do!!
