Going from 2 - 3 children, Yes or No

I'm a regular mn who knows too many people in real life to post under my real mumsnet name and want this to remain a secret if i do decided to go for number 3.

but i'm seriously thinking about having a 3rd baby, but lots puts me off, like money, needing new car, bigger house, work, nursery.

have just got on a nice even keel now dc2 is nearly 3 but the cluckiness is still there

so tell me why 3 is the magic number.

3 isn't the magic number......

5 is

altho my 3rd was the easiest to slot into the family, as I had done it all before, as had DH, and the girls had each other and so they had got over the whole 'share mummy' thing and jealousy wasn;t even a fear!!!

alfiesbabe · 07/03/2008 21:53

2 is a little bit..... ordinary. 4 means forking out on a people carrier/dreaded 4x4.... 3 is the magic number! You can manage with a 3 bedroom house if you cant afford anything bigger (most 3 bed houses have two double bedrooms, so you can stick two of the same gender in together). I have a theory that the move from 2 to 3 is probably the most significant because the kids outnumber the parents.

ab - never thought of the children outnumbering the parents angle

Do it, do it, do it!

3 is the magic number

As for the reasons against ...they won't exist when you have gorgeous dc3 in your arms

Agree I thought 2 a bit too "neat".

But it still took us 6.5 years (and a small accident) to get from 2 to 3, and 19 months later it is fab. I was worried about how we would all adapt to having a baby in the house again, but the DDs adore their little brother, and he has changed the family dynamics in the best possible way.

I had my 3rd as I didn't want to be 'neat'. But 3 certainly is waaaaay more messy!!

FAQ · 07/03/2008 22:19

3 is great - we have a little ford fiesta and it's doable with a 7,4 and 9 month old

dizzydixies · 07/03/2008 22:19

am also lurking with interest, although maybe a tad late as dc3 due in july

I actually always wanted 4 but will just take it one dc at a time!

BigBadMouse · 07/03/2008 22:20

We are having DC3 in May who will be our DS1. I'm really looking forward to having three tbh but not sure why when two seems more than enough right now .

Just wanted to say that my Midwife has three girls and she said three is fab - one of the good things (her girls are around young teen age now) is that when one has a party, sleepover etc she doesn't feel as if the other is left out as they have their other sister for company. Also she said they seem to enjoy being a threesome because bizarrely, they get more space to themselves - one can always disappear off to their room while the other two are fighting or chatting and get some time to themselves.

sorkycake · 07/03/2008 22:20

I think 3 is lopsided, go for four and even it up

CarGirl · 07/03/2008 22:21

the only downside of three is that a 4th rounds it up nicely

Psychomum5 · 07/03/2008 22:25

3 is lovely.

3 is fittable in a normal size car

3 is fittable in a 3 bed house

3 is fab as you finally know what to expect, and makes you feel more 'complete' (well, for most anyway).

HOWEVER

3 means often 2 against 1

3 normally means 2 sharing, 1 alone/feeling superior for having their own room.

3 means always one arguing about why they should sit in the middle.....()

3 means 2 sit with mummy at the pictures, 1 with daddy, or vice versa

3 could mean 2 girls on mummys side and 1 boys on daddys, or again, vice versa......

SO

go for four

or be psycho insane sensible, and go for 5.....

CarGirl · 07/03/2008 22:32

4/5 always seem to entertain each other

more to look after you in your old age

more presents to receive on your birthdays

they individually need fewer toys/less crap because they are too busy playing to need it

Joolyjoolyjoo · 07/03/2008 22:53

I've just had my 3rd and am loving it!! He has fitted right in and the girls adore him. My wee family feels complete (although I always said I wanted 4!) and I am so much more relaxed this time round that I am enjoying his babyhood immensely. I was worried about going back to sleepless nights etc, but he has fitted in like a wee dream!

Go for it!

jennster · 07/03/2008 23:00

Hmm I'm thinking about a third. As I see it, I want a third to get it right this time round.

tinytotmummy · 07/03/2008 23:01

pscyhomum, just read dh your post - I thought it was great - he was not impressed.

my no3 is 5m and she's fitting in just fine. Tis a little less organised and a little more chaotic, but I like there being a lot of us.

Psychomum5 · 07/03/2008 23:02

cargirl.....LOL

more pressies indeed......

how material!!!!!

I am not like that at all, oh no, not in any way in need of at least one pressie per child

Psychomum5 · 07/03/2008 23:03

tinytot........

DH's never get it!

dropscone · 07/03/2008 23:05

2 parents, 2 children , 2 nuclear, 2 perfect ! Alfiesbabe is right - kids outnumbering parents is significant. our family dynamic changed in a good way with the arrival of no 3 - go for it !!!!!!

VictorianSqualor · 07/03/2008 23:14

I'm pg with my third now.
You can fit three into a normal car, and pretty much everything else seems to be falling into place with us, money isnt too much of an issue, and DC can share a room with one of the other two until we can afford a new house.

My DC2 has recently turned three as well, I think that;s definitely a time you start to think about it again, just as it all becomes easy
