2 year old DD something stuck up nose - to wait until Monday for appt

Does anyone have any experience of this? It's not sitting well with me... I thought my little one had a developed a cold at nursery on Thursday when I picked her up. But runny nose was quite brown, I wondered if they had scratched it when wiping it and that's why she seemed upset when I wiped it too. During Thursday and Friday night she has woken up and struggled a bit with blocked nose. Fast forward to this morning, she seemed a bit lethargic and still irritated if you tried to wipe nose and it has started to smell a little. I stupidly assumed it was a bad cold but I I looked right up earlier with a torch and can see the bottom of something dark stuck up her nose. My guess is a raisin but could be a little stone?! Called 111 and they have given us an ENT appointment on Monday. She is crying everytime she touches it by accident , irritable and it smells. Am I wrong to be worried about infection too? It's too far up to try get it ourselves and I tried the mother's kiss thing but she was fighting me off. Any thoughts?

A&E.
There's no way I'd wait till Monday.

readingmakesmehappy · 16/09/2023 22:12

Try the mother's kiss before you go to A&E. we did that when my 2yo inhaled a piece of sweet corn. Popped right out and he thought it was hilarious.

katem98 · 16/09/2023 22:18

I'm really shocked that 111 suggested a planned appointment on Monday. Definitely take to A&E.

19 years ago this happened to dd. I told the GP it wasn’t an emergency and was given an appointment 3 days later.

when I got there the gp was horrified, told me she should have been seen the same day & within 2 hours she’d been admitted to hospital to have it removed under anaesthetic.

another one saying A&E! my sister had to go for sticking a stone up her nose when she was a toddler.

LakeTiticaca · 16/09/2023 23:00

My little sister stuck an orange pip up her nose age about 2. Doc said bring her in. My mum set off with the pushchair in torrential rain and halfway there sister sneezed and the pip flew out 😁

DS stuck something up his nose last week! Slight difference here is that he's FIVE years old 🙄 Still, neither DC has ever done anything like it before.

We took him to the hospital (urgent care) and they did an xray and found it had gone down into his stomach. They couldn't see it in his nose so wanted to investigate, if it had been visible they would've tried to get it out first.

NHS says: If your child has something lodged firmly in their nose or ear, leave it where it is. You may push it further in if you try to remove it.
Take your child to the nearest A&E department or minor injuries unit.

This happened to my dc as a toddler with a raisin. We went to minor injuries and tried the mothers kiss which did nothing. Raisins tend to expand so it’s hard to get them out. They said go to A and E where we had a long wait for the ENT consultant to come from another hospital. Luckily DC was happy enough and not bothered by the raisin. Eventually when he came he said DC needed to have it removed in theatre but unfortunately we’d just eaten so it was a further wait on the ward for DC to go to theatre. Then it was the worlds fastest procedure in theatre and the raisin was removed. They said we had to get it out asap as although unlikely, if the raisin did travel, it could get serious. So definitely take your DC

HauntingSecrets · 16/09/2023 23:41

My friends DC had to have it removed under GA as the mother’s kiss didn’t work, that was without an infection I think.

fairymary87 · 16/09/2023 23:46

A&E sounds like infection

Morning all, thanks so much for the responses. It gave me a kick to be confident that a and e was the right thing to do! I slept with her last night as she was already asleep, she woke up lots with it being difficult to breathe through mouth. We got up early and in to a and e. Waiting to be seen by ENT at the moment, it's quite far up and still no idea what it is. We tried the mother's kiss with the nurse and no budging. Will update again later x

My dd did this when she was 5. Everyone's story is different. But in end, I picked a quiet hospital with onsite ENT service, went early in morning with packed lunches (,I knew it wld be a long day!), went through the system eventually seeing TWO ENT doctors who asked if I'd be OK with them fishing it out with forceps which meant pinning her down. Thought that was preferable to being knocked out. So me, nurse and doc pinned her whilst other doctors got bloody plastic bead out. Took a couple of mins. she was uncomfortable but coped well. And then we were off home. She never did it again! Got the bead. Still can't believe she managed to shove it up so far! Hope you get seen and sorted soon.

So glad you went OP, have they got whatever it was, out yet?

Floralnomad · 17/09/2023 14:35

Hope this is sorted now @RhubarbCrumble12345

RhubarbCrumble12345 · 17/09/2023 14:46

Hi everyone, good ending over here. We saw ENT consultant, they said we could wait for general anaesthetic etc but he would rather get it out there and then in case of risk she got it into airway during the night. We both held her down and they used a long hooked rod thing and managed to get it out. To our surprise, it wasn't a raisin but a very round baby acorn. Very bizarre! No wonder it was hurting it was rock hard! Bloody nose afterwards but back to normal and she is glad it's out anyway. Very glad I didn't wait until tomorrow, we barely slept a wink last night with worry. Thank you all x

Yes, please take her to A & E. She needs to be checked out.

Sugarfree23 · 17/09/2023 14:48

Glad you have got it out.

Floralnomad · 17/09/2023 14:48

Good result !

itsgettingweird · 17/09/2023 15:47

Yay glad it out.

Hopefully that'll put her off sticking anything else up there!

LuckOfTheDrawer · 17/09/2023 15:54

Great update 🙂.

HighFiveOoooooIFeelSoAlive · 17/09/2023 16:01

Yes, good update op

I've taken one of mine to minor injuries with a big ball of tissue up her nose. Was massive when it came out! So worth trying minor injuries if you have one and if it ever happens again (but hopefully not)!

My nephew once put a battery up his nose and he had to have surgery to get it out! Definitely something you want to get sorted quickly imo - glad it ended well for you 😊

MidnightOnceMore · 17/09/2023 16:48

Glad this is all resolved! Hopefully she will only do it once!

Freezingcoldinseptember · 17/09/2023 16:53

Ds got a tic tac stuck at 13!! Panicked until I told him to just blow his nose and it flew out!
Dd ate a screw at 4 years old. Had to check poo for days!

Jellykat · 17/09/2023 18:16

So glad its sorted OP!.. as the saying goes 'she'll only do it once' (hopefully!), was certainly the case with my DS1.
