I have nothing to advise really I have a 3.7yo DD1 who is still in pull-ups at night I haven't been brave enough to stop her wearing them. Her pull-up is wet in the morning BUT I think it is laziness in part, if she has a pull-up on she will pee in it instead of go to the toilet. For example this morning her pull up had fresh pee in it before I took it off.

I don't know whether to try her just now or wait a few months until she is 4?

no advice but watching closely.
DD1 was 4 last week. her nappy (Easy Up) in the morning is wet - but i know she often wees when i put it on (she stands there, still, silent, i know she is doing it and she laughs when i tell her off)

and i bet she is wee-ing away in the morning.

i want to go cold turkey on it, but she often moves into the spare room (big double bed) she has taken a fancy to. Also DD2 still wakes up in the night so really can't handle more than this wake up atm.

amidaiwish · 06/03/2008 15:58

biglips - does she still have milk/a drink before bed?

sweetkitty · 06/03/2008 17:23

I feel the same about DD1 amidaiwish - I think she is peeing in her pull-up after I put it on at night as she has it on then has a story and "reads" to herself for about 10 minutes before sleeping I think she is peeing in it then and then in the morning. I am about to begin potty training DD2 and am pregnant so this is one thing I can do without, I am going to try her at 4 though.

biglips · 06/03/2008 19:03

yes she have her milk and juice in her bed before she falls asleep. Ive always had done it.

You can't train kids to be dry at night imo and ime

HV told me no brown drinks after 4pm (coke, apple juice etc Have tried lifting b4 I go to bed as well....

my DS is 5 (6 in couple of months)
up until tonight, I have resigned myself to bedtime pants as thought he wasnt ready

TWICE this week I have checked him while saying goodnight & they were wet!!!
Said he was bursting for the loo while I was reading the story

so I have bitten the bullet, bought those pamper mats & got change of bedding ready for when I go to bed & check him. I will defend him if he genuinely isnt ready but surely twice in a week b4 even asleep shows he's being lazy

will let you know after a weekend of washing lots of sheets!!!

Tommy · 06/03/2008 19:36

when I tried with DS2, in a week he had 4 dry and 3 wet. We went back to pull ups and a few weeks later, tried again.

Not had a wet bed since (nearly a year)

DS1 is still not there (6.1 and pull up still soaked every morning)

Bluestocking · 06/03/2008 19:38

I'm pretty sure NAB is right. Children aren't physically capable of being dry at night until their bodies start to make a hormone which slows down urine production during the night. This is a normal part of maturation and like any other maturation process, it happens at different times for different children. But hey, if you want to wash widdly sheets for months, then who am I to try and dissuade you?

biglips · 06/03/2008 19:38

well ill give one more night and if she is wet tmrw...then ill put the nappy back on till she is proper ready

OP posts:
amidaiwish · 06/03/2008 21:31

i totally agree that night time dryness can't be "trained" and that it is a hormone that kicks in to stop the body producing urine at night.

however, i do not actually think DD1 is weeing when she's asleep. I think she's doing it long before she goes to sleep and when she wakes up. The thing is, how to know for definite?

Often she will poo in her nappy too then call me to change it. When i tell her off for not using the toilet, i get the response "i was busy" or "i was reading my book"

glowwormish · 07/03/2008 06:32

amidawish, you have mad me laugh! Your DD sounds like a right little tinker!
Do pull ups make any difference to anyone's los? My nearly 4yo is in normal nappies. I like the idea of this hormone and waiting for this to kick in. I thought I was being lazy but I feel quite refreshed after reading this post. My DD has a full nappy in the morning so I think she is weeing in the night.

Nemoandthefishes · 07/03/2008 06:49

I dont agree with the no drinks thing I just think when they are ready they are ready. I would possibly try her for a week then if still wetting give up. Both ds and dd1 were ready to be completely out of nappies really early but I was lucky.

bossybritches · 07/03/2008 07:00

Yes you're right about the hormone thing. We all hahve an "anti-diuretic hormone" that kicks in at varying times to slow the constant production of wee during the night, until that kicks in you are onto a loser.

Lifting won't help either, it just encourages them go in their sleep!

Not a good idea to stop drinks too early in the evening IMO but there is a theory that milk contains some enzyme that triggers bladder reaction in some kids.

Might be worth stopping drinks in bed, have a last drink of just water see if that helps.

Leave the pull-ups/nappies on till your child is waking 4/5 nights a week with a dry one in the morning which shows they're ready.

Just a few ideas I've known to work!

amidaiwish · 07/03/2008 07:29

well, some progress i think.
after getting off here last night (and changing her easy-up as she stood there and did a massive wee the minute i put it on) i told her she was now 4 and at school in sept and did she want to be wearing nappies when she went to school?

i then told her if her nappy was dry in the morning she would get a sticker. 5 stickers she could go to the shop and choose a treat.

Well, at 5am i heard her use the toilet.

Her nappy was MUCH much drier this morning - not totally dry though. (but she did have hot chocolate right before bed and milk just after 5 when she couldn't go back to sleep).

My concern is to build it up into a big thing and she isn't physically ready... anyway, will keep going on this track. Watch this space!

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 07/03/2008 08:07

FWIW I tried all sorts with mine and we did have a run of dry nights but it is only now I can safely say he is dry at night. He still has the odd wet bed but not to the point of going back to nappies/pull ups. He is 6.

I have a sneaky suspicion my youngest son might be younger.

BoysOnToast · 07/03/2008 08:17

i have boys and boys are supposed to be later than girls (whatever that menas, i am sceptical of such generalisations)

i find nightime dryness comes on their own. ds1 made me let him stop wearing a nappy at night. v few accidents. and when he does slip up the bed is prepared and its no big deal.

ds2 has now started asking to go without a nappy... and has spent a night or two without wetting his nappy, so i shall concede to 'allow' him to try it soon. hes 4 in july.

the 'lazy' appraoch to night training seems to be pretty darned affective round here... i would recommend it

amidaiwish · 07/03/2008 08:38

boysontoast - that is what i was doing, the lazy approach - but DD1 is far too fond of her night time nappy it seems!!

am also doing the lazy approach to potty training with DD2 - it is working incredibly well!

BoysOnToast · 07/03/2008 18:37

amidaiwish - great when the easy way turns ou to be the best way too, isnt it?

ds3, turned 2 end of jan, hardly ever wears a nappy now in the day, is pretty independent about it all too. yesterday he took himself to the loo, pood in the potty, wiped himself clean, put the poo in the toilet and went about his day! [bloody genius, must get it from me ]

Unfitmother · 07/03/2008 18:44

I've been using Pampers Bed Mats under the sheet for years now.
DS is 10 and is wet every night. He takes a synthetic form of the hormone discussed earlier which helps him get through to between 5 - 6am when he wets.
Stopped night time pants about 4 years ago but no joy yet Have been to enurisis clinic which wasn't much use.
I'll try anything

amidaiwish · 07/03/2008 19:25

unfit mother - horrible name, i am sure you are anything but!

i'm sure he'll get there in his own time. i assume you've tried those alarms etc...
